Greetings all, I am a touch typist so my natural hand position on the keyboard is the ASDF not the WASD that many other gamers use. Any other folks like me care to share how they have bound their keys? Having some issues with stance and movement rates. Some things are not functioning as expected. Figure if I can over write my config with someone's version I can see if there might be an underlying hardware issue or if it is only software. Thanks for any help.

Re-Skin Mod, IMW Mod, CS Mod v1.0
Gecko1969 replied to EvEnLeaSe44's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Thanks for the clarification. While I like re-skins and all, I will probably just use the sounds if they turn out as well as I hope they will. Glad to hear they are separate and glad to see you all working together. Many hands make light of work and that jazz. Good luck to you all and looking forward to teasers and first releases. -
Rg, Great stuff man! Giving the user more options to tweak FOV/UI/Zoom/etc as they see fit is the best way to go. If there was an easy way to toggle all options (like a config file, not sure such thing is possible) that would even be better, but the work you have done is such a great step in the right direction. Thanks Again

Wipman, enjoy your work and have been running around with a slightly modified "Punks Not Dead". While not a "request" this is more possible inspiration for some future work in the same line. A link to a Maori chief face tattoo. Hunted around for better/more examples but no luck: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news....ku.html Keep up the great work and thanks again for sharing your creations and helping people out. Regards

The instructions say to extract "the folder" NOT "the contents of the folder" in to the ARMA directory. There is a difference. Besides the readme file there is only the @TrueVeiw folder with it's contents.

While not free I have V.A.C. which works great. I got a config file off of the SimHQ forums. I have shout installed, but as I had V.A.C. installed and working I have not had the time to re-invent the wheel.

Yet another ArmA sound modification
Gecko1969 replied to chammy's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
To get a pure sound you need an acoustically "dead" room. These are made using foam and a zig zag shaped room among other things. I have walked in to one of these rooms and it makes you feel like someone is smothering you. When you speak the sound comes out but dies instantly as there is next to no reflection in the room. Shooting a gun of any size would be difficult in such a room and the equipment that could record such loud sound levels are not easy to come by (digital recording devices could capture the levels but the microphone to do such a thing is not common). That said the work that all these sound mod fellows are doing (FDF, ModWar, this un-named one, and others) is great stuff. Maybe a way to pick and choose the sounds you like in each would be nice but the pack's sounds are leveled to each other not other sound packs. So I will stand back and cheer on all the hard work and criticize no one, except the critics as all this is subjective. Either you like it or you don't. -
Guess that is a good enough of a Tit for Tat there for piss poor comment. Won't go poking at the insights Hindus had going on for many hundreds of year prior to Islam. Not like I care either way.

No but it's all contracts made by basically the same company (same people working at "different" companies is all a bunch of paper nothing more). And you are very right that it's to prevent the community from making the changes on their own. But it's not like it'd take more than a swipe of the pen (delete key on the keyboard) to change the contract and the technical side is not the issue. Again Money, Money, and lack of money to be made. Get 100,000 (pulled that number out of the sky) or more fans willing to shell out some where near the 50% price point of the full VBS2 and VBS2-lite will magically appear.

Wow! Why are these guys even allowed on the Forums? With all the rules here I'd guess promoting pirating the software and promoting sites that are how to's would get you out of here. . . Tough call for the Admin though. Bans will feed the hate but silence the yapping cur (They seem to love/hate as they play but pirate). Hate to make the call.

What is this "illegal" stuff? Go to VBS2 website and check out the support links. . . Takes you to this forum. . . BIS owns both. Anything preventing the exchange is made by BIS to prevent it for marketing reasons only, not due to any laws but contractual obligations made BY BIS. The same engine runs both, but time/money is the factor here. Want to pay (guessing amount here) $300 USD or more for VBS2 lite, that is the only way. AND you need enough other people willing to cough up that kind of money, ain't going to happen. No "laws" or technology barriers here simple Market forces.

And your expectations that you can do the things you listed with Tanks and Helos shows you miss the simulation part of the game. But all the write ups that were done by anyone who knew the history of the game mostly make a point that it is an infantry centered game not a Tank or whatever simulator. So your expectations of how things work is off. I will blame movies and the portrayal of combat they give to let you off the hook (the number of times I have seen people pulled out of a crashed car by well meaning bystanders because they expect the car to burst in to flames is a similar thing). Your idea of what is fun and others' idea are not matching up. Fine we all can have our opinions. However the direction you would like to go has been done already it is called Battle Field 2 and you can pick it up today. The core of this community has no interest in seeing ArmA become a repeat of BF2, so don't take it personally that you get people defending it against the ideas you think are great. Different expectations and a different game. Change one to solve your problem but don't expect to find yourself welcomed by those who don't share your views and don't take it personal.

If damage was done differently then you could conceivably take out a tank with ONE DU round IF it hit the ammo. DU is like a knife through butter, so landing 10 rounds on a tank should end it if they are direct hits. There are a fair more than 10 rounds in a one second burst so feeling that A10 is out of balance for doing so is a bit off base. The whole point of the A10 is that it's a tank killer and yes it will unbalance a game if you insist on using it in every game. Again it seems people are getting too attached to the equipment side of what is supposed to be an infantry "sim". I'd love to see the armor and air and water craft all done to "sim" level of detail, but that is not what BIS is selling. The next best thing they can do is leave things open enough so that people who have the time/skill can add more detail as they feel is needed. Which from what I have seen is the general direction they are going. So the BIS A10 flies, kills tanks (saw that there might be an issue with AI, not confirmed, but nothing that can't be fixed) and fills the role. Seems good enough. "Mission accomplished".

Uhh OK. If you feel new features are not important then I can respect your opinion, but I think you will find yourself in the small minority of people. Of all the features in VBS2 that are not in ArmA even some of the smallest would have more people wanting them added (especially if this would be something very hard or impossible of the Mod community to do) compared to issues about recoil that do not break the game by any stretch of the imagination. I understand if it's too hard for you to cope with having to compensate for excessive recoil and if that ruins the game for you then I do feel poorly for you. Big picture though. Most folks would love to have more VBS2 type functionality, better FPS, smoother graphics, etc. Not sure I follow what you are asking in the last part about Mods. As the US release is just now going out the door I would say it is rather amazing how many mods there are for ArmA now and it will only get better and more variety once the tools are released. And many of the Mods are coming from OFP and many rock!
-
Which will be one of the Many Things the community will change as time goes on. I'd rather BIS spent time to add a feature or fix more bugs than tweak things that are always going to be criticized and can/will be changed easily by the community in up coming Mods that will promote more realism than you can handle. "You want Realism! You can't handle The Realism!".

Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures for ArmA
Gecko1969 replied to dslyecxi's topic in ARMA - GENERAL
The merger gave me some confusion as I could not understand how the thread was getting OT. . . So on topic(s) I have found the guide a great read and look forward to more revisions when they come. My game play has changed when fighting the AI. Side note I need to try out some of the Advanced AI setups others are doing to see what the changes are. I won't go in to all the changes I have done to survive the AI but will give one example. The "vision" of the AI is such that they do not scan a view of the area, but see every part with equal "awareness". So while getting on a roof of a tall building would be valid against humans all it does is allow every AI within range to see you as well as if you were standing in a flat open lot. Same with looking out a window or balcony. If an AI was below five levels down on the street, but happened to be facing the building you were in, the moment you move to the edge to look down on them they instantly "see" you above them and proceed to shoot you in the little bit of your head that you have exposed. To give the AI more realistic vision is hard and can be expensive CPU wise, so I understand why BIS did it this way, but hope the community will create better solutions so that real world tactics work better. I don't play any of the other forms and comments like spawn camping confirm why I'd never go back to it (much of that is map makers fault anyway). But parts of the guide should help any beginner player to work together better, and communicate more effectively. I stand by the adage to the effect of "No plan holds up to first contact" but knowing what roles are needed and what needs to be done sure help. -
If I turn on MS Speech Recognition ArmA will begin to load and will show for a split second the menu screen then it CTD without any error messages. If I start ArmA first then ALT-TAB out to Desktop and start the Speech Recognition, ArmA takes back the foreground and shows the message shutting down but it seems to hang. I can bring up task manager at that point but I can not see it so I just guess the keystrokes to restart the machine. Other details; Turning on the Speech Recognition with BF2-PR runs fine. The main reason I am running Speech Recognition is to use some software called VAC which others are running with ArmA (going to check with them about issues also). The way that ArmA is CTD is similar to when I had Demon installed with Secure ROM does not like. I un-installed it and ArmA ran fine. I have already ran the Analysis software and sent in the file to Secure ROM and they replied that they saw nothing wrong (I made sure the Speech software was running at the time). Any help/leads greatly needed. TIA and Regards, Curtis Specs: XP Pro with SP2 (Build 2600) and all latest patches. Athlon XP 2400+ 1.5Gig RAM Asus A7V8X with latest BIOS Nvidia XFX 6800 XT 256MB with latest drivers Creative SB Audigy 4 Pro with latest drivers DirectX 9.0c ArmA 1.05 the 505 version

Solved: Turn off the Speech Recognition as a service and VAC will still run fine with out it. Make sure under the Speech configuration that the "Extend Service to All other Applications" box is unchecked.

Once the mapping tools are released it would be an interesting back story if Arma can handle a river delta instead of a cold war era back ground it seems to default to. Here is a good write up on the situation: http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2007/02/junger200702 Think Heart of Darkness with River Pirates. Hostage rescue and river patrols. Maybe as UN, US, Nigerian Regular or Merc units vs. local units in asymmetrical warfare. Using Google Earth gives a nice birds eye view of the area. The max map size is 200Km squared correct? Anyone interested can PM me or post to this thread. Thanks Edit for space: Great to hear IceBreaker! I will keep my eyes open for that then.

My first post (that I remember, duh. Old age). So my question is I have some funds to buy a new computer. There are limits (aren't there always), so I need to get input as to what is the better bang for money. I see that the Dual processors are not supported. Is there an official word on if this is or is not going to happen? If not I guess sticking to and AMD product would be the best route. Next question. I am an NVIDIA fan and have been happy with them for long time (honestly never owned an ATI product, so I am very biased) and I am looking at their line up. What is the current state with SLI? Must I buy exactly the same Make (Mark) to use SLI? I know the same model must be used but if I use NVIDIA drivers shouldn't I be able to pick up a single card now then a cheaper one later? As I run XP and I hear DirectX 10 is not coming to XP (a ploy to get people to buy Vista bloat) is holding out and dreaming of then ext gen hardware worth it? Besides that I am sure to have at least 2 gig of RAM (the fastest timing I can get). And I am hunting around for a nice deal on a used sound card. Any other suggestions? Thanks and I am looking forward to the US release though I may break down and order it from the import stores. Looking forward to multiplayer gaming with some of you.

Glad to see the Demo out. However having one thread for trouble shooting is really messy. Why not have a section so we can sort out the problems in sections like video, network and so on? So I am having a network issue. I have looked at the FAQ and the Wikki which were of no help. If I host a game there are no problems the game starts and shortly there are other players in the game and off we go. If I use the "game browser" AKA the GameSpy it's a different story. Some server I try to join I don't even connect and drop back to the game browser with some sort of connection error. From reading here in the forum that seems to mean I was joining a non-Demo server (again why I am even allowed to see these servers and why they are not automatically filtered is an oversight). So I find a server that seems to let me connect. The first screen I see has all sorts of sections that look like they should have data regarding the players and teams but all the "boxes" in these sections are empty. The only things on the screen I can interact with is a Disconnect and a Join/OK button. Disconnect does what it should and takes me back to the Game Browser. Also on this screen I see messages in the upper left that tell me which players are connecting, connected, disconnected, died, and once in a while I see a Global message from one of the players in the game. I use the "/" key to try and type messages which do show up on my screen but I am not sure the messages are being seen by the players. So my last choice is to "Join". This will take me to some loading screens (sometimes) or else I go right to a receiving mission data screen which is all black with no progress bar and again I can see messages in the upper left corner just like the screen before. I wait and I wait. I have waited well over 10 minutes on this screen. With no indication that anything is going one. I do see my hard drive light going on and off so there is disk activity. Again I can type messages in the global channel and I have had conversations with others in game and others waiting for the game to load. So now 95% of the time it just sits on this screen until I ALT-TAB out and kill the game via the Task Manager as trying to ESC out of the load screen does not work. The other 5% I move on to the loading data screen that looks EXACTLY the same as the screen before except the words have changed. Then MAYBE this will pass on to the game but most likely it just sits on this screen. OK if I make it past those two screens the "game" goes something like this. I enter the game I can see my player model standing with rifle in hand and I have the message box telling me I am dead and a pithy quote to sooth my soul and the neato choices of Disconnect or some other option I don't remember (I have only seen this part like once or twice). Then I somehow end up at the Mission briefing screen which has no mission text but I can see the names and pings of the other players and me in the far right side. I can even get to the screen that shows me the other gear avaliable but I am not able to change anything here. Going back to the screen I can choose to play or exit. If I choose play I can then see the topo map. Then often the cycle repeats where I join the game with my player model (looking very alive and GungHo with rifle in hand) but the message telling me I am dead, etc, etc. Then maybe after doing this fun loop about three times tops the game crashes to desk top with the usual send an error to Microsoft option. So what to do? I have re-installed, turn off my firewall (though I hated to do it. AND why is the ports needed to run the game NOT listed in the FAQ or the Wikii??) with no change to the pattern. As the game runs fine when I host the game I see no reason to list my specs as it's NOT a hardware issue of running the game. Something is hosed in the network side. I hope a patch is planned for the Demo as it is not making me want to buy the game. Thanks for reading if you have read this.
