    Shove the view distance down a bit (I tend to use around 800-1200m, put the view quality down a bit (no lower than 3/4 or it starts to look horrible, and you don't really get a change in frame rate).. Screen resloution seems to have no effect on frame rate (I tried running the Battlefeilds mission at 480xsomething screen resloution, and got nearly the same frame-rate as at 1204x786..) The two biggest jumps in OFP speed I got was from, 1, getting a ATI Raedon 9550 (Basicly same as 9600) from a Geforce FX5600 (Not a huge jump, but the card was fecking cheap, and most games run far smoother, a better card would have been held back by the rest of my PC really..), and going from 512mb RAM to 1GB.. Theres no real set way to "make OFP less laggy", or "tweak frame rate" like in moredn games, as OFP was designed to be ridicously scalable (Look at the min system requirements, and look the game on a high-end computer now, even still you can't run it at maxed settings..) It's largely down to the mission.. I think this FRAPs benchmark thing (From a CTI mission online) sums it up : - Ben {Edit : Computer specs/info : P4 2.8GHz, 1GB RAM, ATI Raedon 9550, 120GB 7500rpm primary drive, then two other harddrives, tend to play with MSN, uTorrent, Juice podcast downloader, DU Meter, Avast, Sygate Firewall.. Only "normal" program I tend to close is Firefox as it tends to use 100mb of ram )

    ARMED ASSAULT GONNA BE CRAP?

    It seems better than in OFP (The two outside crosshair-y bits move to show how inaccurate your shot will be, couldn't really see the middle bit on any of the videos) I'd imagine there will be more empasis of anti-cheat than in OFP, as OFP was more designed as a single player game, with MP added afterwards.. I would have hoped, if your still playing OFP, you could look beyond the graphics.. Could rant on for ages, but, erm, I've lost my ranting hat Err, if you like OFP, but ArmA.. The way I'm looking at it isn't as a sequel to OFP, not even as a new game.. Just what OFP would be like if I bought a Å3000 computer (Faster, shinier, and has the added improvements of the new features, less clipping problems etc), but it only costs Å30.. As long as the game is more efficiant (I.e can have more units on the map, and have a higher FPS on more recent hardware, and better netcode), I'll be happy.. - Ben

Few rant-ish, constructive-critisism-ish points : I think using Combustion for the tutorial was a bad idea, it's completely overkill for this, Paint would have done just as good a job Paint Shop Pro/Photoshop would be a far better bet (also a lot cheaper if I recall properly, isn't Combustion sold for Å2000~ ), as you would have stuff like burn, brushes, noise, more blur options etc (Only played around with Combustion for an hour or two, and disliked how it worked, so can't really say of those things were in it) Also, you missed the bit that I found hard when playing around with island making, which was placing objects (buildings and fences and the likes..), same with acctualy getting the thing in-game (Even if you just provided a sample config, and a paragraph on what to change, and how to PBO it), also possibly missed is sorting terrain height, since the terrain will start at 0 height, where it should be under water (I can't remeber how it works, the water may start higher up, can't remeber to be honest) It's a good start, but seems kinda incomplete? Still, it's one of the few island creation tutorials I've seen, and is something that's really needed - Ben

    To do that, type root@server$ cd /home/ofp (Assuming /home/ofp is where you copied the OFP folder contents) root@server$ ./tolower (It should say something like) 104 files converted Other thing to remeber is the server needs all the addons to be installed on the server (as well as on the players computer), but I'd assume it'd give obvious error messages for that - Ben

    character switching

    I'm completely happy with character switching.. Sure, it's unrealistic (ON that subject, one of the "realism complaints" on the OFP.info post on the ArmA E3 video was being able to eject from helis... But if I wanstn't able to eject from a heli in OFP, it would be exxtreeemmly annoying, it's good ArmA isn't "breaking" things like this, espically for backwards compatibilty with missions.. Anyway) There is something people are seemingly missing with the character switching.. Since it isn'nt forced upon you at certain points of the missions (Like in some games, you play though point a to b as Mr A, then at point B, you play as Mr Z.. And if you play the mission again, you play the same people at the same places).. Soo.. You could replay the entire compain many many times.. (For example) once as the normal character you start with, then you could reload the mission, switch to the tank, play it as that, reload and switch the heli.. Surely thats a good thing, no? - Ben {Edit, spaced it out a bit to make it look less like a solid sentence }

    Cant host MP

    The error doesn't mean much to me.. But the bit I can work out, intro (desert island) could posssisibly be curroupt, or tried to be replaced by two mods (shouldn't be the problem) or something.. Maybe try it just one mod, then the other, see if either of them are causing the error.. If it still does the same thing with both (or neither) of the mods, copy the intro.wrp files of the CD/get a friend to send them.. And I assume you've tried a few times and it's crashed all the time, and it's not just a one off error..? If all that fails, reinstalling should fix it.. But most likely just a conflict between the two mods - Ben

    Longest game online?

    Ye, just finished playing CTI with Mr Codarl, which lasted around 3-4 hours, which seemed fairly short (Mainly because the AI done really badly that time ) D.murphy man : If you sort that Gurilla Tactics mission out, I wouldn't mind having a look at it. Anyone interested : I got bored (and part to experiment setting the OFP dedicated server up on linux) and set the OFP dedi-server up on my laptop. Just need to copy the OFP folder across (Can't copy it of the CD's since it's only at v1.46, and the updater wont run obviously). I'd be happy to host "the longest game online" if people are interested I think the best day for it is Saturday, so it could go over onto Sunday if needed, and most people don't have school/work over the weekends (And if your like me, on monday either.. or Friday most weeks.. ) - Ben

    Plus it's always good to have a reason for lying down randomly.. The taking-pictures-from-low-down thing applies to anything really, the lower you go (obviously) thigns will look bigger in comparison, eqully, taking pictures from high up makes things look smaller, and it can make a fairly dull picture seem more interesting in quite a lot of cases.     I want it possible, but not implimented, if that makes sense.. It has many uses for certain addons/mods/missions, but I don't think it'd work in the ArmA campaign.. - Ben

    Why hasn't a decent ghille suit been made in a game yet.. Surely with all the shiney farbic phsyics a game or two would have tried by now.. Suppose not many games really need a ghille suit as anything more than a gimmic (I remeber DF2 had one, that didn't seem to do anything.. ) - Ben

    Arma Particle FX Example

    Any chance of mirroring those images to imageshack/photobucket, it's extremely annoying have to copy/paste them into new tabs, so much so I looked at one and gave up Anyway.. (Then again some of the other effects, like in the video where the units are getting out the heli, the dust particles look far far better) I think OFPs particle system, despite eating frame-rate a lot of the time, was good.. Good example, the FDF mod's dead-tank smoke plumes, which look great, even when flying though it.. Hm, slightly unconstructive post, but njeh - Ben

    I'm assuming it's a macro lens, though you should be able to get half-decent macro shots with any cameras macro-mode with a bit of practice, and either a tripod, or bright-lighting (to get rid of camera shake) That second shot is nice, would have been good if you cropped the bits of trees out though - Ben

    VBS1 has the same hideous get-in anim OFP has To get in the gunner position, I assume (nearly certain) the same animations are used.. Doesn't mean movoing in vehicles has/can't be/isn't going to be included - Ben

    Hmm.. Nothings been said about moving in vehicles, but VBS1 had (or was going to have) a patch that allowed walking around in vehicles, putting other vehicles in etc (There was a video made of it, which made it look pretty good.. It's still on the VBS1 site somewhere I assume.. It was called enhanced.mpg I think) So.. If this was ever implimented in VBS1, there is a decent chance it'll make it's way into ArmA.. If it wasn't, there was obviously a reason it hasn't been put in.. But, since there was a video made of it working perfectly, given all the changes thats been made to the engine already, such a thing (espically if already coded) would be simple to put in.. Buut, nothing has been mentioned, but then again the ablity to shoot a gun hasn't been mentioned yet (okay so it miight have, but that is beyond my point) Possible? *Hopes so* - Ben

    Posted in here because it's made up from a bunch of random photos (Didn't take any of them myself, their from the internet, and a magazine cover disc), which puts it out the category of Photography anyway, besides, it was intended to look graphics (Since I really need to practice doing that sort of thing in PS) I've no idea what I'm trying to make, I just started messing around with a few pictures, and this emerged.. I fell like making that tree get set on fire (In the rain, thus the "Strange Weather" title) - Ben

    I have the basis for a MILES system implimented, with : AK47, PKM, M4, M249, all MILE-ified, even a presentation slideshow that works in game (Got bored one day and wanted to see if such a thing was possible ) Even a semi (badly) textured breifing room.. The thing that buggered up was OFP not registering eventhandlers with weak-bullets As for the muppet-hostages, nhoo, we tried that before, remeber.. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b392/mr_dbr/dxdshot1117827339.jpg Anyway, a Paintball/MILEs mod would work quite well (mainly for squad training thingys), airsoft just wouldn't work in a game, but either of the other two would, and are possible in a game..     If around 6 or 7 people want to play (hosted around that many people with a slower connection, on server-and-play, so shouldn't be a problem..), I could easily enough set up the dedicated server, and I'd be happy to play As for making it the "longest OFP game", with the wonderfullness of broadband anyone who wanted oculd leave their computer over night, and continue playing the next day.. If it comes to that chances are it's one of the longer games already, but might as well make it a hard time to beat If your fiddling with that Gurrila tactics mission, my advice is to remove as much unnesseriary units/vehicles/scripts as possible.. Though incomparison to things like CTI, it should be fairly light - Ben

    Biggest problem with long games like that is (basicly) stability, and if someone crashes, or their connection dies, their screwed for getting back in the game (One huge thing I'm looking forward to in ArmA, JiP) An interesting idea though.. I'd be happy to host something like this (Could setup a spare PC as a dedicated server), but my upload speed limits me hosting to around 5 people without it lagging.. - Ben

    Not sure if this has been linked to yet, but.. http://titaniumtorrents.com/ has torrents of (mostly) high-def trailers of some of the trailers showed. Some are good, some aren't the best (The MGS4 video camera was bad.. Autofocus isn't always a good thing..) - Ben
  24. *Hugs crapsky* Trying to see how possible close-ups were possible.. Not brilliantly.. Maybe on objects that are just a plane with alpha channels, but still not prefect.. Small story behind this : I was driving along, the gunner got killed, fell off, I drove as fast as I could to cover, but just before I reached a small house/wall, my teammate got killed. I jamp out, shot a few guys, ran back the vehicle, drove to the next village, etc, about 30minutes later the guy was still in my Jeep Okay not a very good story, it seemed more.. meaningfull in the game Finaly, Gand going down with the ship- I mean car Note : These were all taken at settings set to be playable, on my not-the-shinest-computer. So forgive the quality of the game graphics, and look past the fact their not taken on a Å3000 computer - Ben
