Why is this game not more popular?

And how exactly is performance not relevant to the popularily of the game? I'd say that's more than a bit relevant. But look, I think you made your point a while ago... In a word, No. which may also be a bit relevant..

Except that's exactly the purpose of this thread...
  3. Even the handgun can stop you from turning around in many places where you definitely ought to be able to without issue. You can't even lower the handgun like you can with rifle. So would it kill you if the weapon was automatically lowered when facing a wall? I realise it may be technically difficult to program if still to let you shoot out windows and such, but in the end the fact is that indoor is far more clumsy than in the real world.

I don't see why that would stop You or anyone else from sharing their content - like on armaholic. If it's as great as you claim, it's sort of a shame that so few get to enjoy it, wouldn't you say?

Why is this game not more popular?

So am I getting you right that you want to avoid, you know, "that kind of player", but you play exclusively on a private server? And that there ARE great missions, they're just not available because you don't want to share? Please tell me I got you wrong, because otherwise I'm not sure I can take you completely seriously. But hey, if it's coop, I'd love to play your missions regardlessly. It is a reason. And yes there especially many interesting SP missions and even campaigns and such.. but that doesn't change the fact that you can play through all of that in under a month or 2. And most players don't bother with unofficial stuff.

No, I don't think they will. Well a few might, but they won't make any real impact. Not without another product. First impressions are everything you know. The only thing that can revive a franchise is the next product and the publicity created with it. ...or a mod of counterstrike-like proportions... I think the reasons why people quit arma are really much simpler: A. They weren't actually as interested in the game in the first place. B. They ran out of content and got bored. Arma features no addictive achievements systems to keep people coming back. And the mods tend to add a lot of stuff, but little or no content. The content (ie missions) that is released takes effort and knowledge to install and use and there is no guarantee of quality... And it's virtually all mediocre quality. People may watch user made rubbish on youtube all day long, but only as long as there's no effort required. The (public) multiplayer population is small for several reasons besides the above: hard, slow, high fear of death (eg long wait and travel times), mod hell, hacker hell, non-standardization, barely any official content, demands teamplay to be enjoyable while rewarding soloing, unremarkable content, and stuff like that. So if you want the player numbers to grow you need to look at the bigger picture and realise that bugs is but a small part of it. There are many things that I would suggest are key to success, but they could pretty much all be summed up into these three words: Polish, polish, polish. The impressive bits are in the details. BIS please take notes ;)
  7. I just upgraded to win7 pro-64bit and so had to reinstall, well, everything, blergh! ;) and got errors with dubbing.pbo when patching from dvd 1.01 to 1.05. Second attempt I went 1.01->1.03->1.04->1.05 And this was successful. Prior I deleted the installation files (backup the missions/user addons) and I also freed up a bit more space on the drive - thinking fragmented files can suck. I don't know if the old patches are available anywhere, and I don't know if any of this actually helps or if it's just luck. but it's a great game so don't give up :)

    Buying a new Key code?

Alternative: Make your mum buy a new one.

    What do you guys do?..

Coop. In my opinion it's what the game really excels at. Not public servers mind you - get a few friends together or try joining a group or two. Lots of great coop missions on armaholic.com
  10. It's easy to criticize arma as it has a horde of problems that turn people away from arma MP.. ie the same problems that turn people away from arma SP - compounded. So maybe a more interesting question is, how exactly would you boost interest for MP in arma?

I want to support BI even more

I don't think we've heard anything about how they're doing since arma2 came out? ie how many copies sold or finances or similar. But in general, no news is good news -- if BIS isn't doing well they certainly should say so.

One thing that really bothers me

Controversy is probably great for business actually. Anyway, I'm sure china, europe, pakistan, iran and many others could field a fight... even if it would not be 1:1 in strength. Does it even matter that greatly if the game features a major power or not?Anyone with tanks and planes can be a viable foe... even a fictional one like in arma 1. I honestly don't care what factions we get or have, just sayin'..
  13. sorry I thought you meant audio - ie BLUFOR only spoke russian or so.
  14. I don't like localization, but as long as there are subtitles I do tend to prefer games and movies in the original language - regardless of whether I understand it or not. Danish localization is usually horrible. I wanted to kick myself for buying a starcraft copy with a danish box and manual... Thankfully the game was in english but still. I personally hope that localization of media outside of books and childrens media and such is a dying tradition. In my opinion it has hampered europeans ability to learn english which is a real shame. The ability to communicate outweighs the potential cultural losses. Of course if you use a different alphabet you're disadvantaged... There's just no easy answer. but er, sorry OT. As for not being able to switch, I suppose it might be because of the extra disc space needed. Just a guess though.
  15. Scripts are meant to be used where circumstances changes often so you don't need to recompile. The steerable parachute must be one of the best example of inefficient scripting implementation. Clearly such a thing ought to be hardcoded.. into.. every.. parachute. (where applicable) There's no way you can possibly polish that thing in a script. It feels like a hack. And it probably is. I love arma2 and it's miles ahead of everything else, but most of what arma2 has that is good is hardcoded. The modules and such... leaves a lot to be desired. The medic/carrying system especially is really cool, but oh so unreliable.

    Unit expansions

I doubt very much that units/vehicles alone is a good business model. In fact I'm willing to bet that MS's expansions are mostly just for advertisement of the main product which I suspect enjoys a very big share of the flightsim market. I believe OA will only pay off if it features a campaign (that's decent). And I say that as a neutral because I never cared about the campaigns, at all. But I believe the story lines are by far the biggest incentive to buy. Although I would also say that for it to gain the veteran's thumbs up, which may be very important, it also needs to feature a good proportioned island - like Resistance did - and not like QG. This is my view, for what it's worth, although all of it is conjecture I admit.

    Smaw > m136

I vouch for a changing the m136. I don't care if it becomes 1 shot disposable or if it stays reloadable, either way it really shouldn't consume half your inventory. Just my opinion of course.

    New patch 1.04

The rudders are... well... I don't know the terminology... auto-correcting? Is this meant to happen? ie if you roll left, the rudders will turn left too. and after using rudders in level flight it auto-correct by oscillating. I find this incredibly annoying.
  19. PuG's Pickup Group's; most commonly used in MMORPGs. Basically means a group that isn't formed by people you know; instead, it's formed up of random, possible noobs that will completely wreck whatever experience you are getting the group for. - urban dictionary But guess what, there's a whole forum section dedicated just to hookin up:http://forums.bistudio.com/forumdisplay.php?f=90 It takes a little effort but I reckon it's worth it. Alternatively, try stalking. ;) play as medic, people appreciate that. at least in coop.
  20. almost identical question yesterday regardless of how many addons you start arma with, an addon will only be required by a mission if you place the addon items in that mission. edit: although I don't know if certain mods, like soundmods, might add themselves.
  21. wamingo

    The ai is not stupid!

And players never run into the line of fire, no no never. ;)
  22. An addon is only required if you place the item of that addon in the mission.
  23. try a SWITCH type trigger sync'ed to the cycle waypoint.

    triggers

Read the part about Ending in briefing.html. copy the simple example. Change for instance End1 and End2 parts of it to your liking. trigger 1: size huge OPFOR - NOT Present cond: this on act: endmission "End1" trigger 2: cond: {!alive _x} count units my_group < 1 onact: endmission "End2" give your team init: my_group = group this that help?
  25. wamingo

    triggers

if you want the end mission screen to say stuff then you need a briefing.html.
