  1. AI / Micro AI is already awesome. It adapts well and handles most situations ranging from large scale battles to a few units clearing out urban areas.

What would be a nice improvement is AI using buildings more effectively. Ambushing from cover should be hard coded and work with unscripted missions.

Also, AI commanders in warfare should be able to buy AIR units for both transportation and assault. It worked well with Oden warfare, Swedish forces.

  2. Units is something this game have plenty of. More official maps with WF support would be nice however. Granted it is a lot more work to create good enough maps compared to making new units, but as for now ARMA OA only have two, Chernarus and Takistan.

A more realistic VBS style map for large scale warfare would be awesome. Even if less detailed, a huge map with life sized cities would offer a new experience to the series. You would have to rely more on air force and transportation to get around.

    Just a thought :D

  3. Yes I only play vanilla. Sorry for being unclear. Using mods prevents me from picking up where I left off. I normally play rather huge CTI/WF vs AI commanders that can take hours to win on expert.

AI commanders need the ability to buy air units. Skies feel empty and makes offline WF half-arsed.

Also. What happened to the "Seen anything?" conv script? In OA you always get "Yes I saw something" or "No I didn't see anything" ?? It was the only useful part of that script!

Also. Civilians and civ vehicles doesn't work in OA WF. It's too bad bec civ wheels are often the saviour when you are stranded and in need of transportation. Civs also add atmosphere! Now Takistan is a ghost island with empty cities :/ very post apocalyptic.

With those features fixed ARMA 2 OA would be close to perfect. It's the only military grade sim with dynamic and unscripted battlefields (WF) that combines strategy, tactics and FP action.

    Just a thought :scratchchin:

  4. No, its absolutely impossible. I spawned behind the tank. The tank was facing directly away from me. I spawned only about 5 meters away, got on the M2 which was 4 meters away, and it turned its turret around.

There is no way to communicate something that you do not see. There is no excuse for this, there is no way to refute it. It is simply impossible.

Maybe spawning makes a loud supersonic bang :D

  5. I've been playing with the AI and when attacking me they seem much better than ArmaI and seek out cover, however the AI in my unit seem to have no clue what to do.

They Ai will follow me but stand in the middle of the street trying to shoot it out and from then on I don't seem to have much control over them, if I order the medic to move to my location he goes off and joins the fight, I've never been able to use him to heal myself.

Make sure to put your team (especially infantry) in "Danger" and "Keep low".

Also, using Line formation in open ares (with flanks covered) and Column on streets seems to work the best. They still spread out taking cover from behind walls and such.

In urban areas I also use "Advance" a lot while covering my team from behind checking the flanks. Normally, my team advance in a leap frog manner covering each other automatically.

  6. You are entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts.

Don't get ticked off by Codies disinformation agents/fanboys roaming around trying to discredit and ridicule ARMA2. When it comes to military realism, complexity and depth, both online and offline, then ARMA2 stands alone against the mass. Doubt it not.

  7. ... but I don't want to run lower than native resolution on my LCD.

You can run windowed "-window" if you want to lower the rendering resolution and keep your monitors native resolution. I run it windowed in 1280x on my 1920x LCD.

  8. The community is why I buy these games. Some of the guys that made mods for Arma 1 are so good at what they do it makes me wonder if BIS just got lazy and said F*** it let the community test and fix it.

How nice of BIS to think of us :D

Seriously. ARMA had a lot of problems too, but look how it turned out. I can't wait to see what the community will do with this one. Issues with official missions will most likely be ironed out by BIS though.

ARMA2 was just released, and it's no simple arcade shooter on rails. Give it some time.

  9. SM 3 means you can implement longer (and more complex shaders). If you would implement the same simple shaders in SM2 and SM3, you should get roughly the same performance.

That said, implementing SM2-level shaders for ArmA II seems out of question for me, as some shaders would have to be cut way to much and the result would be very ugly.

If you think you are shader limited, the best way to improve your performance is to slightly lower the Rendering resolution. If this does not help, it means you are not shader limited and using simpler shaders would not help.

Thanks for shedding some light on this subject Suma. If you have other tips regarding performance tweaking, other then lowering rendering resolution, let us know.

    Cheers

  10. That makes no sense. The whole point of SM3 is to allow for more optimisation and better performance than SM2.

    SM2 would decrease performance.

Based on what I've read, at least.

Looking at the ArmA 1 files, they introduced SM3 in a patch and it came with a major performance improvement on SM3 cards. Previously ArmA1 only has SM2.

Thanks for clearing that up. When I reverted to SM2 in CoH I doubled my performance. I figured SM3 was a bit heavy on DX9 cards. I run ARMA2 on a laptop :) with a 7950GTX Go 512DDR3 DX9.

I get about 20fps "at best" in 1280x with everything on normal and post disabled. Looks pretty good, but I can't stand the lag. I run ARMA1 in 1280x everything on high + post + AA and long view distance. Looks amazing and runs like a dream.

Oh well.. I guess the new AI is hard on the CPU.

  11. Had a superpower running with AI command for a few hours now, just to see what happens.

Not seen any aircraft organised by the AI commanders yet..

I manually bought a couple of choppers and just been controlling the AI pilots and gunners via the map, and they are kicking some serious ass :)

I noticed the same thing. It's too bad because I really enjoy offline warfare with AI only for the clean war experience it offers. If AI won't buy air units it will cause too much unbalance and guarantee the player victory. If you take out enemy AA with a few well places hellfire missiles, then you can wipe out half the map with a single AH-1Z.

Besides, ARMA2 got so many beautiful air units. It's a sin not using them.

  12. Did you try upping the HDR to 16? It really makes a big difference, the higher you up it, the better it works, but the bigger performance hit.

Nope I'm already running it on a laptop so I won't crank up anything that would hit performance.
