Need help troubleshooting my system.
desertfox replied to kissdznuts's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
I think this isn't a hardware/driver caused issue. It's a flaw in the engine, and has got to do with non-present LOD blending for the trees. At least I read in the interview that this is one of the issues being adressed in the next patch. On a sidenote I can not get rid of the feeling that 99 of the 100 people with uber-high-end systems who posted in the troubleshoot section just want to show off .. I mean most of the threads read like .. "Hey I'm the IBM system admin for the BlueGene computer, and I get 20.000 FPS in basically all aspects of the game, but when I look at the traffic sign in that small village right south of you know where, my mouse stops for five seconds .. please help." Maybe it's just me though ^.^ -
Okay that's creepy. I had the same thing yesterday with all 2D overlays .. but while running full-screen on a CRT. All the menus looked blurry - I especially noticed it when the loading screens showed up, with the Arma logo on the lower left. It looked like washed out. It's gone again now though.. and I have no idea what caused it. Another thought on the problem with the windowed mode blurriness .. I thought about something to the effect of different settings in the gfx card control panel for 2D and 3D enhancements. Not sure about the nVidia cards, but the ATi control center offers different settings for Desktop and Fullscreen applications. Maybe one's set to application controlled while the other one ain't ? Worth checking it out maybe.

Erm .. I might be wrong but I figure the guys who encounter problems in windowed mode are using TFT's ? EDIT: On a second thought it might also have got something to do with Cleartype font smoothing ..

You will never have as much power in a notebook than you can have in a workstation. Mobility here mobility there - If you want a decent gaming rig .. go figure .. get a desktop ! ^.^ If you deem it mandatory to play Arma at your workplace, on the bus stop, and at your girlfriends .. I recommend a Dell M90.

I couldn't agree more on that particular comment. Concerning the article - I can't wait until the patch is out. Sounds great. BIS is on the right course.

Poll to determine nr. of simultaneous 3D/2D sounds
desertfox replied to Dwarden's topic in ARMA - GENERAL
I think one point should be taken into concern here - No matter how many sounds you are able to generate through hardware or software means - the human brain is not able to keep them apart anymore after a certain number has been reached. It will start to melt into "noise" at some point. -
Next to most of the things mentioned already, I do love the sounds in particular. Playing Arma with a headset is mandatory to experience the sounds the right way. The distant "Clak clak clak" of AK's sound like the real thing to me. I also noticed that sound is being reflected from hills and stuff .. or at least it seemed like that. Awesome.

Personally I don't grasp why BIS is puttin so much weight to the animation argument. They can't seriously assume they sell more games with prettier animations ... Personally, as a 1st person player, I could not care less about the animation my player performs when I choose to throw a grenade. I agree that we should be able to throw a second nade before the first one detonates. If I want animations I watch a Tom & Jerry cartoon ...

What's the matter with people buying a game for less than 40 ridiculous Euros and then braggin' about how they want to turn it in and get an English version for it ... get a clue will you ? You don't really think that the Czech and German publishers are going to give you a refund so you can give the money to a different publisher ... this is the most ludricous demand that has ever come to my ears. Seriously. -Bangs head on desk-

Pointless. Especially because 3rd person view can be disabled server-side.

To the people who are playing ArmA, how is it?
desertfox replied to evilnate's topic in ARMA - GENERAL
I've spent half of this weekend playing Arma on various servers. All I can say is the game rocks. And with the number of quality maps increasing day by day, and with the numerous fixes and improvements to come with the next patches .. I'm in love !! It's been a while since I've sat in a bush with my heart pounding and adrenaline rushing through my veins, while I was waiting for a T72 to pass my position. I'm impressed. This is OFP de luxe. Don't like the game ? Get the heck out of these forums ! There are a million games I utterly dislike, and it would never come to my mind to post on those games forums. I'd rather spend the time playing a game I like .. or spend the time posting constructively on a forum I want to show dedication towards .. I'd even regard cutting WLAN cable into pieces as more useful. -
Chipset drivers ... ?

Hardware Issues: Tips/Tricks/Solutions
desertfox replied to Jack-UK's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
For all the people who have at least two harddrives - I recommend you create a 1GB partition for the windows pagefile on a drive other than C: ( Or wherever Windows is located on your PC ) HERE is a Microsoft Knowledgebase article. -
Haha .. I so know what you mean.

There's something odd that comes to my mind just now. I installed ArmA on a freshly installed Windows system, with all drivers up-to-date and no other software on it. ( Due to a HD failure the day before ) and I really was pleased with the framerates I got on medium to high settings. We're talking about an average of 30 fps @ 1280x1024 pixels resolution. So the other day I see that ATI has released a driver update on December 17th, and I go and download it .. the full Catalyst control thingy. And my framerates dropped down to 6-8 !! in MP missions. I could only get the performance up again after removing ALL ATI drivers with the uninstall utility from them - and installing the actual "drivers only" ( Without the shitty control center thang ) again. So if nothing helps, did some of the guys who experience massive lag try to re-install windows from the scratch ?

Frankly .. you can not seriously tell me that someone who does not know what OS he is running, can tell the difference between guest and admin account lol Okay to be of a little help here: How to log on with the Administrator account All Windows XP computers have a special user account named Administrator (some computer manufacturers might rename it). To log on with the Administrator account so that you can install software or change computer settings ///// If you are currently logged on to your computer, click Start, and then click Log Off. When prompted, click Switch User. ///// On the Welcome screen, press CTRL+ALT+DEL on your keyboard by holding down both the CTRL and ALT keys and then pressing DELETE. ///// The Log On to Windows dialog box appears. In the User name box, type Administrator In the Password box, type your Administrator password, if you created one during Windows XP setup. If you have not assigned a password, or you do not know your password, leave the Password box blank. Click OK. Windows XP logs you on using the Administrator account. You should use the Administrator account only when installing software or changing computer settings. When you are browsing the Web, reading e-mail, or performing other day-to-day computer tasks, you should be logged on using a limited account. For more information, read Set up user accounts and log on to your computer. Alternatively you can try to start up windows in safe mode and try to install the patch.

Concerning the roof: You can adjust your view by pressing freelook - tilting your head up or down - and locking freelook again. Concerning the 'sitting too much left' thing - uh not really a biggy. I can drive just fine. There's a gazillion other issues regarding the views/positions in several vehicles as of now which bug me more. ( e.g. the insufficient driver view in the Stryker as mentioned in another thread ) Additionally, I think the cockpit textures ( especially instruments ) of some vehicles are quite neat, while others plainly suck balls. I hope the un-cough-finished ones will be improved one day.
-
I don't get the image you posted. What's 'good' or 'bad' ? I mean as long as you're not in the UK where the steers are on the wrong side of the cockpit, the driver is just positioned fine as it is ? lol

Makes me think of OFP almost 6 years back now. If I remember correctly I had an AMD 333 at this time. Then I bought a Pentium III with 700 MHz .. and only after buying an C-Athlon with 1.4 GHz, I was able to run it with max settings and awesome framerates. Of course the gfx card generations improved as well with the CPU's. All I wanna say is: BIS made, as Jack pointed out correctly, once more a game which is 2-3 years ahead of its time. You will see .. the PC's in 2-3 years will have no problem whatsoever dealing with Arma. And the game will still rock, and all that will be left of games like BF2 then, will be a scratched DVD in a dusty shelf. ^.^

Excuse me, but I find it hard to believe that you logged in as administrator, but don't know if your WXP is 32 or 64 bit. That sounds .. fishy ? lol
-
No need for an SP demo. Arma is an online game. As mentioned before, when you want to play alone, just make your own server and play alone. For me as paying customer, I would not want BIS to waste resources on a SP demo while people can just play the MP to get an impression of the game.
