Back to problems: memory management failure

Yes, reboot is prompted by the system when you change the VMem setting, so it is hard to forget. FYI, I am now back to automatic Swap File & to "default" Visibility (900, I think), and it works fine. I have the impression that it is related to visibility being set too high, resulting into some sort of overflow? I may be wrong... PS: I had the same symptoms on my two systems...

    Resistance is completely broken

You seem to have problems greater than mines! Now, the -nosplash flag DOES work with Resistance. Dunno what's wrong with yours, but it works with me. I also run 1600x1200 without the symptoms you describe. However, it is true that all the intro screens & movies are very slow, even with my configuration that is quite more powerful than yours (Athlon 1800+ & GeForce TI4400). I am not sure that you get that much greater visuals with 1600x1200 than say, 1280x960. However, as soon as you set "terrain details" to very high (I don't know what it does but I wouldn't settle for less, with such a name for this parameter...), and if you try tweaking the "visbility" beyond 900 (very far from the maximum), then things start to get really slow or even crash with memory problems: I guess they've put options for the next two generations of CPUs and Graphic cards. So either your configuration is not enough for your settings, or you've got something else wrong. But OFPR is wired to do the things you describe... E.

Back to problems: memory management failure

    Hi OFP Lady, Good question. Here is the Flashpoint.RPT content. FYI, memory swap file was set to manual 2000MB (min & max), and there is 8.3 Gigabytes free on that disk. ===================================================================== == C:\PROGRAM FILE\OPERATIONFLASHPOINT\FLASHPOINTRESISTANCE.EXE ===================================================================== Exe version: Fri Jun 28 16:33:12 2002 file: intro world: intro campaign: battle: mission: ===FROZEN====>>>>>>BEG Version 1.75 Fault address: 005299A2 0101289A2 C:\PROGRAM FILE\OPERATIONFLASHPOINT\FLASHPOINTRESISTANCE.EXE Prev. code bytes: 55 EC 85 D0 75 1A 8B 96 F4 04 02 00 0F AF 55 EC Fault code bytes: 8B 9E E8 04 02 00 03 D1 D9 04 93 D9 5D 94 EB 03 Registers: EAX:FFFFF800 EBX:1D845800 ECX:000007CA EDX:00225000 ESI:105E6E00 EDI:000007C9 CS:EIP:01AF:005299A2 SS:ESP:01B709FF860 EBP:009FF964 DS:01B7 ES:01B7 FS:0FCF GS:0000 Flags:00000246 ===FROZEN====>>>>>>END ===FROZEN====>>>>>>BEG Version 1.75 Fault address: B0107B71 00051FF56 Prev. code bytes: 8B 4D F0 8B 75 F4 8B 55 F8 8B 7D FC 0F 6F 46 00 Fault code bytes: 0F 6F 4E 08 0F 7F 47 00 0F 7F 4F 08 03 F2 83 C7 Registers: EAX:000000C5 EBX:00000001 ECX:000039C5 EDX:00000020 ESI:EE7738A0 EDI:F7A94410 CS:EIP:01AF:B0107B71 SS:ESP:01B709FD434 EBP:009FD45C DS:01B7 ES:01B7 FS:0FCF GS:0000 Flags:00000206 ===FROZEN====>>>>>>END ===FROZEN====>>>>>>BEG ===================================================================== == C:\PROGRAM FILE\OPERATIONFLASHPOINT\FLASHPOINTRESISTANCE.EXE ===================================================================== Exe version: Fri Jun 28 16:33:12 2002 file: 01Invasion world: Noe campaign: resistance battle: Outrage mission: Invasion ===FROZEN====>>>>>>BEG Version 1.75 Fault address: 00529F79 010128F79 C:\PROGRAM FILE\OPERATIONFLASHPOINT\FLASHPOINTRESISTANCE.EXE Prev. code bytes: 84 C0 8B 45 C8 8D 14 09 74 1C D8 0D F0 34 71 00 Fault code bytes: D9 45 B0 D8 45 A8 D8 0D D4 CD 6F 00 DE E9 D8 85 Registers: EAX:000003E8 EBX:00000181 ECX:000000C0 EDX:00000180 ESI:105E6E00 EDI:1A820300 CS:EIP:01AF:00529F79 SS:ESP:01B709FF860 EBP:009FF964 DS:01B7 ES:01B7 FS:0E27 GS:0000 Flags:00200202 ===FROZEN====>>>>>>END ErrorMessage: Cannot allocate 430 MB of virtual memory.     Back to problems: memory management failure

Ah no! We are speaking of an entirely fresh install. No add-on, no nuthing...

Back to problems: memory management failure

OK. I recovered from the memory errors by erasing the Config file in the User folder, which gets back to the original default configuration. Still a strange Memory bug, though, which limits a lot the tweaking of parameters and which shows weaknesses in memory management... And when I set the Virtual Memory manually, I get another BTD with a message saying that it "Cannot allocate 273MB of virtual memory; You probably have your hard disk full; If you control your swap file manually, consider setting it bigger; Current swap file settings: Total: 500MB Available: 184MB" Can't be my hard disk, though, I have 30 Gigabytes free...

    Anyone found best settings...

Or equivalent configuration? All on Win98SE. There are more settings than in OFP, and some compromises seem difficult to make (ex: Terrain Detail vs. Visibility... Screen Depth vs. Image Quality...) I am currently playing in 1200 x 960, Terrain Details Very High (don't quite know what this means, but I like the concept), Visibility of 900 (too bad for the scenery...), Framerates requested around 15-25, HW T&L, Object Shadows Enabled (curious to see that the default is Disabled!, Drop-Down x2, and most other settings not touched from their "automatic" configuration with "Preferences". I have also kept my previous GeForce settings ("4S antialiasing" on, "anisotropic filtering set by application"). I also reset Windows Virtual Memory to automatic after OFP went to desktop telling me that my HD was too small for the Fixed Virtual Memory I had set (in which OFP was wrong). Since then, I did not have this issue anymore. Picture is nice (I love in particular all the new bumps & holes in the terrain, which make the fighting and the movements so different from what it was with OFP - although I don't know if this is correlated to the "terrain detail" - and the new trees with their 100% realistic leaves...), and fluidity is not bad. However there is some bad stuttering here and there (looks to me like some memory management issues) especially noticeable in the Videos, and I am sure that my settings could be much improved either in terms of stability of FPS, or of quality of image. Question is how? E. PS: Oh, and by the way, I have two identical systems set on 2 partitions of the same disk (meaning sharing same hardware - done with System Commander 7), where I upgraded the GeForce drivers to the same latest version (29.80). Well, OFP was working fine with System 2 before the upgrade (i.e. when driver version was 27.50). Now, neither OFP nor Resistance work on System 2 (with drivers 29.80: systematic freeze a few seconds within the Intro movie). But they work fine on System 1 with exactly the same config (Win 98SE, same shared hardware, same apps on both systems, 29.80 drivers)... And OFP worked on none of the two systems when I was using 28.32 drivers. I am going mad...

    Best nvidia drivers for opf

In any case, don't try the 28.32 (latest "official version" on NVidia site), they freeze OFP a few seconds within the game. Hopeless. I reverted to 27.50, which work fine... E.
  8. Happens to me when I play in hi resolution (1200-960), and full antialiasing (TI4400 card). Seems like the Hands and Faces textures don't load. Anyone saw that and found a way out?

No, no custom faces. And it comes and goes. It maybe something related to frame management: I play in hi resolution, and had increase the "required frame rates" in the OFP Preferences (did not quite know what it did, so why not?). I have the impression that it is less frequent/disappeared now that I have lowered the "Drop Down" setting in Preferences down to 2x... Could it be the Drop Down, which "drops down" the skin textures? Weird...

    Ofp will not start!

You are using 28.32 drivers from NVidia. I did the same mistake after one of those hardware upgrades, and also had my game freezing in the intro screen no matter what. I then spend an entire week doing everything I coud think doing to a PC, without seeing the light. Then, I changed back my NVidia drivers to the version on my CD-Rom (27.50). And the problem disappeared & everything is cool now, 2 days before Resistance comes on the shelves. Trust me, it works... Eric PS: Codemaster user support is dedicated, but is not aware of this bug (dedicated but not very insightful if you asked me), and I had postings on this site for days, no-one ever suggested this solution. rePS: I guess you know how to reinstall new video card drivers, but there is ony one clean & tedious way to do it...
  11. Took me an entire week to figure it out. Configuration is Athlon 1800+ & Via Chipset (see my previous post on the subject).
  12. I had OPF from the first days and went without trouble through the first campaign (Cold War Crisis), the second one (Red Hammer), and went thereon with much merry playing. Then, the s. hit the fan. Slightly lengthy story, hold on. 1. Background I recently purchased an MSI GeForce 4 TI4400 with 128 MB DDR to replace my aging GeForce 2MX. Still no problem at all with OPF. I had some graphic issues with Falcon (Microprose with SP3 patch), which I set to resolve. Forums were suggesting that it had to do with Anisotropy and Antialiasing. I upgraded my GeForce Drivers to the latest official ones (28.32) following the lengthy procedure of uninstalling the active ones, cleaning the disk & registry from all references to Nvidia, rebooting and installing the default VGA card drivers on reboot, then installing the up-to-date drivers. Then, I played with the parameters of the TI 4400 with RivaTuner, and achieved perfect graphics on Falcon after much perusing all specialised forums and quite some trials. However, at this point, Falcon was systematically freezing after a few minutes of play. I tried to reclean & reinstall the Nvidia drivers, reset all parameters to default, but it did not help. I then tried to uninstall & reinstall Falcon, but the SP3 Patch was then failing to apply (Microsoft C++ Runtime error). 2. OPF problem discovered: systematic failure And then, I found that Operation Flashpoint (Version 1.46, having been upgraded through all versions) was also systematically locking after the Menu Page (Missions, Campaign, Setup…) had loaded and a few seconds of Video had played. 3. Resolution attempts unsuccessful I tried to reset Nvidia parameters to default, to run OPF Config to “automatic preferences†(no T&L), played with various settings of AntiAliasing & Anisotropy (from none to full…). I tried to install it on my external Hard Drive, then back on the root drive. I tried to set the Windows Swap File to Manual & 1000. No way. This had never happened before and, pooled with the failure of FS4 SP3 to reinstall, I thought I had screwed up something in Windows during my fooling around. I uninstalled Operation Flashpoint and Falcon (with Windows Utility), deleted all files, cleaned the registry of all references, reinstalled Windows 98SE on top of my previous 98SE installation. I then further cleaned disks and registry with Norton Utilities, and set to reinstall OPF & Falcon. Falcon installed OK, and now runs perfectly (no freezes, optimal image with all details to max…) and very smoothly. However, I am still stuck with OPF which freezes systematically after a few seconds of Intro Video. I tried to uninstall and reinstall OPF 4 times: twice V1 (retail version) then V3/Red Hammer, then V1.46, once V1; then V2, then V3/Red Hammer then V1.46; and finally only V1. I tried it while quitting all background applications (no antivirus, no PGP, no Cougar loader app etc…). No change: still same systematic freezes. All my installs were naturally made with antivirus inactive (Norton). Meanwhile, both Falcon & IL2 Sturmovik work flawlessly. I want to point out that the only difference between when OPF was working & now is the update in the Nvidia drivers and the tweaking of the Card parameters. I am aware that I have PGP and a virtual CDRom software both active, but I had them for years and it never clashed with OPF. I’ve spend days trying to troubleshoot the system, and I am getting desperate… Thanks a lot. PS: My config is: ·     Athlon 1800+ ·     512 Mo RAM ·     SB Audigy sound card ·     MSI G4TI4400 with 128 MO DDR ·     Win 98SE .     DX8.1 ·     TM Cougar joystick & throttle
  13. OK. Solved that one. Took me a week. It is 28.32 drivers from NVidia which conflict. 27.50 work fine!!! Will teach me to try to upgrade systematically to latest version... E.
  14. Today, I tried to reinstall again, after having uninstalled PGP and removed all virtual CD drives (two things I had for months and that never caused any problem with OFP when it was running OK). I tried to install & run from my CD-ROM drive, with D: as drive letter (i.e. the first of the roster). Again, same thing. The intro video freezes after a few seconds, at the Menu page. Hopeless... CodeMasters, can you help?
  15. Thanks. I did not know that. However, mine is set to 3 (default, I think). And my other D3D applications work very well. So it must be something else. But what... E.
