Cheers for the link Q. Can't seem to get this mod to work tho. Am i right in thinking i place the "PROPER_plants_standard_textures.pbo" file in Arma\@PROPER\Addons folder then just add @PROPER to my list of mods (In my case D:\ArmA\arma.exe -mod=DBE1;@CSM;@ArmAEffects;@Proper; -nosplash)? and do i do this along with the other two files (bisign and bikey)? i tried with and without to no avail. And what do these other two file types do? sorry for all the questions, i'm not so clued up on the modding world. the answer to my problems may lie in the fact that i couldn't lowplants to work either after my recent reinstallation of windows - which brought me to your mod. any help much appreciated.

Brilliant. cheers Q downloading now.

Hey William. I've started having trouble getting Vegetation fix and lowplants to work with my latest install. Is "PROPER_plants_standard_textures_with_lowplants" an addon? can't find it anywhere.
-
i totally agree with the suggestion of an official mod installer. i realise that installing mods is actually quite easy but remember that the majority of gamers don't want to be faffing about moving files and changing shortcut addresses etc. another area i'd like to see an improvement, tho i fear it's far too late, is with the 3rd person camera. It's an effect seen in GTA4 to a degree, tho maybe rather over done, whereby there's a small amount wobble. I know it doesn't sound like much but, for me, it'd give the game a far more organic feel. What prompted me to suggest it is the footage of the hind flying around the new arma2 map. Like the previous games the camera stays completely fixed in relation to the characters location and thus looks like a user controlled camera rotating around CG geometry in 3D computer space (which it is!. it should feel like we want it to feel: we're 100m up in the air, trailing an attack chopper at 90mph in a warzone! i realise the movement would potentially require more processing but it could easily be tweaked or switched off in the settings.

Nvidia 8800GT [or related] strange problems
the_bengine replied to ModaFlanker's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
cheers kklownboy. i had another couple of goes to try and get it to crash again but no luck...or loads of luck, depending on how you look at it. will lower the settings slightly if it happens again. it may well be that i just installed the 8800 without uninstalling the 7900 if drivers are an issue. -
Nvidia 8800GT [or related] strange problems
the_bengine replied to ModaFlanker's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Sorry to hijack this thread but it is a similar problem. I've just upgraded from a very stable 7900GTO to a 8800GTX and i was just flying around porto testing out the new settings when the game crashed in a way i've never seen before. it hung for a few seconds then started up again with strobing graphics. i was then presented with what looked like full screen images of the texture files, like the grass and the troops' skin and camo etc. it was really rather strange. i don't think it's over heating as i wasn't playing long and i am using the latest drivers. Has anyone experienced this and/or know of any drivers i can roll back to to try out? -
i too get the distinct impression that ps3 gamers would probably be better suited to a simulation like A2 than the average 360 gamer. i did, however, happen to read a quote in this month's Edge regarding tool development for PS3, something along the lines of "if you ask any inhouse or external dev team, they'll tell you that, like it's predecessor, the PS3 is a different beast to any other platform". I get the feeling that if BI are developing the game essentially to run alongside microsoft software, their choice of console is a foregone conclusion Â
-
perhaps somebody involved in games dev could confirm or offer their views but i would've thought it would make financial sense for BI to release ARMA2 on both consoles. i realise that code would have to be rewritten bringing with it new headaches for a relatively small company but all the graphical/basic coding resources are already in place and we've seen from GTA4 that both consoles can perform similarly when pushed (with the ps3 just pipping it...cough). surely the amount of work and money invested in porting the game over from, say, 360 to ps3 is worth the vast increase in potential market..?
-
Isn't the official Arma2.com site supposed to go online today? If you visit http://www.arma2.com/ it states that "FULL ARMA2.COM WEBSITE WILL LAUNCH SEPTEMBER 1ST!". if you click on the main image it takes you to BI's info site. Is that the official site, is it delayed or am i missing something?
-
wasn't complaining. just didn't know if the link to the BIS website WAS the arma2 site. anyway, the site's looking good guys. keep up the good work. i'll check back every couple of weeks.....
-
BBC news doesn't do the game much justice tho and it's a shame there's not a chance for BIS to plug the Arma series.

I've just been playing a couple of user missions by shark-attack and SPheonix and both of which employed the 'revive' feature whereby if you're shot, you can be revived by a team mate and one 'life' is used up. I have to say that this is a very welcome addition for me. All too often i'll be battling through a long mp mission with friends and one of the less experienced members of the group will get killed relatively early on. whereas we have no obligation to stop and restart to allow them to rejoin the game, it defeats the point of meeting up to play games together if the rest of us just continue without them. And while respawning addresses this issue to a degree, once you've respawned you have to make your way back to the battlefield on your own, out of formation and with no knowledge of the progress of events ruining the flow of the game. It happens all to often that i'll play an online mp game and give up when, once i've been shot, i'm planted the other side of the island with nothing but a jeep! the mission soon evolves into an orienteering trip lasting upto 30mins. and ofcourse, once you're back on the scene, the mission's been done or you get shot. Reviving allows the game to flow and i find i'm still as precious about my ingame life - afterall, it reflects badly if by the end of the mission you've lost '3 lives'. It did get me thinking tho. this may have to be a more permanent feature if arma 2 is going to see any success on the consoles. It's not too disimilar from Gears of War where the multiplayer game only ends if both players are killed, or if the 'down' player is not revived in time. I just think the ruthlessly swift deaths in arma are going to put a lot of people off, and probably already has. Ofcourse it would upset all those who play for the realism but that's nothing an extra option to switch it on or off couldn't fix.

this mod is great. now you can actually creep up on people for once. I was just sat in a bush and the enemy knew i was there but didn't know exactly where so they came right up to me. That would never happen before. it actually feels like some safety can be garnered from jumping into thick foliage. i was wondering tho: i've got the mod running with Kegety's lowplants so that the two run as one. For mp online games, am i able to just run the lowplants mod as a seperate mod folder without this one providing i set it up as such?

ho hum, solved my own problem...

Cheers Rejn. love the campaign, it oozes quality. i'm still on the 2nd mission after having played it for 1 - 1.5 hours as on both missions i'm left on my own to take out about 10 guys hidden in bushes! maybe a slightly fairer balance for the next installment? how are the voices coming along for the sequel? i'm happy to provide if you need any. i have my own audio studio and few bad european accents

Really? well what if all you had to do to use the feature was tick a box? what you have to remember is that a large number of users don't have any experience of coding or even know how to use mods so, without trawling these forums and bikipedia for hours, wouldn't be able to utilise it in their own games. Ofcourse they could go and find mp missions online but, compared to other games updates/mods, especially on the consoles, this is once again a relatively time consuming, and sometimes fruitless, affair. After hearing so many bad reports of Battlefield 2 on these forums despite it's massive sales figures i decided to make my own mind up and download the demo. What struck me was the ease at which you're dropped into the game - the accessability (e.g the command system which becomes 2nd nature after 2 minutes). The game is mildly fun for a quick blast but nothing more. I've spent many games' sessions with friends trying to get them into Arma and each time the story's the same. They love it as long as i'm there setting up missions, dishing out orders, getting the good mods and doing all the complicated stuff. As soon as i leave them to their own devices they go off and play other easier to access, more intuitive games. The way i see it, OFP and Arma are THE best games i've played, not perfect, but no game is. Convincing my friends that i'm right it proving difficult. Arma just takes too long to get into and my post is just one suggestion to increase the accessibility that the series so desperately needs.
-
Ok well i guess my point is that is SHOULD be a standard feature to bridge the gap between the die-hard fans and the casual gamers.

Just had a quick play through of Call of Duty and it's great! Nice sense of atmosphere - climbing the hill in the fog. i really quite liked the 'revive' idea - if you mess up you don't always have to start from square one again. I didn't seem to be able to keep the M113 alive very long tho. Both times i thought i'd cleared all the mines and it was still destroyed! maybe there are some hidden ones..... cheers SPheonix

Cheers SPheonix have downloaded and will have a go after work today. keep up the good work

Modern Combat Mod - SLX Released
the_bengine replied to Big-Rooney's topic in ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
hmm, not sure about the slums noise. but i reverted back to version 1.01 coz the 1.02 walking sounds were doing my head in. i don't know what's changed but in 1.02 the sound just goes up in tempo/pitch when you speed up which sounds really quite odd. was enough to make me switch back. this isn't a complaint as i appreciate all the work done on these mods, just my tuppence. -
Hi guys I finally managed to tempt a friend of mine who i used to play OFP with years ago to come round and have a bash at Arma. I'd been constantly raving about it to him so he thought he'd bring his spanking new hi-spec laptop round so i could mod him up to the eyeballs (CSM, ArmaEffects..etc) and have a bash at a few coop missions. Anyway, to cut a long story short, we ended up ditching the laptop completely and using my second machine because his laptop, armed with an Nvidia Geforce 8800m (don't know if it was the GTX or GTS, the 'M' range look very similar on paper) simply couldn't handle any settings above "very low" or "disabled" and the resolution width set to around 600 or 700. It just ended up looking like a lego based amiga game. Now i know that a laptop gfx card will never be able to keep up with the equivalent PCIx card but his couldn't keep up with my old Quadro FX1300 from about 4-5 years ago. We tried running older versions of arma with and without mods but to no avail. Is there something we're missing or should we simply give up the idea of trying to run arma on this particular machine. thanks for any help in advance. ps the good news is he's still been converted over to arma.

Arma on laptop with Geforce 8600m
the_bengine replied to the_bengine's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
cheers guys we did spend quite a while messing around with the settings to get the fps up but it was only ever successful when turning every aspect of the detail down. maybe there's a 'sweet spot' that we missed but i really can't believe it would've made that much difference. we also tried the lowplants mod early on but it didn't help much (on my 7900gto i can't live without it) will investigate the driver options, cheers for the link... -
hi thunderbird another happy user here. thanks for your hard work. just an observation really: i took a few of the tanks for a spin round malden and couldn't help but notice that when you drive over any of the grass squares, the whole thing flattens (all 20m squared) and a puff of smoke appears in the middle - presumably utilising similar code to collapsing buildings. given the choice i would've thought it would make more sense to eliminate the collapse altogether if smaller patches of grass can't be flattened individually. like i said, just an observation/suggestion really. keep up the good work....

Arma on laptop with Geforce 8600m

have just checked with him and you're completely right, it is an 8600m. am i to believe that there's no hope of improving the graphics in arma? -
