    Red dawn russian helo

Hey don't start bashing good o'l Chuck Norris now... Some of you guys just don't seem to appreciate these 80's classics. How very un-American of you. Â The sheer cheesiness of these movies is what makes them so great. Â No worries about politics and deep messages about life that leaves you questioning your social structure. Â Just good old fashioned good guys vs. bad guys without any complications. Â It's a great relief from all the artsy-fartsy "cinematic masterpieces" that crowd the movie scene today. Of course I enjoy the newer ultra realistic movies that are comming out too with their cool special effects, compelling and well thought out plots... However, Â there is a time to be serious, and a time to sit back, grab a beer, and let the cheese flow.

    Red dawn russian helo

Red Dawn... Yes, those where the days. Evil red commie invaders against a brave group of young freedom loving Americans. Ahhh, if things could be that black & white again. You have to realize that even though the concept of a Soviet Invasion of the United States seems rediculous to us now, back in the early 80's people were seriously afraid that something like that could happen. I think it's a classic, but I can understand if some of you younger folks in here think it's the cheesiest thing you've ever seen.

    Would war be better?

This is an interesting topic - the philosophy of war. Â As long as this thread manages to stay on topic (war in general) and not turn into another endless mid-east thread, it would be a really interesting debate. Perhaps we like the idea of war so much because its the simplest way to solve a dispute. Â Logically, if you killl or whip everyone you have a problem with into submission, your problems will end... Didn't Stalin say something like that? Â The obvious fallacy in that line of thinking is the fact that war causes more new problems than it was originally trying to solve in the first place. Â So my opinion? Â War is never justfied and should only be practiced in self defense under strict ethical guidelines, or simulated in cool games such as OFP.

    Stupid question

Actually this question is not as stupid as it looks. I remember when I was playing the resistance campaign, it took me a while to figure out that I had to place the satchel charges by the support beams instead of just throwing a bunch of them ontop of the bridge. I thought it was a bug at first... Damn this realism

And I can assure you that there are still tons of remainders to be found in russia.<span id='postcolor'> Bones! Â That's pretty freaky. Â I figured human remains whould be decomposed by now. Â Then again, archeologists dig up bones thousand times older all the time. Â I guess they got preserved by all the mud. I used to hike a lot when I was stationed in Italy, especially around the Monte Cassino area where a lot of fighting took place. Â I would stumble across old overgrown bunkers all the time. Â The gun emlacements and turrets were mostly still in place except the weapons themselves of course. Â Lot's of scrap metal, old artillery shells, empty ammo boxes, pots, pans, and canteens, etc, nothing really valuable. Â It did leave a lasting impression on me though. Â Previously to my trips into the Italian countryside, WWII for me was kind of surreal, like an old black and white movie. Â It was really eerie to realize that it actually took place only 50 years earlier. Â It blew my mind.

U.s. deploys very special forces to iraq

I agree with FSPilot. This is kind of poor taste.

Army food around the world, guys lets share what u

Well...in the U.S. military there's the good old MRE (Meal Ready to Eat) for when you're out in the field. Â They contain about 2000-3000 calories of well balanced nutrition (3-4 pouches of various foods) and comes with a disposable heating pouch. Â The food generally tastes like shit, allthough it has improved over the years. Â Sometimes if you are lucky, you can find some real treats in your MRE such as a bag of M&M's or even "Skittles".

    Going to war with iraq?

I don't remember that they even offered a course in geography at my high school... The attitude that I find most common is that people find that memorizing maps is useless, like learning "Latin and Art". Â The same goes for history... and math... Oh yes, Â and science.... Â pretty much everything that you're supposed to learn in school. At least we have good higher education. Â The first two years of any college program is basically general education stuff that could easily be taught in high school. Â What a waste of time and money. Edited for grammar and spelling errors

    Die another day

I haven't seen the new one yet, but I look forward to it. I like Pierce Brosnan as Bond, he fits in well with the newer style bond plots...you know the more politically correct Bond: nice special effects and hot but smarter, stronger and more independent chicks. It's all good and entertaining. Nothing beats the old classics though, the Ian Flemming originals. That was the real James Bond.

Not to change the subject too much, but I was just wondering... Speaking of Thief, any news of Thief III? I heard a rumor that another developer had taken over where Looking Glass left off. Thief II left you kind of hanging there at the end.

    Bush and the environment

I agree, the mass transit system in the U.S. sucks. I don't see it ever improving much either. It's simply so much easier to jump in your car and drive everywhere you are going since gas is so cheap. I wish I could help out the environment more but it's impossibly impractical. I think we are slowly heading in the right direction though, even with a Republican government. Even the "Bushies" are realizing that too much pollution is not good for business. American auto makers are making small but significant proccess in building more fuel efficient cars. Communities are getting stricter with local industries in curbing pollution. We're getting there, it may take us a little longer than you Europeans, but we'll get there eventually; hopefully before it's too late.

Whats church like in the military?

In boot camp I used to love going to the church services. I consider myself an agnostic, but I still looked forward to Sunday. It meant that you got 3 hours of peace and relaxation. No drill instructors screaming at you, just a friendly chaplain reading some biblical verses for you followed by some singing. It was strictly forbidden to sleep, but if you did it properly, you could make it look like you were just deep in prayer. They would also occasionally invite some local church choir group to come in and perform for us which included women. It was the only evidence for us that the female sex still existed. If you chose not to attend religious services you had to stay in the barracks and mop floors until everyone else got back. Not surprisingly there where no atheists in my company. In the Navy we had Catholic mass, Protestant (non-denominal) Service and if you were Jewish, they had a Saturday evening service. Everything took place in the same "chapel" which was just a big auditorium. Supposedly they also offered muslim and buddhist services there, but I never actually saw anyone attend them. (You only got to choose one service per week.) One funny thing I noticed was the standard U.S.Navy crucifix. On the altar in the chapel the cross had Jesus nailed to it on one side for the Catholic mass, then they would turn it around for a plain crucifix with "INRI" iscribed in it for the Protestant service. I kept seeing this dual purpose cross throughout my service.

    So who's voted today?

Here we go again. They found another stash of florida ballots from a predominatly democratic county that hadn't been counted yet even though state election officials had already swore that 100% had been counted... Jeb still won, but it makes me wonder.... I bet the Bushies decided to keep some on the side just in case the election got too close. Jeb was planning to win this election no matter what.

IL-2 is pure flying. Multiplayer is pretty cool. Unfortunately for me, most of the players online are hardcore flight sim fans, so I don't stand a chance.  I gave up on multiplayer for this reason.  It's too humiliating.  If I'm not shot down within the first minute of a dog fight, I end up stalling out or going into a spin while trying to get on my opponents six.  It's embarrassing.

Artillery shell shot down by laser!

My knowledge of optics and laser technology may be a bit rusty, but how does this laser actually destroy the projectile? Â From my understanding lasers don't exactly behave like the blasters in Star Wars that seem to explode on impact. Â I assume that in this case the laser beam locks on to the target and heats it up to some ludicrus temprature. Â I can see how this could easily destroy a missile by frying its circuitry, but an artillery shell? Â I guess it must heat up enough to ignite the explosives inside. Â That sounds like one hell of a powerful laser. Â I did'nt even know we could get them that hot using todays technology. Â Any physics majors in here care to shed some light on this?

    Missile attack in yemen

Ok, let me settle this argument once and for all. Ford's law is still intact. I have inside information that the CIA was simply trying to shoot out the tires of the car in question. There was perhaps a slight miscalculation in the type of ordinance used. That's all. There's no assassination, or acts of war, just a simple accident that left a few terrorists smoldering in a crater.

    What a waste of money!

I keep hearing mixed feelings about CFS3. Â I think I have to try it out myself, Â I was a big fan of CFS2 (still have it on my computer) because of all the mods for it, so I'm convinced CFS3 won't let me down too much. Â How does it compare? Â IL-2 is a great game too, probably the best one I've played as far as realism and damage modeling. Â One thing about IL-2 though...for a red-blooded yankee like myself it's hard to stomach having to choose between fighting for Stalin or Hitler... I know it's kind of corny, and a "typical brainwashed american" attitude, but I have to admit that I prefer to imagine myself as a traditional John Wayne type of ace hero. Â Maybe when forgotten battles comes out, I'll feel better. Â I will be able to play as Finland. When are they going to make a good WW1 flight sim again? Â WW1, now that's flying. Â I haven't seen any good ones out there since Red Baron 3D (correct me if I'm wrong). Â The CFS community has made some WW1 mods, but it's just not.... you know... Â I hope CFS4 is WW1.

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to say. The democrats have failed to do what after the terrorist attacks? Sounds like typical Republican BS, trying pathetically to stereotype everyone who does not support Bush. Just like the mud slinging commercials on TV. Tsk tsk. "Don't like Bush? You must be a Commie!" All I'm saying is that destroying the balance of power by making the republicans all-powerful is a dangerous step. I am very weary of any party with total power. It's just not the American way. I'm sorry you're too caught up in 9-11 politics to realize this.

    So who's voted today?

What a disaster, with a Republican majority in the Senate we just turned ol' W into an all-powerful fuerer. Let's hope his advisors can still keep him under control. This is potentially a very dangerous situation. God help us all.
