    Infantry, prepare to be amazed

Guess what I discovered with the new iron sights...............motion sickness!!!! Track IR to look around with, bobbing sights and my eyes telling me that the monitor is actually still = feeling queasy! Theres still a long way to go before this is as playable as OFP was (from the start!.

    STRYKER driver view

So what was the outcome of the original question on this thread? Ive tried iron sights button (still no perisope view) and also zoom option (but the screen view is terrible). Even trying to get around in 3rd person view, the camera is set so low that you cant really see anything either. All I can say is yay, big island but f**k me, what the hell of an abortion have BIS dropped into my CD drive?? I'm sorely disappointed in this game so far

OK, will try that, many thanks.

Probably a dumb question, but where do I put the Coin2 folder in the OFP directory to make be able to play it? Install instructions were missing from the readme and we arent all so great at this stuff!

The Importance of Briefings, of Structure

Jerbo have you ever heard of punctuation? I'm really hoping that English isn't your first language because if it is, the schools obviously failed you! Back to topic: Briefings are an integral part of any mission. It should contain an outline of why the mission is taking place, the objectives of the mission and information as to how those objectives are to be achieved. Obviously, given the flexibility of OFP, the Commander can decide whether or not he will follow the mission orders to the letter or whether he is going to try another strategy to achieve the aim. Most importantly, the plan will only work if the troops under command will listen to and act upon the orders that are given them. There will always be a people that insist on doing things their own way and while this can detract from the overall experience of the other players, it's something to be learned from. Basically, don't join a server or team where you are going to be stuck with those people again. If CTI is going to be as huge as it appears on this new Island, the Commander role will become an absolute full time role. Whilst voice comms are widely used within games, good communication from Commander to teams will become absolutely necessary. There must also be a method of issuing orders direct to section or platoon commanders. Scrolling text chat giving orders can easily get missed, so some form of text based 'radio' system is necessary. This way a Commander can issue orders to a Platoon Leader and they can view the orders in their map screen in the little filofax (if its still there!. BF2 almost got the commander role right and I think that if there is an incentive for players to follow orders, then they will. By setting an attack or defend order on a position (either overall commander or platoon commander), points will be increased fr scoring attacking or defensive kills within that area. Any time spent within that will accrue points for the team. However, there should be a limit to the duration of these zones. Once the platoon commander moves out of the area, it should be cleared fromthe map (and point scoring). I could go on forever with my ideas as to how things could be improved but I'm certain that there are many more people out there with their ideas to share too. I guess the final note is 'Find people that are team players and stick with them'.

    What will you do?

Well, I almost said 'Play the single player Campaign', but after a millisecond of thought, Im going to take a Littlebird (I helped play test the original BAS ones and LOVE THEM!! and give myself a tour of the Island.

No T-80UM / T-90 in ArmA? is that smart?

I have to agree that it doesnt matter what equipment is or isn't available in game. BIS could go on forever modelling every single weapon ever created and we would never see ArmA released. The weapons available will be the ones required to allow enough diversity to make the game intersting, allow the single player campaign to run and to provide sufficient means for MP games to be played. In warfare, you might not have superior numbers, better weapons or the advantage going into battle. The key to survivability is adaptability. Taking what you have available to turn the battle in your favour is what soldiers and commanders have been doing since the first two cavemen threw rocks at each other. In a CTI I once held off 4 tanks with just 4 RPG soldiers and a few carefully placed mines. The other player had a huge advantage with his 4 tanks, but by using careful and thought out tactics I was able to destroy 2 tanks and disable the other two. So, quit whining that you dont have this and you dont have that. If the majority of the OFP community continues to support ArmA, then you will almost be guaranteed the addon you want so much. In the meantime...IMPROVISE, ADAPT, OVERCOME

A light hearted look at CTI

In the early days of CTI, a group of friends and myself would always spend Friday nights (and most of Saturday early mornings) playing whatever flavour of CTI happened to be around at the moment. The biggest killer of the server was desync, which we put down to one of the players listening to Celine Dion while he played and his PC throwing a fit at her awful warbling. Desync brought some strange hallucinations into the game, ghostly tank battles and choppers that whizzed through the air at light speed. One of our friends decided that a few comic strips he had read could quite easily be re-worded to match the characteristics of the people that we had playing CTI. Heres a link, it's been hidden away on our old OFP information page and I dont know if anyone else has ever seen it outside out little group of friends. ENJOY http://tj-www.kicks-ass.org/tjscomic/tjcomic.html

Glad people like them. You have to have played CTI for a loooong time to understand the humour. They guy who made the comics was a little worried about even letting our little group see them in case it offended anyone but he hit the nail on the head with most of us. BTW, in the comics, I'm Tony!! Nedfox and Feesh were almost always the commanders for the sides and needless to say there was often some serious rivalry. The group has sort of gone different ways in the last 18 months but hopefully ArmA and CTI out of the box should bring us all back together again. Also hoping that a certain USA clan that we played, replayed and then replayed again does not want a rematch in ArmA. They were annoyed they got beat the first time, really annoyed the second time (an 8 hour match! and using spec ops to satchel their base before calling "Game Over" and blowing it all to rubble the third time was a bit much for them

    FlashNews 100th Edition!

As an ex soldier with experience in urban tactics, there are so many good places to launch an RPG attack in the picture, it is difficult to choose just one! I guess that we have to try and figure out if the Australian Officer has the same experience, or whether he was sober on the day and just stuck a pin in the pic!! My other question would be "Where do you have to escape to?" In an urban environment it sometimes enough to get out of the kill area and blend back in with the civilian population. Sometimes even one street away is enough!

    ArmA Progress Updates

They may well have a publisher in the pipeline but all these business agreements take time to work out. Part of the deal may be that the publisher is not announced until the game is ready to ship, that way if things dont work out before the release, the publisher doesnt lose 'street cred'! As far as I've seen with BIS, when they make an announcement, they make it BIG. Because of this, I think we will see the publisher announced literally before the game is shipped. I know we all hate waiting, and that information seems to be coming in small drips but the main point is that ARMED ASSAULT IS COMING!! Thats enough to keep me going!

    Track ir

I've had mine a while now and like it a lot. I was surprised and kinda disappointed at the same time when I saw how small it was!! The company had sent it in a much larger box filled with packing foam to make sure it didnt get damaged. Its amazing how something so small can do so much. One downside I have noticed is that it can sometimes be affected by bright sunlight shining off walls. I always use the tools in the setup to make sure there are no bright spots behind me to throw it off.

    ArmA Progress Updates

Apart from the very poor standard of driving in the map (was it AI or human?), the handling of the car appeared to be a huge improvment on OFP. For once it appears that we may get wheeled vehicles that dont have a longer braking distance than a supertanker! The colours looked too bright in some places, a little garish to be honest. Hopefully this is adjustable in some way to tone the colour down a little to give a more natural appearance.

PC Discussion Thread - All PC related in here.

Im wondering if its worth spending 300 quid of my backdated pay to get a second 7900GTX to go in my current PC. I've already spent a fair bit getting it to its current level and I really want to see ArmA in all its graphics glory when it comes out. Maybe I should just hang on until its released and then hopefully prices might have come down a bit more. I'm also really wanting to get this setup watercooled but I dont have the time to plan, test and install all the stuff that I need :/ I know that if I dont do it before ArmA is released that it will never get done!!

    Airstrikes & Artillery

It'd be nice to have a full control system and a quick control system for different levels of users. One of the things I liked about OFP was the Cadet and Veteran mode. It made it easy to get into and once you were confident, switch to veteran mode to continue to develop your knowledge and skill at the game. Using a grid reference isnt accurate enough as the squares are 100m x 100m(?), but at the same time a point and click interface would be too easy and I think players would be tempted to use artillery as their first option if it was available instead of as supporting fire as it is intended. Adjustments are also something that needs to be taken into consideration. For newer players, adjustments could be made relative to their positions and direction of view. Example: they are South of the target and guns are firing from West. For advance players, adjustments could be more realistic and adjustments would have to be made relative to the direction of the guns and shell trajectory. Example: Player is south of target, guns are west of target. Easy mode command of adjust 50m left would be left of the observers position as they viewed the target (or the impact of the first shell). For an advanced player, the command would have to be to drop 50m from the target as the range to the guns in the west would be less. The command to adjust left (as in easy mode) would place the next round 50m to the north relative to the gun position. In the end, you want to have surprise AND precision on your side, so any artillery control needs to be intuitive and easy enough to master for all levels of player. My final suggestion would be for the use of Laser Target Marking to get an exact target position. Modern Artillery Observation Posts and Guns have the ability to compute information from an LTM, relative to the OP position and then transfer this data back to the gun which adjusts as necessary. Example: OP is at grid AB12. Target is lasered at 800M on bearing of NNW. OP transmits this data. Computer knows OP position from GPS, takes distance, direction and altitude, data from LTM and works out the grid of the target. Just a few ideas!!

    Armed Assault FAQ

I'd like to find out more about recommended server specs as I have read in some of the interviews that MP will only be limited by the specification and bandwidth available to a server. I've seen that minimum spec is 2Ghz CPU, 256 RAM and 64 MB Video for clients but what sort of MP capability would this provide? I think in the current trend of hardware development, it would be beneficial if we could find out exactly if support for Dual Core / Dual CPU servers is available and the expected bandwidth overheads for a number of players so that clans can plan their server support for game release. Also with JIP, will the joining players have a choice of the slot that they will fill on entering the game (ie: replace a bot), or is it likely that they will start from a set point in the game (ie: blue/red base). Loadouts. In some missions, it is always the section commanders responsibility to issue weapons and equipment when weapon change is available. Is there the option for a player to kit up themselves and save a template for favourite loadouts for MP games? Hopefully this wouldnt lead to BF2'esque games where everyone decides to go sniper for one map!!

    Grenades

I'm working on a project with a friend of mine that we kind of came up with while having a smoke and shooting the breeze. Using a USB touch screen, he has developed a program called touch-buddy which literally lets him program a 'glass cockpit' environment for controls that would normally be assigned to multiple key controls. I'm putting a profile together for touch buddy and OFP but there are limitations to its use. For example, buttons can only be configured for commands that remain the same. The action menu changes depending on the soldier or group selected and thier proximity to objects. Other commands such as prone, alert, danger, stealth can all be programmed into buttons to replace the keyboard commands. Using it takes a little while to get used to but the interface is completely customisable to any user. You can have tabbed pages for various functions (command, movement, combat) and can layout buttons however you want. Its a slow WIP for me, but my friend is getting a copy of OFP GOTY from me this weekend so that he can try to work some additional function into the idea.

    FFUR - Huge Release !!

Just tripped over this FFUR thread yesterday and decided to download it and get OFP installed back on the PC at the weekend. I need something a lot more challenging than BF2 to fill the gap until Armed Assault!! Does anyone have any screenshots of the various campaigns? I couldn't find many images on the main FFUR site.

    Latest screenshots available

I've posted them some pages ago. If you click on an image, a java script opens a new window with the screen in it. Maybe you've got it deactivated? Just realised that the link for the pics was to Gamestar. When I worked at the NATO HQ in The Netherlands a friend of one of the German Officers there worked for Gamestar. He brought a whole load of military FPS games up for us to playtest and we got our pictures in the magazine too.......but I never got my free copy of the mag, but I did get a free copy of Joint Operations

It´s still one of a kind! Last week i "forced" a guy to play OFP on my PC to convince him. Eventually while doing the Ground Attack mission (after having done more than well in Ambush) he received way too much bullets so i told him to bail out, as he saw himself hinging in the parachute he prepared to stand up.. Teling him that nothing is over until he´s really died left a quite disbelieving expression on his face At a LAN I had with some friends a few years back, one of the friends of the guy hosting it came round to see 'what the geeks were up to'. We got him involved in a few small co-op missions. He sat at that PC from around 7 in the evening until 3 the following morning!! Any time we have a get together now he normally pops in for a mission or two.

What do you *HOPE* will be in ArmA?

That would be a nice thing to be able to do. Be a good way to set up a staged ambush or a 'come on' to divert the enemy into the real killing zone ie: Blow one satchel on a main route and the enemy react by getting off the main route where you have other satchels laid (channel them into a more closed up area), or into mines or AT kill zone.

    Grenades

I'd like to see assorted types of grenades, not just HE and smoke. Flashbangs are useful, especially on house clearing or night ops to blind the enemy. Theyre particularly useful against people using NVG. Phosphorous would also be nice, then you could set fire to tents, small buildings and light vehicles such as jeeps and trucks. They have a nice blast radius and can cause nasty injuries to troops too. They should also not explode on impact as has been said before. I hate to say it, but BF2 has a good way of throwing grenades, either full throw or right click for setting power and throw. Maybe give cadet mode a marker to show where it will land, that way once you have figured them out, its easier to manage in Veteran mode.
