Das Boot and Stalingrad are the most gritty and realistic war movies so far, no question.... Oh, and Bravo Two Zero: I know Chris Ryan (anyone heard of him? ) and he reckons that Andy McNab developed this grudge against him after the war, because Chris got away and he didn't. His book and the film based on the book is an INACCURATE depiction of what happened because it is from his biased viewpoint, and, since he didn't get away, I'm more inclined to believe Chris' version of events. Now all of the above is just my opinion, your welcome to hail it as "the best" "most realistic" etc but frankly, I couldn't give a toss, my dear. Black Hawk Down is based on a book by Mark Bowden, I book I have read and think it is the best book description of a b@lls-out firefight I have ever read. If the film-makers stick to the book, its a classic in the making...

Black Hawk Down will be the first film to 100% accurately depict fire-fights and bullet-damage. Why? because it is a true story of something that happened in 1993, so most of the guys are still alive and helped with the film as advisors. Directed by Ridley Scott (yaaaaaaaaay!!!!) This is, hands down the best island I've downloaded. (The others I have so far are Nature Kolgujev, Snow Everon, and the Training Island ) Haven't got Kegety's Winter Islands yet, are they any good? DamageInc has made a good point (maybe without knowing it) I'm in the Irish Army Ranger Wing (ARW), and we NEVER, EVER use tracer rounds, because we believe it is more advatageous to the enemy rather then us, because it allows them to find where we are shooting from (duh). However, when I was in the regulars, (for 2 + 1/2 yrs) we used tracer rnds all d time, mainly one tracer every 3 or 5 bullets, depending on whether the weapon had a "Burst" mode or only "Auto". The tracers DO suck though, they should wobble the further they fly.

Thats right Soon2B 2ndLT. I'm worried that Jerry Bruckheimer is producing it. He doesn't have a record of historical knowledge in films: In particular - Pearl Harbor. Which was also crap. However, Ridley Scott is directing, and I happen to like him, and think he was a good choice. Top Gun was the first film of his I saw, and I loved it. (Although, again, not very realistic) It remains THE best book I have ever read in its depiction of soldiers under fire. I have never been in a firefight myself (despite having been in the Army Ranger Wing for almost 4 years now), but it describes the confusion very well. My OFP squad, the ARW (armyrangerwing) is dedicated to those 18 who died in the Mog. *PS: You've been "Soon2B 2nd LT" for a while now, is your promotion ever going to actually happen?

I have to admit that I couldn't remember what the heli's used in that op were, so i just said the black hawk.... Also, I know that the JCS and other "Brass" needed a scapegoat to blame for the Delta and AirForce casualities, so they conveniently pointed the universal finger at Beckwirth. It is my belief that Col. Beckwirth did not have a choice: He HAD to abort the op. There was no way he could go in with half his force. Oh, and i went to the link u posted, and believe it or not, that is INCREDIBLY incorrect misinformation on that site. But I will say this; I said "fact" merely to emphasise the "fact" that I have experience with these guys, both socially and 'when it counts', so I think (perhaps incorrectly) that I should know a little more than Joe Bloggs about who are the real ELITE. Yes, 1980. I know all about this so i'll break it down for you. 1) Carter tells Joint Chiefs he will militarily sieze the hostages 2) Newly formed Delta Force say they are specially trained for this type of conflict *THIS IS WHERE THE s**t HITS THE FAN* but do not have a specific branch (Like today 190th SOAR Nightstalkers) to airlift them to the area. 3) So the USMC volunteer their UH-60s. 4) USAF gets snotty that they haven't been offered the job, and insist that they be involved. So what happened? 1) ONE Air Force C-130 Hercules was to fly the "Gound Assault Group" halfway to the area and land in a secure spot in the Persian Desert. 2) Also SIX Marine UH60's (with USAF pilots as part of the *deal*), would fly in the "Abseiling Troop" and rendezvous with the C-130, and the GREEN or ABORT would be given at this stage. 3) The C130 men would drive towards the target, while the UH60 troops abseiled down onto it. This would cause maximum confusion within Iranian ranks. 4)ALL the troops would then pile into the Black Hawks and EVAC. That was the plan. Unfortunately: 1)THREE BlackHawks aborted when they ran into a dust storm. 2)This meant that the Commander would have to 1/2 his force, because they now did not have room for all the Hostages AND C130 troops when EVAC took place. 3)The commander decided this was NOT good enough, gave the ABORT, and everyone piled into the machines to take off. *THIS IS THE SADDEST BIT:(* 4)Because the USAF pilots weren't as well trained (no offence) as their Marine counterparts, while attempting take-off, one off the BlackHawks got disoriented in the dust cloud its rotors had thrown up, drifted sideways, and collided with the stationary C130. All the men and crew of the UH60 were killed, and only those Delta Operators at the back of the C130 got out in time. This *unfortunate* event caused a rethink in the Military's attitude towards Special Ops. Now, ONLY the specially trained are allowed take part in intrinsic ops like the above.

Since our country is neutral (there is a big split in Ireland over whether we should be), we have never used our troops, SF or otherwise, in OFFENSIVE nature. However, being members of the UN (and at the time of writing, Chairmen of the Security Council) we often deploy troops on peacekeeping or DEFENSIVE duties. This does not mean we don't get involved in "fights" as you call them. Last one? Not authorised to tell you. Last one i am allowed to tell you about? East Timor 1999. Officially, very quiet operation involving us, the Aussie SAS and the South African SF. No casualties, *officially* no skirmish contact of any kind. Unofficially? I'm sorry, but that information is classified unless my superiors tell me otherwise....

Used it when training with British units. The Paras use it mostly, cos of its trade of accuracy for maneuvrability, nobody in their right mind would go into battle with one unless, like British Airborne, there is no other option. SAS don't tho, (although that's obvious). The RMC do when they have to, although i was still surprised when i watched the News from Afghanistan which had pictures of a few of them with the SA-80. Poor bastards I find the Steyr Aug more accurate then most, FCATrooper, my problem with it is that it's not comfortable (personal preference:) and that the rate of fire is too slow for my likin. In Timor, the Company Sergeant said that if we got into a contact, we'd just lob a few grenades and scarper without even FIRING the Steyr!!! Dunno about the Famas. Jury's Out on that one.
