What is "Against the Rising Sun"? It is a modification, or "mod" for the upcoming game "Armed Assault". The mod will be split into campaigns, with the Australian campaign in Papua being released first. The main focus of the mod is the fighting in the pacific against Japan during the Second World War. Who do we play as? In the first campaign, you will play as an Australian digger, fighting along the Kokoda trail, at Milne Bay and at the battle of the beach-head during mid 1942 to early 1943. Other campaigns will include the "Chindits" during "Operation Thursday" in Burma, the 3rd New Zealand Division fighting on Vella Lavella, Green Island and Treasury Island, and finally a continued Australian campaign in New Guinea, Bougainville and Borneo. What will be so special with this mod? Historical accuracy and realism are the key features. Alot of research is being done all the time to ensure every aspect is historically accurate. At the time of writing, the Lithgow Small Arms Museum" and the "Australian War Memorial" are both helping out to make sure everything is correct. From the weapons, uniforms and equipment to villages, beaches and rivers - everything will be made as close to the real thing as the "Against the Rising Sun" team can get it. the idea being to make an "interactive documentary". ------------------------------------------------------------- I'm currently modelling and texturing a number of weapons and vehicles for the mod, they include: Vickers machine gun (Modelling stage) Owen gun (Texturing stage) 1928 Thompson (Texturing stage) Arisaka Type 38 (Modelling stage) LP2 Carrier (Modelling stage) More info and some work in progress screens can be viewed at the Against the Rising Sun Website. You'll also find some historical information, which will expand over time (whenever i have some time to update it). Ah, there is swearing, sweeeeet. Seeing as OFP had a lack of it (apart from the "hot damn" and other comical replacements for swearing ) , I didn't think there would be any in ArmA.
-
MA 17+ for strong language? While I don't have Armed Assault yet, (only played the demo) I didn't know there was any swearing in it. (Not that I'm against it or anything). Is there swearing in it?

Quick update. Getting very close to finishing the M1918A2 BAR that the American 32nd Division used at Buna. Just need to finish the rear sight. Work on the SMLE Mk.III* is coming along nicely and should be finished soon. EDIT ------------------- The SMLE Mk.III* is at a decent render stage. See render below.

It's great that someone has picked up on that Makes all the research I've put into the mod so far worthwhile. I think I spent a good month collecting info and annoying museums for photos to get it right. The diggers modified almost everything or there were aussie versions of each piece of equipment. I think by the end of this, I'll be able to get a job as a historian

Quick update. I've been working on the Bren Gun Mk.I which is almost ready for UVW unwrapping. Bren Gun Mk.I (Work in Progress Render) Also working on the Lee Enfield Mk.III* but it's far from complete to show now.

Update time. My internet has been out for the past month, so I haven't been able to post updates. The Japanese Type 96 LMG model is finished and I've started texturing. Work in progress render of the Type 96 LMG I'm also working on an M3 Stuart tank, with all the Australian modifications. Work in progress render of the M3 Stuart I'm also working on the Bren Gun Mk.I and 25 pounder.

Sorry about the lack of updates, my time is split between uni and my part time job, not leaving too much time to work on the mod. Here is an update on the Japanese Arisaka Type 38 rifle. Arisaka Type 38 WIP render Please note the texture is NOT completed, and as it's a WIP it doesn't represent the final quality of the rifle. To the mods, can you move this to the ArmA mod thread, purrrty please?

I'd be willing to incorparate my Australian/"Chindit"/New Zealand/Papuan/Japanese Second World War units into some form of "World War 2 pack", even before the release of my mod. I like the idea of being able to download one big addon pack with alot of units, instead of hunting for them all - and then having compatability problems.

No supressive fire? I was really looking forward to seeing the AI use it.
-
The running to prone and standing to prone animations look great. The running animation looks a bit funny and some of the walking animations look a little stiff, but, as it has been stated many times it is WIP.
-
Great trailer, just one thing bothers me. I know that not every Japanese gun on Suribachi opened up as the marines landed (they opened up as soon as the beaches became congested), but I'm almost certain the landings were opposed from the get go (with the marines pinned on the first few sand walls until holes were cut for the tanks). I'll have to refer to my books again.
-
I'm hoping that we can animate with o2 (rigging and animating) and be able to import animations from other programs (like 3ds max or maya).
-
Top bloke and a true blue aussie, he'll be missed but not forgotten.
-
The tanks have interiors now? http://arma.bigames.info/photo.php?img=664 Ops, it's an APC
-
Thats what the F key is for,it was in OFP,regardless of it all,I highly doubt somebody can hold their gun to their shoulder and fire while moving, atleast not as efficiently as they were not moving (dur ) It seems fine the way it is really. I remeber Dslyecxi posted a video of himself running forward firing a rifle (can't remember what type it was) in his article "Tactical Gaming Done Right". http://dslyecxi.com/bestoftactical.html The video I'm talking about is on the second page, 2nd video down. http://dslyecxi.com/bestoftactical2.html As you can see, he has no trouble firing the weapon shouldered while moving.

Great screenshots! I see they fixed the problem of grass not being affected by shadows
-
Yeah your right, I didn't think about that.
-
Wouldn't slining a wounded mate over your shoulder possibly cause him to die? Especially if he has a stomach wound or a sucking chest wound. Stretchers with perhaps two bearers would be more suitable, or two blokes holding up the wounded soldier by the arms as they run out of the hot zone, with perhaps the wounded mans rifle under his knees/butt to hold him off the ground if his legs are buggered. As a "punishment" to the blokes carrying the stretcher or the wounded man by the arms, they get fatigued very quickly (with the whole huffing and puffing sound). Just my opinion, I'm not a medic/corpsman.

With all the new animal AI, a hunting mod would be great fun
-
Oh yesss yesss yesss!!! (That made my day) O_. Made my day too! Gone are the days of hands sticking through weapons and the same reload sequence for all guns Now, all I need to hear is that you can have an animation between shots (working the bolt on bolt action, or working a pump action shotgun) then I'm set. Animation wise that is. The ability to climb over objects sounds sweet to (if that's what they meant by jumping in certain places).
-
Shweeet I haven't seen this in any of the screenshots, I was worried it wasn't being added (in one screen, a soldiers hand is sticking through the grenade launcher under his AK). Forward pistol grips with hands that fit!

I'm looking forward to this one, I just hope they don't make it too "hollywood" if you know what I mean. I haven't read Flags of Our Fathers, but I do have "The Battle for Iwo Jima" by Derrick Wright. I'm interested to see how the landings and the congestion on the landing zones will look in the movie .
