Do you mean that you want the AI to be able to call in arty (say, light mortars) on the fly based on the current tactical situation? That sounds like Hard Work, and I don't know of any scripts that allow you to do that. But it might be possible. For example, you could maybe periodically count the known soft targets of some group's leader. If he knows more than X such targets in a certain area, and there are no friendlies in that area, you could auto-start a mortar splash there after a certain delay. Then add another delay for the "invisible mortar team" to relocate before the script loops to allow another fire mission. This wouldn't lead moving targets, though. The real trick would be to decide when there's enough targets in an area to warrant a fire mission, without eating up too much CPU. The gameplay problem is, do you really want the AI to be able to summon the Hand of God on you? Sounds like I've gotta do some scripting this weekend.

Yeah, it's hard to type when you've got your head in your ass. I'm trying right now, and I can't see shit. Well, actually...

May I suggest you convert to Ghost Recon? It could be that the devs of GR aren't quite the cultist Taliban evil-doers that BIS are. I hear the Deer Hunter series also has quite a following, which could mean that the DH devs are bonafide saints.

As long as I can fire up the mission editor and write my own missions I won't get tired of OFP. As long as I can modify the AI behaviour with scripts I won't get tired of OFP. As long as I can buy high-quality add-ons - preferably with vehicles I can use in my own missions - I won't get tired of OFP. As long as BIS continues to support and improve OFP through patches I won't get tired of OFP.

You mean... with bow and arrow?

Maybe it's just the natural step from the Valve method. Hopefully the BIS method will ensure a higher degree of quality in the mods that actually surface. I've tried enough crappy, half-cooked, forever-in-alpha mods to cool me off on the whole thing. I don't mind paying good money for high-quality products, but I do mind wasting my quality time on out-of-whack free stuff written by some overly l33t kid who really oughta be hacking the Linux kernel.

I guess there's no need to answer the question anymore, as the official OFP:Resistance site just opened.

Could be simply a matter of practice. I had a hard time with tanks too, but I got the hang of it eventually. If you think commanding a tank is confusing you should try a Bradley.

My brother and I really need to keep in touch more. In any case, I consider the money well spent. At least I didn't waste it on hookers, gin and Pokémon cards.

Red Hammer is a nice campaign with a different "feel" to it, but IMHO it's not quite as good as the excellent original campaign. I'd get RH just for the Russian-accented voices, though. The hint book/pdf provided with RH isn't too great, and you can get the same help on these boards for free, but it's a handy walkthrough/spoiler for newcomers. Go buy it.

Advance cautiously and kill armor. Ditch ride once Hind comes looking. Jog to base. Spread hurt liberally. Free buddy and get him some tools. Now you're home free. Leasurely sneak back to extraction point the way you came. CQB inside the enemy base was pretty fun, but an outright massacre. Aggression is sometimes better than caution, I guess. In any case, if you want the job done, do it on foot. Going armor will only get you dead.

Spotting targets will greatly improve the efficiency of the AI, and is IMHO one of the most important tasks when playing as part of a squad in OFP.

I foresee a free netcode patch, an expansion, and a "Platinum" version including the original OFP, Resistance, and possibly also RH. That should keep OFP fresh on the store shelves, and a happy, growing online community will keep spreading the gospel to prospective buyers.

More OFP goodness. Delightful! I'm curious about what the "build an army" bit means. Is it just creative marketing or will we see some really ingenious campaign design?

Two different units flying in formation
Gaswell replied to kfine's topic in OFP : MISSION EDITING & SCRIPTING
When two grouped helos take off, the second won't start its engine until the leader has actually lifted off. In other words, the leader gets a head start. To get around this, you could try to ungroup the helos then set separate waypoints so that they'll take off simultaneously. Once they're both airborne you could always join them up. As DnA said there are issues with the helo AI. Sometimes when travelling long distances two grouped helos will start to do "spontaneous bounding overwatch". The collision avoidance is also pretty weak. Some combinations of combat stances and speed modes seem to work better than others, though. -
snYpir's "Operation Axe-Point".

I'd be reluctant to go into OFP combat without a medic. Only wish the AI medics weren't so keen on rushing forward into a wall of fire to heal friendlies. Same goes for ambulances. Brave but stupid. Similar problem shows up when AI medics self-heals. They get hit, stop dead in their tracks, and start healing themselves on the spot - giving me ample time to deliver 3 rounds on target. That's just plain stupid. How 'bout the medic AI not answering any calls until the group leader says all clear?

Anyways... what does it mean?

CreateUnit Bug/Missing function
Gaswell replied to PiNs_Da_Smoka's topic in OFP : MISSION EDITING & SCRIPTING
If you really need to refer to a created unit, what about something like: "SoldierWB" createUnit [getMarkerPos "barracks", groupAlpha] soldier2 = (units groupAlpha) select ((count units groupAlpha)-1) Couldn't you then use the soldier2 var to do the stuff you want? -
Get a rodent that lets you modify the sensitivity on the fly. I'm happy with my Razor Boomslang, and there's gotta be other mice that'll let you do the same thing.
