Knives would be worthless. Name one ingame moment that a kinfe would be more useful than an MP5. Its silent too, and it fires faster, and most likely hurts more. Tex is right though, knives would only be used by losers camping spawning areas in MP. Theres no PRACTICAL use for them ingame, except for a very small, very unimportant role which is better filled by SMG's and pistols.
