Future of political debate in OT

Two seperate threads, mainly because both are extremely broad topics that cover alot of ground, and they are extremely hard to keep track of as they are. Combining both would be a bigger headache. While I don't really post in those threads (being from neither), I do read them once in a while, because I find them extremely interesting and educational. Plus, I might learn a trick or two every now and then. The quality of political debate in these threads, I can safely say, far exceeds that of many dedicated political forums, but that's not saying much . There's also a better representation of viewpoints as well as a better balance of rhetoric and logic in these forums. Believe it or not, it is alot more civil here, even when things get 'heated'. In short, politics should stay!

    Filters!

Saving semitransparent in OFP: I do it this way, save as TGA, the size of the texture must be 2^x * 2^x. Turn off RLE compression and Origin at bottom right when saving. Save as *.paa in Texview. Choking scripts are done with the titleText command, I believe. that it uses BLACK IN momentarily with a short duration. A flashbang would use a WHITE IN (? I don't have the references at hand) effect for titleText, followed by a playsound of ears ringing. TitleText is used for cutscenes, that's why the AI is unaffected by it. What the AI would be affected by is a custom 'stun' anim though! I think an issue would be you don't know if the unit is staring at the flashbang or not. A unit can be facing the flashbang but staring at the sky. Of course, not every unit will be affected by the flashbang, unless you declare a "hit" eventhandler for them. I know there is a fadesound command somewhere too... All these commands are for annoying the player. AI is unaffected by these things. EDIT: some formatting

    Gimbal's Tossers in the news

Argh. I once saw this extremely professional looking lady climb up on the desk in the Taiwan parliament on TV, brandishing her high heeled shoes and taking swipes at the opposition. It made me cringe. It was funny at first, but the frequency at which this kind of thing happens makes it really scary.

    Some c&c stuff

Woah, that sure brings back memories. C&C was how I fell in love with computer gaming in the first place, and I really loved the tiberian series (Kane, anyone?). The recon bike was my fave unit. I think you can add rockets to a bike using PSY MCAR's method. That should work.

    Generic OPFOR

Not sure if I understand your question right, but I'm not really doing these certain types of rebels, I'm sticking to generic, I'm just basing some ideas on them. So I am not depicting them as they are, rather they are sources of inspiration. I have pointed out that they are difficult to portray accurately because they are camera-shy Just to clear things up, Me (and it's just me alone) - Generic Bushfires - African CZM - Abu Sayyaf type and Asian Islamic type CSLA - Desert and some other types for their mod We aren't all the same mod. Sorry for any confusion caused .

    Generic OPFOR

I really agree with Edge regarding specific OPFOR. That's why I'm looking foward to things like Bushfires and CZM. But the problem with those guys are good source pictures. Information about their gear tend to be scarce also, and much of the information about them cannot be found in English (thank goodness I know some Indonesian). Right now I'm drawing as much inspiration from the Colombian Paramilitaries, GAM in Aceh, Mahidi in East Timor, the Abu Sayyaf, the IRA, Cuban forces, PMCs, other computer games, and random pictures of militants and third world military I find on the web. They tend to be very shy when posing for hi res pics, thus depicting the accurately can be extremely challenging. Generic OPFOR has advantages when it comes to storytelling though. They are not restricted by time and place. So they can be anti FIA partisans, Jungle guerrillas, A drug lord's private army... the possibilities are endless. I really hope that more people would explore different themes in OFP.

    Generic OPFOR

    1) Because making things look different actually requires not that much effort (if you work smart). 2) Because it is fun to shoot and kill different looking things (in ofp of course). Regarding civil clothes, those are planned. As for the masks, ammobelts, I already have done the model. I just need to get the base models done (which should be possible by this week). Then I'll need to get the LODs done. Ofp does ALOT of strange things to the model ingame, so tweaking and playing around with the selections takes a really long time... Regarding desert OPFOR, those are just textures. I'll see how fast I can churn things out so it might be included in my first beta release, if not it will be included in the next. In any case, I believe it is possible for me to create a system that allows the use of your own custom textures on my models without much fuss. Mercs and more hi-tech terrorists would require some more modelling on my part. Again, depending on how fast I go, would depend on whether those guys come in the first release or the next. ME and snow would require a bunch of new models, and models are the ones giving me headaches. Maybe in a seperate release? As for vehicles and others, I'll consider them. Depends on how sick I get of modelling at the end of this project, I guess. One thing bad (or good) about making my projects public is I have an obligation to finish and release it Eeehee... PS. I might need beta-testers soon... not yet, but anyone wants to volunteer in advance? PM me.

    Bushfires Mod

Hey, dropping by, Looking good guys! (Maybe the screens were a tad over-sharpened) PS. I'd really like to help you guys out. I might know squat about Africa, but I'm willing to learn more. I'm also busy on my OPFOR pack at the moment, but I know my work is kind of related so... Skills are: Scripting (incl. math), texturing, modelling (some). (in that order)

    Generic OPFOR

OK. I'll do that. Furthermore, I'll be splitting them along the lines of Hi Tech vs. Low Tech. (this may be done in two seperate packs I dunno, still trying to get the models done) And of course split them according to the models: Civil style, Sleeveless, BDU. I'll be dumping the textures in a seperate PBO so it'll be easy for us all to modify. I have a question though, how well does the BAS Civilian ® work in MP? I'm using a technic similiar to that, so I'd like to know how it'll turn out. Another thing MAAM or JAM? Or both (if I have time)?

    Generic OPFOR

Nah, I'm not randomizing the weapons. Gear and equipment in this case refers to headgear, vests and stuff. Guess I didn't make myself clear. If people want to randomize loadouts it is best done by the mission maker, sez I. Eye candy is the domain of the addon maker.
  12. newiy

    Generic OPFOR

Randomizing things via script and creating flexible systems is one of the things I'm good at (I'll make it open for others to cannibalize). I'm still exploring the finer arts of texturing, modelling and configging. Anyway, I'm still working on models and textures, the script in it's full glory will have to wait.

    Generic OPFOR

Actually, from all the pics I've seen, model-wise, the terrorist look is pretty universal (except maybe the stereotypical Middle eastern guys), the main difference is in the "low budget" and the "well-funded" guys. Even then, the difference is mainly in the equipment. As for third world vs. European, the main difference is in the face textures. Anyway, the African guy in the middle does look pretty third world, doesn't he? Aside from modelling and texturing, I'm working on a system to randomize their gear (mostly because I'm too lazy to code configs for each and every imaginable type of OPFOR guy). I'll TRY to make the system as flexible as I can, thus allowing both standardization as well as randomness (default). As you can see above, the script has been tested on the headgear. And theoretically, *IF* all goes well, it may even be possible to use your own custom textures as well (I'll provide templates don't worry). So maybe If you wanted AUSCAM that wouldn't be too much of a dream... provided you'd be willing to supply your own camo or if someone feels benevolent and stuff. ;) I knew all the scripting I picked up would come in handy some day! But I'll definitely need someone to help me on the MP side of things. I'd also appreciate it if someone was willing to brief me on the limitations of the 'setObjectTexture' command.

Fear not, I don't have the time to make custom weapon packs. They are using JAM atm.

    Generic OPFOR

What would really go well with this is a good facepack representing all sorts of people. Then white guys don't have to shoot black guys all the time. Instead, other peoples of all races get to kill and be killed too. I'm more confident now, I might even consider doing middle eastern model(s), but they won't have middle eastern faces. But what would really be cool is some Asian faces.

    Joint ammo and magazines (jam)

Maybe not in one package... ECP just lags too much for me But a new JAM-type package would be cool. And it's not too difficult to uh... "not-JAM" versions older addons. Just do it the way we JAM addons today. Of course, the problem is getting all the permission we need.

Those are the uniformed guys, for when you want Russia or US to invade a small country or peacekeeping ops. I'm also making the non-uniformed guys, don't you worry. They just require some modelling (and alot of texturing), that's why I can't show much of them now. Also, I've been looking at those pics in the other thread and are trying to do something along those lines too.

Wow, they do look really nice. I'm gonna have a hard time matching your standards. EDIT: Grammar

Another pic: Yellow ERDL with bandana What he needs is a model with short sleeves (umm... help? I need hints on how to do that). And an ammobelt (I should be able to do this).

    Generic OPFOR

They are 'nobody'. Hence generic. I put in the ability to change the armpatch so they could be somebody if you wish...

Do you guys prefer the guy on the right or on the left? Or should I keep both? The guy on the left is easier to spot. EDIT: Now you see it.

    Generic OPFOR

@Ironsight: Thanks, I'll check out the site. @Munk: Don't worry, I'm really busy too and still learning O2. Some of the help I need now is just plain reference pics and pics to derive textures from. Suggestions for webbing is especially welcome... Buttpack, ammopouches, vests, harnesses, handheld radios, backpacks, ammo belt, headgear... I'm still considering my options. Well, I need and I need a good sleeve texture. A generic cloth texture is good too. @ran: Yep, that was initially the idea. So the pics I'm looking for are of smaller, obscure armies (those kind of armies some major power are going try to beat up sooner or later ). Good pics of them are REALLY hard to find. I'm also interested in good paramilitary pictures. Currently my idea of paramilitary is guys in a black top and camo pants.

    Generic OPFOR

I really don't mind. I'd like to get an Idea as to what these OPFOR are like. Perhaps you would like to see what I have to offer first?
