Does war have to look real to feel real to you?

<Morbid> Not until virtual reality reaches the level of The Matrix.... when I can be splattered with blood from the guy standing next to me and actually feel its warmth amongst the lumpy grey matter of his brain. </Morbid> No, altering the looks doesn't matter.... as atmosphere rather than looks counts more to me. But to make it really feel like true war, it would have to be either the Matrix.. or a real war..

    Gta mod?

I disagree... I think GTA 3 is rather fun... I've played through it once and am doing so again. Its nice just to get into cars and race around the city doing your own thing. Sure it may not have the best graphics in the world, and it may be unrealistic, but really, if there hadn't been a demand for it, it wouldn't have been made. Even after GTA 2 the number of wishlists for a sequel were enormous.
  3. Okay, I'm curious... why did the Prague zoo let its elephant drown without even letting it out of its cage? They rescued all of the other animals when suddenly someone thought "Oh gee, what about the animals.." So why didn't they also rescue the elephant.. an animal which I might add is an endangered species. Now this might be the start of a flame war here, but why is human life put above that of a species that we as a species have made endangered?

Does war have to look real to feel real to you?

The reason computer games will never feel like real war is because you don't have to worry about dying. Loose your life.. simply reload from the last point you saved. Until there is the desire to keep your character alive, there will never be the remote sensation of realism.

The right to keep and bear arms?

A nice quote (unfortunately I can't remember who by) goes well in this situation. I think every Man, Woman and Child should be allowed to have their firearm of choice. But I also think I should be the only one given Ammo, for I wouldn't trust the rest of you bastards with anything more dangerous than a sling shot.

    Hiroshima: 57 years

Warin: It was printed in an article of Australia's Courier Mail. Unfortunately it was a while ago, and I never considered having to save the article to prove a point months later. I am sure if you did some research you would be able to find other documents to back up this claim. Okay, one other point.. Japan was one of the countries that did not sign the Geneva convention. Therefore, just as they did not recognize it in application to any Prisoners of War, the Geneva convention did not apply to any Japanese prisoners of war, or civilians. Despite that fact, Japanese prisoners were still treated decently by the allies, though the Japs believed that being captured brough great shame upon themselves and their families. As for the statments by Montgomery and Eisenhower, who are they really to talk? They were generals, therefore they didn't have to risk their lives retaking all the Islands from the Japanese. Ask the footsoldiers, Naval personal and airmen who fought in the Pacific theatre, and I am sure the majority of them will agree that it was necessary to drop the bombs. It is those people, the people who were in the thick of it whose words should be trusted.

    Hiroshima: 57 years

No offence Denoir.. but the dropping off the Atomic bomb was an absolute necessity. It has now been proven that Japan was only a month, maybe 6 weeks from developing their own nuclear weapon. Do you think, (with the way they treated POW's, Civilians, etc.) that they would have hessitated using it against innocent civilians in the Pacific Islands, Australia, and even eventually the United States? While I'm appalled at the level of destruction that some of these weapons have, I have no qualms about the use of the atomic bomb to end World War 2. It was not a "War Crime" as you put it. Since WW2, such weapons have been the main reason for sustained peace throughout most of the world. The threat of nuclear bombardment was just too great. Do you disagree with this forced peace as well?

    Question on american installation names

Fallon is used for training. Mirimar is used for Top Gun, and for Basic Air-Combat training. (According to a book "Bogeys and Bandits, the making of a fighter pilot")

    Rl: wars, survival..

Just like they have "Survival Ratios" for nuclear detonations. There are also Ratios for casualty rates of soldiers in standard combat. It is based upon information gathered from past conflicts, but as already stated, these ratios are completely useless, as there are hundreds of other factors to be taken into account in combat. Plus, if any of you were actually in combat, it would mean you would have had actual training, rather than one mission to get used to the keyboard layout you selected.

Best production assault rifle in the world?

Who needs assault rifles? Give me a nice YF-23 Strike Fighter and I'll be happy, even if it means I can't hit a single infantry man running from tree to tree.

    Thoughts about roleplaying games

Although I agree it would be nice to see some more roleplaying games set in modern times, the main problems I have with these so called RPG's is the linear nature of the gameplay. It doesn't matter if you are Chaotic Evil, or Lawful Good, you still have to complete the game the same way. SUre, there are some sub-plots and quests that allow you to be evil, but the main quest is the same. (Take the start of Never Winter Nights) You still have to get the Creatures back to cure the plague. Why? if you're evil, what would you care about some poor dying wretches. Then you have people who stand on the same street corner forever. Never going home or moving. ANd never buying anything from other people. And then, to top it all of, you have character classes that just shouldn't be involved in the main quests. Ie. What is an elven ranger going to be doing in a huge city? It is a racial trait of elves that they don't like leaving their own cities or getting involved in the troubles of the world at large. It is a character trait of Rangers to prefer the cover of the forests to large cities... shouldn't then, a character playing an elven ranger be doing quests centered around the forests, only occassionally venturing into the cities. And WHY CAN'T WE PLAY AS VAMPIRES? Who else thinks it would be cool to complete the game as a Vampire???

    Cockpit guns

Wouldn't it just be easier to equip each aircraft with a canister containing a quick acting gas designed to put people to sleep. When the terrorists try to take over the plane, the pilots simply pull masks over their faces, and press the button releasing the gas into the cabin. THen land at the closest airport while everyone sleeps happily in the back. Even if the terrorists realized what was happening, how much damage could happen 10 seconds that it takes for the gas to take effect completely??

    The undecided air-superiority debate

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote (Acidcrash @ June 27 2002,23:45)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">The stealth technology is already under question, for those of you in the UK and watch the news will remember a few years back that at the airshow in Farnbourough they detected the B2 Spirit on radar...thats an embaressment if i ever knew one...especially as it was a trade airshow. word has it the french also claim to be able to detect stealth...<span id='postcolor'> Was the B2 "At war" at the time they detected it on radar though? Stealth aircraft are not completely invisible 100% of the time. The pilot has to activate several components on the aircraft to make it go into full stealth mode... And, for full optimization of the stealth ability, the aircrafts flight has to be as flat and straight as possible. Any turns increases the radar signature of the aircraft. Watch the movie "Broken Arrow" for an example of this... very Hollywoodish movie, but it shows how they can disappear from radar quite easily when they need to.

    Aircraft

After a 2-second burst the gun needs about a minute to cool off.  Besides if you're shooting from 1 kilometer away it's not likely you will hit the target where you want despite Avenger's impressive accuracy.<span id='postcolor'> Where did you get that information from? In a book I have about Modern Military Aircraft, it has a picture of the A-10 "Warthog" firing its cannon. Gaseous vapour has almost completely obscured the aircraft.. with the caption reading "This is all that is visible of the A-10 after a continuous 5 second burst from its cannon under normal operating conditions" Certainly the term "Normal Operating Conditions" means there is a difference from combat operations, but still a 5 second burst is longer than 2 seconds... and what's more, in the picture the gun is still firing.
  16. Great mission.. of the standard I wish I could make.. One of the best I have played. On my first attempt I was killed by the M2 on the edge of the forest... I was hovering above and out towards the road, marked the camp... called in the artillery, one round at a time... and then suddenly noticed that the M2 wasn't firing... I moved closer, dipped lower... and that is when it opened up... one small burst. Straight into my pilot... down went the bird undamaged.

    Spam mail

I've had one that read something along the lines of "Hi, I've had a crush on you for....." It went on and on about how she'd really like to see me... and how she had done some modelling and would like me to see them because she feels I'm special... I forgot the exact line but it made the point of saying I was the only one who was going to be able to see them.... However, the extremely funny part was that in the CC section of the email was listed at least 100 other email accounts beginning with the same letter as mine... That was back in the days before the email filtering programs.. now they're deleted before even being read.

    What guns(?) are they carrying?

There was a picture in the paper the other month that had an unsual gun in it... it looked like the Stock and trigger assembly of an MP5, but the end of the barrel was as large as those 60mm mortars... At first glance I thought "Oh yeah MP5" then I caught sight of the barrel and weant "WTF?" anyone know what the hell it could have been?

    Army?

As a point of note, you may find it interesting that the Australian Defence Forces only have one English Spelling test in their entire recruiting process. It consists of ten words, written twice, once spelt correctly, once incorrectly. All you have to do is circle the correct spelling. That is the only spelling test, Period. Therefor it is quite possible that many people could be in the forces but still have terrible spelling or grammar.

    Soldier of fortune

Australian Officers get $33,000 a year after training. (Lowest Rank) with $394 uniform allowance a year, and $6866 Service allowance per year. Plus various other "Remote Locality" allowances, Flying allowances etc.

    Question for you gun experts!

It could be a G3, but it could also be one of the old Soviet made assault rifles. Your best bet would be to email the webmaster and ask them if they know what weapon it is.

We havn't even heard from the guy yet!<span id='postcolor'> We've heard a lot from his commanders. I live in Ottawa, I go to school 10 mins away from the Department of National Defense, and this is all our news papers are talking about. He was told twice by his commander not to fire, and he did anyways.<span id='postcolor'> But how many times over history has a low ranking officer been used as a scapegoat by senior officials just to cover their own backsides. In Australia alone I can think of several examples, the first that springs to mind being the Black Hawk crash, where 18 SAS soldiers died in a night operation. The Senior officers were all set to court marshall the Major who flew the number one helicopter, and who was one of the only (two??) pilots who survived. The only reason they backed down from their statements that the crash was "His fault" and not caused by the NVG's they were wearing, and other problems, was that almost two dozen other officers threatened to quit if they went ahead.
