SLX MOD public release
KiwisDoFly replied to paragraphic l's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
NOTE: SLX is not compatible with dedicated servers yet. You will experience frequent desyncs, crashes, etc. LANs and client-hosted are okay. We are still waiting on Solus to fix the smoke/fire issue. -
Some more photos: http://i4.photobucket.com/albums....-70.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums....-37.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums....-48.jpg Little problem there being the white headlight which dissapeared somehow. That'll be fixed.

The russian army rode on their personnel carriers during Afghanistan and Chechnya because it provides protection against mines and IEDs. If a mine goes off under a BTR you sure as hell don't want to be stuck inside it. Plus in urban environments troops sitting ontop can provide effective protection against concealed anti-tank positions in buildings and such, since turret gunners have limited visibility.

So for some reason my mission.sqm file has a "largo" entry in the addons list. I know all the units I placed and I have no idea what it is. Anyone have any ideas? Also if there is "EditorUpdate_12" listed in the addons and the server doesn't have it, will the mission still work?

Largo in my Mission.sqm
KiwisDoFly replied to KiwisDoFly's topic in ARMA - MISSION EDITING & SCRIPTING
Oops, I actually forgot to mention that if I do remove the "largo" entry, the mission fails to load on the server stating it's missing the addon. If only I knew what it was. -
Sa-33 GORBACHEV

I think Sabretooth is a silly name for a SAM. According to NATO they are supposed to start with G, so make it that.

That marksman guy has one pimpin' hat. -
Man this would be useful for SLX.

I was skeptical at first but then I realized that I actually got more value out of it than I did from Half-Life 2: Episode 1, and I paid more for it than I did for QG. It took me 5 hours to finish EP1, and it took me about 8 or so hours to finish Royal Flush - plus all the new character models I can play with, plus a new island, plus new vehicles, etc. Infact, I got really motivated after beating RF to modify it slightly and add a bunch of high-detailed addon weapons to the arms dealer so I can beat it all over again with the sweet AK103 or even a V94 I actually hope BIS (I know it was Peter Games or something - I forget their name - who actually made QG) releases several packages like this. I'd definitely buy them all.

Uhhh, is it me or do these new sounds sound nothing like Chammy's videos? My steps: 1. Made a copy of the original weapons.pbo and put it into @Chammy folder. 2. Unpacked it there, and replaced the sounds in the data\sounds\ folder. 3. Re-packed the file. 4. Inserted -mod=@Chammy into my shortcut. I run the game, and I get no errors or anything like that. The sounds are definitely changed from the originals so everything appears to be working perfectly. Yet the sounds are nothing like in your videos Chammy. They make a horrible, quiet little "pop" sound and then an echo. It's like someone is tapping a slipper on a bathroom floor tile - thats what both the AK and the M16 sound like (though there are some differences - the former is more metallic). I guess they are okay if you are standing half a kilometer away from the rifle, but no way is it realistic if you are actually holding it.

Awesome, can't wait to try it out.

need help for a TRUE strategy mode in ArmA
KiwisDoFly replied to dznemesis's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
I think the only thing this is missing is being able to actually move around as a unit in the game. The added concern for your own well-being, and having to set-up/relocate/defend your HQ adds a whole new aspect to the strategy part. Even just giving the player a shitty gun and a Humvee would suffice. -
Collection of Undocumented/Lesser-Known Features
KiwisDoFly replied to frederf's topic in ARMA - GENERAL
By the way - it worked in OFP and it here too - if you hold W and E together while driving a vehicle you will actually go faster. -
I got a few minutes to test this and it was awesome. Couple of questions though, 1) Is there a wide variety of weapons available to you or is it only KSVK? Are there explosives? Perhaps you should have used some of the Vilas' weapons as well (I would love a AK74 with a 1P29 sight, or a TRG) 2) The first mission had me kill a bunch of people and there was a humvee. Do the targets move about? Could I theoretically place an explosive charge by the humvee so if they come back to it I can blow it up?

Shoot from moving vehicles
KiwisDoFly replied to [aps]gnat's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Could this be used as part of a vehicle addon instead of a mission script? Say having a blackhawk have a pre-determined sniper position from which he would be able to fire? -
Oh my. So much nerd rage over an early announcement that hasn't even been confirmed by the game developer. Remember that those screenshots are not final at all. Most likely the team behind the expansion just started working on it, and what we are seeing here is either an early work-in-progress or a proof of concept. They might even be placeholders - we don't know and unless BIS comes out and goes "Oh hay look at us we (or 505) are making an expansion ain't that neat" all 10 pages of this thread are just baseless speculation. And like I said, since it hasn't been officially and widely announced yet what we are seeing here is pretty much a rumour-mill kind of situation. A website got hold of some information, then another copied that post and added some roughly made-up "facts", like how the expansion will include the 1.08 patch, to appear more informed than any other news source, then another did the same and so on. Nothing is set in stone, and raging out on it is absolutely stupid.

PLR with you every damn day is a T90 vs M1A1 argument.

The problem here is that we, as humans, tend to think we can do anything while sitting in our comfy chairs, miles away from any danger. I'm sitting here right now and thinking, hay, I bet I could throw a basketball and hit that hoop over there easily right from here. It's the same with war - you can sit here all you want, hidden behind your computer, spewing garbage about how awesome you'd be at war and how you'll be killing entire armies by yourself. The problem, however, is that thinking about it is not the same as actually being there. And heres another thing, the military and the people are two different entities. Any military in any parts of the world wants anyone it can get it's hands on - and especially those who sit at home, all comfy and shit, and think "Yeah, I could take a human life". Plus the military always offered rewards to people - free college after serving, good money, etc. So it's always been a way for people with financial problems to achieve a higher goal. Think of this scenario: you come from Rural Bumfuck, a town in the middle of nowhere and where theres very little work except farming. You don't want farming - you want to go and be a doctor or a scientist, whatever. How do you do it? Well, you sign up for the army, thinking it's only 2 years and there isn't a war on so you'll sit it out without even leaving the country. Then suddenly BOOM! Theres a war going on! And so you are sent off to kill humans - and thats where the real question arises: can you kill someone? Can you kill someone when there are dead and horrendously wounded people all around you, when you see people torn apart and burned. Would you be able to pick up a rifle and add to the devastation? And then again coming back to my original point, if an enemy country is invading yours and you are told "Here Johnny, save your motherland!" - you are going to think "Fuck yeah, those guys are evil and I have a gun, and I can kill them all, and I won't let them touch my family and my favourite dog". In reality, though, you get to the front and for the first time you see that one enemy soldier running towards you - you are not going to think "Those guys want our land and we can't let them have it!" - no, it will just be you and a rifle and another person just like yourself, who has thoughts and dreams, with a family to protect. Would you be able to shoot then? Probably not. The truth about all wars is that they are fought by senile old men with an agenda, who send the young to do their fighting for them. Unless you have been in a war - a real war like WW2 or Vietnam, or Chechnya, or Falkland Islands, etc - this thread is futile.

Vilas you are awesome and I absolutely love your mods. But would you be able to make it so that guns using the default ArmA weapon sounds would actually take them from the default weapons, so that they would be affected by sound replacement mods like FDF Sounds? What I mean is that, if I for example install a sound mod that replaces the sounds of the default AK74, could you make it so that your AK74 in your addonpack would use those sounds as well, and not the original ArmA ones?
-
I would love it if people made more SP missions that use Vilas addons to their full potential, and also if someone could convert existing missions to use those addons.

Stripped down, OFP-like graphics, anyone?
KiwisDoFly replied to 5133p39's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
I'd like to comment on this because this isn't true in game development. Stuff like AI, gameplay balancing, engine development, game art, etc are not done by the same team within the company. And there is no specific budget allocation either - the whole project is under one budget. So essentially, what I'm saying, is that if the game engine sucks and is unoptimized, or the gameplay is unbalanced - don't go blaming it on "mainstream" and accuse the devs of "selling out" and "appealing to the masses". Blame the guy who didn't think something through, or didn't have enough skills to optimize the engine, etc. Just thought I'd mention. -
Is there an overview or something of what the mod actually does? You know, like what new features it adds, etc. Your website seems to be down.

Do you want the 'Psycho Slayer' in ArmA ?
KiwisDoFly replied to 5133p39's topic in ARMA - USER MISSIONS
Are you planning on keeping the mission tied to Sara Lite, or are you going to port it to the full Sara island when you release it? It's just that I've been trying to keep my server addon-free and it would really suck if I forced people to download an entire island just to play your mission. -
I installed your mod on our server and everyone who played loved it to bits. The only thing we didn't like was that the tanks are way, way too quiet. I do have a couple of questions: 1) Like I said, we loved the sound pack, but the tanks are too quiet. I'd like to know if this is going to be fixed? 2) A couple of our players reported problems with their sounds - no shooting sounds, very quiet chopper sounds which suddenly become super-loud, and so on. They tried switching hardware acceleration and EAX on/off but it didn't help much. Has this ever been reported by anyone else? Otherwise, thank you for this awesome sound pack. It really makes ArmA a lot more enjoyable.
