Can progress in a mission be saved while the mission is ongoing or is it just part of the agony of the thing that when you get smoked, you have to start over from the very beginning of the mission?

Ok-I know this is weak but I just started this thing and have been lost in the woods for 2 days. Does anyone have a hint on which way to go, or does it matter? I try south, but run into many bad people. Any help is appreciated.
