I imagine that releasing it online themselves could be counter productive to getting a good publishing deal. Ă‚ That sort of thing may kill it in the eyes of a potential publisher.
-
Sorry that's the easy part and any small business or mom/pop store could do that. To truely market in the US you have to get it in Wal-Mart, BestBuy, the game shops and more. Ă‚ These companies will not carry a products from just anyone and contracts are required and in many cases certain requirements be met by the company distributing. In my experience with BestBuy when they approached me about carrying my KidComputers.com systems they wanted me to carry a $1 million dollar consumer insurance plan. This is expensive and very very hard to get. Wal-Mart and many others require that you supply X number of units with the in warehouse ability to distribute X number more BUT they choose the option to actually order those or not. So you may get an initial order for 100,000 copies, and be required to warehouse 500,000 more, then they never order the other 500,000 and RETURN to you say 50,000 copies on top of that because they choose to not carry it anymore. So the US market is expensive and very high risk for publishers. That is probably why they are so flakey, pickey or choosey. Blame the mega corp conglomerants who get to set such high risk and overheads for bringing things to market, or blame yourself for shopping there or investing in their stocks.

I totally agree. Imagine a mortar going off in the mud near your fox hole, it should rain down all kinds of mud and dirt. Same, an explosion in water should bring down a shower of water around it. Trees...I would like to see trees explode into pieces where they are hit, not just tumble over. Showevers of leaves from knocking over a tree would also be cool. Birds would probably also go scattering from tree and area if a tree is ran over by a tank or hit with an explosion.

For realism I would prefer that sniper rifers not be dead on accurate past x meters like they are in some other guns. It is annoying to me to play a game where I can shoot a gun it's maximum range and hit the crosshairs exact. That takes the challange out of shooting and makes it too arcadish. I do however love your idea of adjusting the sights. Here is my idea: When you get a new gun the weapon sights may have a random factor of being off to a varying degree. Ă‚ If you have used this type of gun before you can select an option to adjust sights which load a preset calibration you have saved. Ă‚ You can always fiddle with the calibration and resave it, but only 1 saved calibration per weapon. In OFP you can kill a squad with a well aimed RPG, then run up and loot whatever weapons and they are in perfect condition. Weapons need to take damage as well. If you do grab a weapon that still works chances are that the sights are now really messed up or has higher chances of malfunctioning and jamming. If the weapon isn't a total loss, you should be able to repair it a repair truck, station or whatever.

I am not a modder, I have only made a few maps. But I was wondering what type of forumula is used for things like like firearms and bullets and armor. Are numbers for damage and range just kind of guessimated and plugged in, or do they take say the cycle rate of the weapon, barrel lenght, weapon weight, calibure, mass, KE, of the bullet and other factors like that and plug them into variables to try and reproduce the effects?

Funny I never played GhostRecon, I was thinking of the little diamonds for targets you get as a squad leader in OFP, but that works too.

This thread gave me a great idea for a short story. Enjoy. Joe and His Gun by NinjaTech Joe picks up his gun, the biometrics recognizes Joe and the gun computer boots up into Windows '10 Gun Edition. There is no scope on Joe’s gun, just a tip cam, which links into the gun computer and uses an encrypted wi-fi to send an overlay display into Joe’s cybernetic eye. Joe’s gun computer has an AI named Betty. Betty comes standard on Windows ’10 Professional Gun Edition, you must buy it separtley for the Home edition. Betty tells Joe that she detects 12 hostiles moving in his direction from the south west. Joe asks Betty to give him overhead sat display in his other cybernetic eye. The targets are moving through heavily wooded terrain, so they can only be spotted via satellite thermal imaging, but with TI advanced rendering Joe can clearly see the targets normally. Betty cross references Gun Database v2.09a for each of the targets and digitally indicates the make, model and threat level of each weapon the targets carry. Betty gives Joe 1 in 5,430,230 of being able to defeat the enemy with his current weapons software version and suggests loading GunWare explorer. Joe does so and GunWare Explorer brings up a menu to display his guns current ammo, barrel temp, GPS location. Joe skips all this and goes to Help. Help drills down a list: Trouble Shooting, FAQ about your gun, manufacturer info, Repair and Service center locator, Special Promotional Offers, and Downloads. Joe selects Downloads and then Updates. “DAM†Joe says as he sees he is missing 21 critical gun patches. Maybe he shouldn’t have turned the auto updates off, but those pop ups were just so annoying. “Ok Betty, patch me up to date.†The download bar starts. “Estimated time for patch update 53 seconds.†Betty says to Joe, “Hostiles ETA 30 seconds.†Joe needs to buy himself a little time, so he activates his telepathic wet ware WAN to instant message Billy Ramos aka: ShadowStorm596 back at HQ. “Wazup!†Joe thinks. “Wazup!†Billy aka ShadowStorm596 replies. “Forward observing 12 hostiles at grid 55 AB, requesting supporting fire.†“Roger that, firing Howitzer Anti Gun Computer DoS now.†ShadowStorm596 clicks out. Joe observers via the sat link the enemy has stopped while they adjust their Gun Computer fire walls. “GunWare now updated.†Betty chirps. “About dam time, lets rock and load some FMJ staggered with HE and AP-EMP rounds, and a tad of Quantum DU.†Joe says while going prone. “Request ordinance loaded.†Betty replies, “Safety is disengaged your weapons hot.†“Bragging again Betty?†Joe teases. At two thousand meters crests the wooded hill Joe faces, the first diamond target tag marking the enemy overlays in his display. Digital enhancing magnifies the target better then any conventional scope could. Face recognition software begins an analysis of the targets facial features and transmits the information to the HQ server farm for a DB match. In less then a second the targets name, age, rank, social security number, address, cell and fax number are relayed back and displayed next to the targeting diamond. There is no trigger on Joe’s gun, he only has to think the command “fireâ€. Betty is programmed to only fire when the trajectory of the gun lines up perfectly with the target, taking into account atmospheric pressure, wind speed and humidity. “Fire†Joe thinks, and the gun begins to kick into shoulder as the woods begin to vaporize under the hail of caseless rounds Betty spits out. Besides the wizzing then thumping of the bullets smacking into trees, HE rounds exploding two thousand meters away and screams of the enemy, it is quiet where Joe lies in the foliage. The new sound suppression and counter shot white noise amplifier makes Joe’s gun a stealthy tool of destruction. Betty stops firing, trees creek and crack as they fall over in the distance. “Joe, eleven hostiles have been destroyed.†“Where is the last one Betty? How did we miss him?†“Sorry Joe, but you failed to get that 10 terra bite memory upgrade I suggested last month, my available memory became full and I had to rely on the cache, which was slower to que which allowed one target time to take cover.†“It’s alright Betty, I’ll get you a ram doubler later. Show me where he’s at.†“A ram doubler?†Betty growls insulted. But Betty can multi-task her injured pride with any number of application requests. The sat display comes back up and indicates the target is hiding behind a rock cropping. He’s crawling into a good position much higher then Joe. “DANGER!†Betty flashes to Joe. Joe rolls behind a tree for cover but he continues to hold his gun around the trunk at a ninety degree angle to his body. He only needs to expose his hands and his gun, he can see everything the gun can via the tip cam. The enemy is doing the same he’s holding his gun over the rock in outreached arms to not expose himself. “Betty can you shoot his gun?†Joe asks. “Affirmative Joe, but you will need to move 5 meters to the left so I can acquire target.†“What are the odds you will hit?†“95.45%†Betty replies. Pretty dam good odds, Joe thinks, and leaps out from behind the tree. “FIRE BETTY FIRE!â€, he yells. A split second later Joe feels a thump in his chest. But it wasn’t from his gun. He looks down to see his flack jacket and trauma plate pierced, blood trickles down his fatigues and Joe feels cold. Everything goes black. “Joe, I shot the enemies gun and target was eliminated…Joe?†Betty analyzes Joe’s bio signs a second before instant messaging HQ that Joe has been KIA. Send reinforcements.

Killed? Keep playing!  &  Ch/Sel,Scroll&Command

There is a commander view, hit M, it's the map. For a while I did nothing but run missions where you sit back in a command tent and send your squad out using the map. Watch it, tell them where to go, listen to what they say, give them orders and try and get them to finish the mission without you ever leaving the command tent. It's a really different and kind of cool way to play OFP. Doesn't work for all missions of course, you usually have to design your own. -
You can't stop people from making mods however they want to. Many people have different ideas on how things should work or be balanced such as damage, armor, penetration and the like. But if an official group was made to say no no, that is not how we invision a NIJ TL IV vest to stop bullets, or a stealth bomber to fly, or the type of damage from a Stinger should be, and what about the modder who is doing a Star Was, or GI Joe cartoon mod? Then there could be some real frustration and bitterness in the modding community. I think it would be fine for groups of modders to create their own approved mod lists. What I would really like to see is being able to automatically download any mod a server is running if I don't already have it. With information about that mod before the download with an option for me to not download it and move onto another server if I want.

Dude you need to upgrade. Ă‚ Hows BF2 run for you with those specs?

These ideas for armor vs. weapon are really good and will hopefully be considered for Game 2. I'm sure there is some military test study data out there someone could get their hands on. Angle of impact is also important for purposes like glancing. I'm not sure if reflexive armor is worth mentioning or fesabile to work in. Using hit points or not to use them is a tuff one. When armor takes damage it's integrity is most likeley lessened. The easiest way to handle this seems like to use a HP system but doesn't always seem realistic. In my game Black Ops RPG we came up with giving each armor segment it's own armor piercing rating depending type and thickness of armor, also each segment has x amout of hit points depending on mass and/or scale of the segment. Weapons all have their own penetration value which may or may not be adjusted by range. If the weapons AP score is greater then the penetration rating of the armor then it does damage against the hit points of the segment. Some weapons penetration as AP rounds or sabot may have their penetration score modified depending on angle of impact. A round may glance off or the the segment become dented but not penetrated from anangled hit, with greater chance of penetration from head on impacts. We have to use spreadsheets and protractors, but it's the closest simulation we've found for pencil and paper war simulation.

Anybody catch the news about the joint war games between Russia and China this last week? "Sending a clear message to the West" so the reporter says. US would have a tuff fight on their hands going up against China or Russia in a conventional war. China and Russia allied together against NATO would be very interesting indeed. Ă‚ Combined they out produce the US in weapons. Ya we may have the superior technology, but remember WW2? The German's had superior technology but it was only because of our mass production capabilities that allowed us to beat them. Same thing. Ă‚ As I remember a documentary of a Tiger Tank creman saying that they could easily take on 10 american tanks, but there always seemed to be an eleventh.

Drives me bonkers with new games like BF2 where your tank clanks into the undestructable wooden wall. One of the things I loved about OFP. However there's still some of those steel trees that exist. I want to see bullet holes through walls. And be able to peep through those holes into the womens locker room.

Built in compass for the mirror, wow that would be the shetznak.

I've been playing the old OFP again with a hell of a lot better system then I had before. But some mission FPS are very dissapointing. I imagine that it has to do with the old engine and certain limitations in it. Probably this will be addressed with the revamped engine optimized for DX9. (crossing fingers)

Granted not everyone's PC is created equal so video setting options will be unique for most users. Howerver for those that use elements of terrain such as vegiation and grass for concealment and stealth should not have that concealment stripped from them by a player who turns off or down certain video effects. If the best way across a certain field of tall grass is to crawl on your belly thru it, but sniper BOB turns off his grass effect and then makes the players completely visisble who are crawling across that field then what's the point of it tactially? Players will simply turn off those effects so they can reveal other players and that is just wrong. Ă‚ JO did a good job balancing this issue. Ă‚ If the grass is turned off then the player simply can't be seen in that field of grass he's crawling through. Players who turn on such settings can have a better chance spotting the target, because they may see thru parts of the grass or notice the grass moving irregularly. Also grass, treess and bushes should blow around with the wind. And when your Helicopter comes landing down in a field of tall grass to pick up or unload some soldiers you should see the grass being pushed down by the force of the chopper blades. This was done in JO so I know it can be done easily, that little touch makes a huge authentic feel to chopper insertions and extractions. Oh, and grass/forest fires would be a nice touch too. It would be a great tactical maneuver to route, block or destroy enemies. But setting such fires may have variables depending on weather and time of year. Random fires may set off themselves too from explosions, crashes, tracers, etc.

Definantly, there is so much random spread mods for OPF it is insane and turns new players away when they have to go dig for these add ons. Also some of these addons can be very difficult to get now as many modders have closed their websites where they were once available. Ă‚ There needs to be a way for users to acquire the mod addons when joining (if they haven't already gotten them) or see what mods a game requires before joining. Automatically downloading mods when joining could be a security risk so BIS needs to look into reducing such a risk for users. As far as JIP or not to JIP, this needs to be a server admin option and leave it out of missions building completely. No reason to create two versions of all the games just to satisfy both. Server admin options should also include ping rate filtering, where the admin can say that pings greater then # can not join. Ă‚ Maybe even some filtering script options similar to apf and/or chain rules to block certain ips or ip blocks as well as player IDs so the community can do their own policing against cheaters and trouble makers. In JO the NA server list that usually had 150 players and good ping rate for me there was one clown who was on almost every night that did nothing but crash TK his own teams helicopters into ones that spawn. So he got no real TK but denied that team the use of helicopters, which was huge dissadvantage and would cost that team the game. Such abusive players need to have some way of being blocked. And votes need to be a % of the team the TKer is on not both teams. Because when we initiated a kick against that player the other team usually would not vote to kick him because he was actually helping them out by his actions. JO offered 150 player support and usually was usually lag free, I don't see why Game2 could not do the same, especially if the ideas of server arrays was implimented. And if players could control squads of up to 10 NPC each that could offer some mega battles. That would bring the scope of the game truely into feeling like a massive comflict. I've played in some JO Advance and Capture games with no time limits that lasted more then 12 hours for one session. In those sessions pretty much from the time I started to the time I quit everyone else had left and new players had taken their place, but the battle continued on, Game 2 could easily be the same way.

I wonder if there will be multiple different scenario arcs in the campaign. Where the story can go different directions if you win or loose, or do something critical during a game event.
-
I could live with at least 64 player support.

PlanetSide is still the most kick ass MMOFPS, but it is dated and a there is a huge void for a modern warfare AND modern engine MMOFPS. Things I noticed comparing JO to PlanetSide. Both have a mixture of solo players, but PlanetSide utlized guilds which actually helped organize a lot of those unorganized players. In JO people just join a game and run around doing there own thing, maybe a few would coop tactically while using VOIP. In PS there was a lot more cordination for those in guilds, using VOIP or not. Allowing players to form squads and platoons also helps coordinate them better especially when given devices like in PS where squad leaders could mark waypoints that made it simple for those in the group to know what the actual target is and where. This could easily be done in Game 2 as well, with or without MMO aspect, and highly recommend it being added if the devs haven't already.

Pick up Tonal campaign and map for OFP. I would like to see: NATO vs. Russia vs. China. Three ways are the best.

POLL: Wich one? BIS or Codemaster for OFP2*?
ninjatek replied to bravo 6's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Maybe the poll should be "Who do you think will release their version of OFP2/Game2 first?" Honestly BIS will probably be better quality, I'm betting Codies will try to steer the game to more BF style arcade action. Especially if BIS is planning on adapting Game2 engine to VBS2. -
confused about the state of OFP2/nextgen/whatever
ninjatek replied to therealFerox's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Ok so AA is a pre game before Game 2. Game 2 is basically OPF2 by Bohemia but the name OPF2 is not official as that is owned by Codemasters who is not working with Bohemia anymore. But Codemasters may release their own OFP2 sometime? WOE that is confusing to a degree. If that is really the way I understand it. Or is it that AA will not be released by Codemasters but Bohemia will make OFP2 to be published by codemasters still. If Codemasters releases their own OFP2 using that name but Bohemia is not the developer, then who the hell is? After 4 years no game developer has come close to matching OFP, does Codemasters really know of someone else who can? Ă‚ And if they do would Bohemia's Game 2 simply blow CM's OFP2 to shreds sense they have the experience and would be leaps ahead of anyone else? -
There is a limit to realism in a game or even simulator. You can't smell the napalm, you can't feel the smack of a bullet ripping off your face. Who want's to be playing a character who gets his limbs blown off but is still alive lying on the battlefield screaming for mommy? (Can't respawn your still technically alive.) OPF is still the best war sim, but it did and probably will leave out in Game 2 some of the horrors of war. Imagine if you will even playing the single player how those who get wounded will be screaming in pain and agony. Should soldiers surrender if beaten and can't escape? In many cases of RL they would, but what do with them in a war sim? Would you just execute them because you don't want to deal with prisoners and want to move onto the next target? And that's just for the AI, players themselves would never surrender when you know you can just respawn if you die.

2010 is so close to now it's basically not sci-future. But does give way for concept vehicles, weapons and story line. I'm thinking they chose 2010 because the idea of war on terror should have pretty much run it's course and new global comflicts of super powers could resurface. It would probably be a 3 way super powers battle NATO vs. China. vs. Russia. And 5 more years give cause to allow Russia to gets it military act back together and be a more modern threat again, not that it isn't already. China's war technology development is nothing to sneeze at. Using NATO insteadl of just the US it allows them to reuse some of the stuff from Aussie, UK, etc. they developed already for VBS. Howerver I'm just guessing here of course. It may even have to deal with the oil crisis that will only get worste by that time, and a war over oil would NOT include the middle east countries as much as the US, Russia and China again. Check out the documentary movie "Oil Storm". Then again it may just be another rogue General Guba again All is speculation.
