I've been blessed with having the possibility to use MAX 5 by my school and it has my vote even though the price as mentioned earlier is sky high. (around 5000 euros here in Finland, you can get a nice car with that kind of money) Max 5 boasts many features that most users propably never use, mainly complex animation features. But if going for reasonable price and great possibilities one should try Rhinoceros NURBS modelling software. Rather easy to learn great results. More 3dCAD than MAX so exact modelling is possible. Check out Rhino3d

yep, situation like this very common when forum get highly populated. I'm new here so I haven't been there for "the good 'ol days*. Search is a good function any time and there are some great links to some exceptionally good tutorials on net. Sadly it's much more tempting for a newbie to simply post a specific question than shuffle through 600 pages of complete tutorials, even when it contradicts with the whole concept of "tutorial". Modding is manysided process with at least as many questions as people working with it. Maeby there will be a complete list of "all-you-need" tutorials someday. :) ..preferably .PDF documents. -T

Oooh, now I get it. The optimizing acts like smoothing in o2 light. oookey.. I just couldn't limit the effect to certain surfaces only, optimizing caused the model look like something out of looney toons (at least without textures). Even though I've used 3dstudio for 5 years , O2 differs from that so much that it takes time. 3ds format holds the smoothing information and it would have been nice to directly exploit this possibility in O2light. -T

Thanks for all answers. Optimizing was also a good info even though I prefer to do optimizing manually in 3dstudio. Â So if I want to I can use smoothing on surfaces. Smoothing example. I'm working on this Type-95 Kyo-Go right now and it really need smoothing on some parts, as you can see on this picture. Â Thanks for all the answers again.

Looks like I'll make my debut post here with this question. Â Are there any guidelines considering object/face smoothing that would help keeping polygon count in 3dstudio MAX files at reasonable levels when exported to O2? Basically does Oxygen support smoothing groups? I did search and couldn't find info about this. Â Any info appriciated. Cheers. -Tuukka
