evilnate replied to Placebo's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
I'm wondering if my 192 proc cores on my GTX 260 will give me ultra high settings and no less than 60FPS when combined with a i7920 @ 3.2Ghz. If not I was considering buying another 260 instead of ditching it and getting a GTX285. Thoughts? -

Does anyone know if BI confirmed SLI/crossfire support? If so, can a source be provided? I would like to upgrade before I get A2. -
Rock, thanks for spending time answering everyone's questions and concerns. I've never been a huge fan of a RTE, I find the 2D editor more productive. Did you get a chance to place some entities in the editor and click preview? Have the loading/previewing times decreased or increased? Given the new meter-to-centimeter accuracy improvements, have you noticed and improvement if accuracy of placed 2D icons/objects in the editor (eg. A rectangular 3D object has a perfectly squared icon in 2D editor, causing mission editor to offset 2D icon for best placement.)?

I think that too much press emphasis is focused on the game play compared to other FPS. I've never read press coverage that goes in depth to show how cool and important the built in mission editor is. I can't think of any game that offers as powerful tool as this game does. If they did and were able to quantify it in a way everyone can understand quickly, I think the game would sell many more copies. -
Air combat in ArmA2 [creators' input welcome]
evilnate replied to axure's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
They attack each other. They would fly around trying to lock on to each other, in the air. I don't know if the heat seeking is actually simulated, but they aren't limited to missiles. They have cannons too. They use the same "radar" technology as all other vehicles. There are some physics modeled, but not too much. An A-10 will take more runway to take off than say a AV-8 would. Those are my speculative answers based of ArmA 1. :D -

Wow, puddles that don't have tides!!! But I got to say... I'm quite disappointed with the way the rain effects don't interact with the standing water. If this were a true simulator, each drop of rain would cause little ripples in the water giving the player a true sense that he is in a real world. Well, time for BIS to go back to the drawing board. :D /sarcastic humor Seriously.. OMG that looks awesome! -
Appreciate the input. I too have lots of exp. building systems (since 1995) but I haven't been keeping up on the latest hardware. I think I've decided to go with the i7 920. The OEM version has the locked multipliers, but the retail version is like the EE (unlocked). If I didn't have money to burn I would most likely go for the AMD proc, but you never know when you'll need a CAD system (visitor, etc.). After more research it looks like the V8 is less superior to the thermalright Ultra 120. I've read lots of success clocking to 4Ghz with temps @ <70C. Thanks for all the suggestions and opinions, it really helped me. See you guys in Chernarus. :D

Research Research Research Even more research I did some research before I made my post and it seems that if you can afford it, the i7 is the better performer currently. I don't plan on clocking higher than 3.6Ghz so I won't have to worry about hitting that wall. :) My last system I bought 2 X1900 cards and the expensive mobo (P5B) to support it. I was totally disappointed with the results and swore that I would never do the crossfire thing again (mostly because arma didn't support it and it's the main game I play). You're right it's the P6T and I know who the mfg. is :) For some reason I just couldn't remember the numeric. Thanks for the advice. What is the improvement over onboard output? Sound quality? Better gaming performance? I'll check the prices, again thanks for the advice. Yeah i'm still in the process of researching, and thanks to you guys i'm learning even more. Price isn't too much of a factor for me so I don't mind buying the better performer (i7). I was thinking about waiting for Intel's 35nm process to come out but I've put off upgrading for a while now and I have to pull the trigger sometime. RE: 4890's If waiting wasn't a option, and I was mad, what card would you recommend? I want fancy headphones since I live in a apartment. Would a fancy headphone compliment the fancy sound cards? Asking you guys for your advice and opinions is part of my research, and I appreciate it very much. Thank you. :) Very interesting. I wouldn't want to make that kind of mistake. I'll talk to "the guy" at my local computer shop and ask him when he expects the next-gen cards to come out. I was wondering that myself. Maybe some people are true enthusiasts who can afford these lifestyles of the rich and famous. :icon_lol: Again, what about finest headphones around? I seriously appreciate your opinions, keep em coming. :D

The very first coop mission I ever made for arma had civilian death penalties. The cool thing about the arma series is that you can do almost anything you want without a programing degree.

Howdy, I'm preparing to build a new system for arma 2. Here's my plans... CPU - Intel i7 920 I want to overclock this with air cooling. I've done a fair amount of research/learning and it looks like I should be able to clock a retail version to atleast 3.2Ghz and possibly 3.6. I'm planning to get the best air cooler on the market (coolermaster V8). Does anyone on these boards have any exp. overclocking these? I could spend the mula to get the stock 3.2Ghz EE, but if I can save here it can go towards the VGA. VGA - Not sure, whatever the best card on the market is. Looking for your opinions. I would say that I don't want to spend >$600 RAM - Not sure either, money is no object for this component. MOBO - Considering the ASUS P4T (or whatever the i7 mobo is) Sound Card - Need help here. For years I've been buying the usual $40 creative sound cards and their ok. I searched newegg and found some that cost ~$200. Does anyone know if the price delta is worth it? Anyone have any super sound cards? HDD's - Most likely going to buy a pair of 300GB velociraptors. Many years ago I bought 2 74GB raptors and had them striped, I still have them and don't have any complaints. Is there a better/faster configuration? SSD's? Thanks for your opinions. :)

I think your right, and the tactic$ would prevail for sure if it supported english in full. -
Regarding prone AT4 launching... I wasn't kidding, just ignorant. Thanks for the info. :p

One Question I don't understand about Bipods...

Oops you accidentally clicked arma 2 instead of arma. It's possible that everyone was talking about the ACE mod feature where you can rest your muzzle on objects. -

Yeah partly my bad, I asked about it trying to steer the other conversation from another off-topic (yet interesting) subject to something about press coverage. Speaking of which, I don't remember seeing THIS release date announcement here yet so I guess we're we're back on topic now. :D -
@Meuhey Once you get a little bit experienced with the editor and script implementation you can use scripts that dynamically add populous to the map. It's possible that the out-of-the-box campaign will have what your looking for, but if it's not there it's very possible for this to be made. In OFP someone made a SP mission called "forgotten solders", same principal. in ArmA I made a few COOP missions that have civilian, domestic security, and national security forces occupying and patrolling all over south sahrani.

Destroying a dam would probably cause too much collateral damage for NATO to target. Most hydroelectric dams have a sub station, which if destroyed would cause damage to the enemies infrastructure. Just blow up the transformers. :) On topic: I haven't seen anymore footage or coverage about trains, does anyone have any information about this? Did BIS confirm? -
Zing!!! :icon_lol: Sorry, couldn't resist.

Regarding taking too long to do stuff... If you can, get an assault rifle and see how fast you can exchange an empty magazine. Not just having a magazine on a table in front of you, but one that is tucked in a pouch on your clothing. Then go back to arma and see if your still faster. As for firing an AT4 from the prone position, I don't think it would be a safe idea. I'm pretty sure modern military forces train to fire from kneeling positions. I feel you about not being able to move with binocs. Regarding gameplay... There are lots of complaints about the "game play" and aiming ever since OFP. When I play with people and the talk about this I ask them to go into their control options and turn "cursor floating" slider down to nothing. If you haven't tried this before, I highly recommend it. /my 2c

Welcome to the forums Thomas. In the future, you might want to search/scan existing threads before starting a new one to ask questions. Everyone does. :) Most of the previews are done by euro gaming organizations. Deadfast was kind enough to translate many of these to english and are available here. Because BIS hasn't found a publisher that can do this. If it's too hard finding the game on disk in a store, consider downloading a digital copy (you can burn it to a disk after downloading).

I'm sure that if someone could include that feature and polish it with a game as grand as arma 2, they would. No doubt that it would create even more sales. Who's to say that this can't be done as a mod? What would be done if the next Albert Einstein happens to enjoy programing modern military simulations? If it's your dream make it happen!
