is there one you fellow m/players would recommend,which still gives the ability to split speech into teams etc as direct play did with use of caps lock and the comma key

hi i've just joined so treat me gently. after installing windows xp pro,when i use direct play for in game speech i cannot hear anyone allthough they can hear me.the game sound is fine,i've unistalled and reinstalled the game,i've also reapplied the 1.9 patch which my fellow players use.the mikes ok because i can use it on messenger no probs i've got an amd athlon 2400 processor,geoforce 4 mmx440 8x graphics card,gigabyte ga7va motherboard with onboard sound(avance ac 97 audio),256mbddr memory. it seems strange that on good old windows 98 there was no problem and with xp there is.
