F3 Mission Development Framework for Arma 3 F3 v3-4-1 Released (ACRE2/ACRE/TFR/Zeus Ready) The F3 team is pleased to announce the release of v3-4-1 of its mission development framework, which now supports APEX. As ever, optional support for Zeus and popular mods ACRE2 and TFR is included. The producers of this release were Wolfenswan and Fer. So ... this topic came up as a topic in Discord a few days back, and I promised PTFHawkins I'd post my idea someplace; so here it is: The term 'MilSim' is often used with reference to communities that play Arma as a military simulation (as opposed to those that coalesce around game-modes like KOTH, Altis Life etc.), but its simplicity masks a very broad range of different experiences for players. You might have run into the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) for describing the preferences individuals have for perceiving the world around them and making decisions. The MBTI considers 4 separate dimensions, each with 2 possible options, and expresses each of the possible 16 combinations as a 4-character code. Thus, you know that 'ISTJ' means a person with preferences for [I]ntroversion, [S]ensing, [T]hinking, and [J]udgement - factors that are explained more fully in the detailed definition of that type. What if we used a similar, multi-dimensional approach to quickly and sympathetically describe Arma communities? First of all, this isn't a suggestion for describing ALL communities; specifically, it focuses on those that: - Have a concept of 'membership' - Play their own missions, which predominantly explore warfare themes (conventional and irregular) - Conduct regularly scheduled sessions or operations - Provide social spaces for members outside of the game server(s), such as Discord Out of scope for this suggestion are communities that: - Focus on a single game-mode (e.g. KOTH) run 24/7 on a public server - Focus on Altis Life, DayZ (mod) or other major conversion Additionally, in considering the possible dimensions I've omitted logistical aspects like timezone or mods because I think those can often be safely assumed or are communicated easily. The suggested dimensions are: - In-game STYLE - Out-of-game CULTURE - Ease of attaining MEMBERSHIP - Approach to COMPETENCE - PARTICIPATION expectations And here are the suggested values, expressed as answers to 5 questions: 1. What is the in-game STYLE of the community? [O]RGANISED - In-game co-ordination and hierarchy (and no lone wolves). [M]ILITARY - Simulation of real-world military tactics, techniques and procedures. 2. What is the out-of-game CULTURE of the community? [S]OCIAL - Club-like atmosphere (if hierarchy exists, its focus is administration not role-play). [R]OLE-PLAY - Role-play of real-world military structures and conduct (ranks and discipline) . 3. How is MEMBERSHIP attained? [E]LECTIVE - Membership is effectively self-selecting (though there may be mechanisms for removing members). [S]ELECTIVE - Memberships is by application, and candidates may need to pass tests. 4. What is the approach to COMPETENCE? [R]ELAXED - Come as you are (there may be optional training and/or TTP links if you're interested). [T]RAINED - You're expected to train in and adopt in-game community TTPs. 5. What are the expectations of PARTICIPATION by members? [C]ASUAL - You're encouraged, but not required, to play in scheduled sessions. [R]EQUIRED - You're expected to meet a minimum level of participation. I'd describe my home community - Republic of Folk - as [OSERC], because despite being quite organised in-game we are otherwise relaxed about almost everything else (except the fact that we are the legitimate government of Folk). Perhaps you're part of a community that seeks to simulate being in a military unit both in and out of game, with high expectations for training and participation, and tests that prospective members must pass. Would you use [MRSTR] to describe your unit? Or perhaps you're part of a community (and I know a few like this) that focus a lot on in-game, realistic military approaches and expect their members to participate a lot - but aren't interested in out-of-game role-play. Would [MSSTR] descibe that? Maybe this - or something like it - is a better approach than trying to agree a single definition for 'MilSim', or perhaps you can think of a better alternative? Answers on a postcard please. Or forum post. Or Discord comment. Wait, do young people even know what a postcard is?

I've also encountered this. What isn't clear yet is whether or not this is something BI will fix in a future patch or not - because it seems pointless to put all that new functionality into 3DEN and then require code to be manually inserted into description.ext -

Thanks for the background, Tuskegee - and was that you posting to our documentation issue for v3-4-1? We've just updated the mission header page (and released v3-4-1 ... see next post). There are no plans at the moment, but I'll bet some ACE-using communities will have done this work already. I'll ask around and see if there is something that can be shared. -

Hi Tuskegee_99th - You're absolutely right. There were a number of issues with the assignGear scripts which have just been fixed as part of our upcoming v3-4-1 release. However, if you'd like to grab them right now just use the contents of our Dev branch on GitHub: https://github.com/ferstaberinde/F3/tree/dev BTW, what community do you play with and have you guys created your own variant of F3? :) -

F3 v3-3-0 downloads For anyone who uses the F3 mission development framework, you might might be interested to know that since its release in April 2015, F3 v3-3-0 has been downloaded over 2,000 times, from over 70 countries. And those figures don't take into account the many Arma groups that use F3 as the basis for their own frameworks - downloads of which we can't track. Approaching 10 years of Fx You might also be interested to know that the framework's 10-year anniversary is approaching in January 2017. Over nearly a *decade* of work we've been lucky enough to have dozens of contributors and the support of many key Arma groups and community figures (check out the readme file sometime). Next, Apex ... I'm happy to report that work on F3 v3-4-0 is already well underway. We're updating the framework to support the new terrain and content in the Apex expansion. Expect to see new and updated pre-placed platoons and gear scripts, a new default Orbat, and better integration with the Eden 3D editor. The next release will continue to be 100% SQM and SQF (with no requirement for any addons), and as ever will feature well-commented code and extensive documentation on our wiki. We hope to have this version ready in the coming weeks. ... but *you* make the missions So head to Tanoa and start looking for your next mission's location. The guys with the AKs should be with you shortly ... - Fer :) -

Hi JAndrews1 - Hard to tell from just the error message. If you can post a ZIP of the mission folder (i.e. NOT the PBO), we could do a quick diff against the current F3 (assuming you are using v3-3-0) and see what you have changed. Thanks - Fer :) -

As Snippers points out, there is an underlying issue with the timing of when params are available. For F3, the the only obvious impact is on the backpacks - but in missions with custom scripts that impacted gear selections (e.g. changing the main rifle) we have also seen the bug (?) create issues. We're chasing the ticket. That might be possible in the future - good to hear the idea, thanks for posting :) -

Very sad news, Kju - few OFP-era contributors are left, it seems, and you've always been at the absolute forefront. Thank you so much for all the many projects and initiatives you have created or helped take flight. Best of luck with the next chapter. -
ArmA 3 can be daunting. You might worry that to experience 'tactical' gameplay you must learn how to use mods before 'applying' to a MilSim group and passing a 'test'. Don't worry Folk ARPS believe all the best experiences begin with a great community, not a mod-set. We've been providing tactical gameplay *without* mods, applications or tests since 2010. Our regular ArmA 3 sessions, played at 19:20 UK on Tuesdays and Sundays, feature 15-35 players with consistent in-game organisation, multi-layered comms and a mix of coop and adversarial missions created by us (most without respawn or revive). We're organised, not MilSim. There are no ranks or mandatory training, and no minimum attendance requirements at all; just friendly people. Everyone is welcome You only need the latest non-dev version of ArmA 3 and TeamSpeak 3. There are no applications or tests. We only ask that you read these threads: Getting started with ArmA 3 and Folk ARPS Getting started with TeamSpeak 3 (for ArmA 3) What is the Folk ARPS platoon (for ArmA 3)? @ Chairborne - Can you confirm which version of F3 you are using when experiencing these bugs? Would also be great to know: Server OS, whether you are using Arma 3 stable or dev, # of players connected to the server, whether or not you are using any mods, etc. We'll be looking into this as part of the bug fixes for v3-2-1. Edit: Heh heh, looks like Wolfenswan is already on the case! -
