  1. I have an 8800 GTS (320mb, evga), and was using the 97.92 drivers that came with the card.... I was getting the abysmal frame rates and texture issues that I see all over the place (missing textures, screwy geometry, little black boxes, i had it all from time to time)... put these on today and have been able to up the detail AND gotten an increase in performance. Plus, I haven't had any of those graphical problems as of yet, although I'll reserve final judgement for a day or two. I will tentatively say that these drivers are vastly improved, just for the fact that I don't need to put shaders or textures on Low anymore. Your mileage may vary , as usual with ArmA... tounge2.gif

  2. Wow, I hope that removing Starforce is a viable option... good luck getting it to work (hopefully it doesn't cause your ArmA to start thinking it's an illegal copy or something).

I also hope they really DO fix that helicopter bug, because I've been wanting to be able to spot soft targets for AH-6's for a while; didn't realize until today that they won't fire AT ALL. (I thought they were just too stupid to line up the shot wink_o.gif )

Finally, I hope these addons work when I get home; they look great . I assume this is everything required? Sorry I'm a bit of an OFP/ArmA noob; but I really was disappointed that the Bradley's that I knew and loved from OFP weren't even in ArmA, and I can't wait to get them back in action...

  3. I've noticed this too. Also, when using the laser designator, looking around at buildings in cities can cause weird shadow shifts/anomalies and stuff... I think it's really just because there isn't any hardware on earth equipped to deal with the sheer number of different things this game is trying to render at once.. when shadows overlap this problem really becomes pronounced for me, although since setting shadow quality to Very High Ihaven't noticed the problem as much - can't say either way as of yet. OFP Elite does things like this to me with decals; the ground after a heavy rocket barrage looks like a disco hall on bad acid.

  4. Those articles are pretty neat, but I'm hoping they write some new ones here soon; the info there currently is still pretty basic.

The way I like to deal with the AI in my squad is basically the same way I handle it in OFP (seems OFP's campaign encouraged it more): assign color codes to different fireteams/vehicle crews. Then, as long as you're on foot, you can hold space and use the mouse to give orders to the groups in about 3 seconds. The one thing that irritates me is that when you're mounted in a vehicle, holding space functions differently (giving commands to your vehicle only), and I can't figure out how to give orders to a color coded fireteam except by using the F-keys to select the members individually (this is pretty clumsy and kills immersion for me, F-keys are out of the way and not commonly used; plus, every time I hit F8 it puts my TrackIR in low-resolution tracking mode). Does anybody know if there's a way to get that OFP-style command menu (complete with entries for vehicles and color coded fireteams) when mounted?

  5. I thought the HDR in ArmA was subdued and tasteful, just as I thought the same for Oblivion, but apparently many are more sensitive to these things (I guess?)... However...

If the brightness/fading appears too jerky/unnatural/etc, it might be the onboard color correction in your monitor, if you have such a monitor. My LG 19" LCD display has a feature called "f-engine" which dynamically adjusts color balance, brightness, contrast, and gamma based on the image currently on the screen. When I play non-HDR games, it's great and helps me see, but it's VERY distracting when combined with HDR. Sometimes it goes crazy and even flickers light/dark/light/dark until I look in a different direction in-game.

So just make sure that's not the issue; if you really are referring to the HDR effect then never mind... wink_o.gif

  6. Only one thing I'd like to add in the x1950 vs 8800 debate. True, 8800 as a new card is plagued with driver issues, but anyone with an ATI card will tell you the exact same thing. For example, check the sticky on the troubleshooting page about ATI cards. Well, guess what, the 6.7 catalysts don't work with x1950's, as the 1950 is a completely different/newer GPU. This doesn't make ATI or nvidia worse, per se, but it is a more balanced perspective. My main reason for going with 8800 over the 1950 (hopefully I'm not in for a shock when it arrives, as I just ordered it) is that when I tried a x1950, it was DOA. It froze my PC within minutes of running any 3d game, and the higher the detail settings, the faster it would freeze. Temps on the GPU itself were reporting below 70C, but the voltage regulator module on it was getting blazing hot - it was enough to give me a 1st degree burn on my finger just from touching the heat sink on top of it for about 4 seconds. I looked online, and a LOT of people had this problem. Hundreds of people mention that it's due to the immense PSU demands on the card, but I tried 2 brand new 650w power supplies, one of which was an Antec, and both of which had over 40 Amps on +12v. Maybe my power wasn't "clean" enough. Whatever, it still appears to be a monumental problem. Plus, because of my RMA I lost out on a rebate and have been without a PC for about a week and a half. This certainly makes me biased against the x1950, but I'd hate to see somebody else encounter the same problem who had thought "this couldn't happen to me" ... that was me about 2 weeks ago. Searching for similar problems with 8800 cards yields pretty much nothing, while there were several front-page google results on the x1950 freezing up.

  7. Well, I just wanted to point out that this thread is now 81 pages long, which IMO makes it just about useless for finding any actual information. It's a shame, because when I search the forums for stuff about how hardware works with ArmA, all the threads (relevant ones to my search) have been closed and redirected to this one. What's the point of a search if you then have 80 odd pages to cull? I like forums because they let you find discussions that are RELEVANT, not full of tangents, rants, and in this case topics largely unrelated to my search.

  8. If i'm not mistaken, actually running DOES fatigue your character. Last night I was playing Beaten Dog to stress test my video card, and my friend who was watching said, at the part where the truck brings you and some men back to the second position, run the other way! (Since I'd been getting myself shot) I ran (double tapped the forward key) for about 600m, then stopped. Something weird - my gun was pointed down, and I couldn't get it to aim right. I hit the PRONE key, and my soldier did what I can only describe as a flop onto the ground. It seemed that he was on the verge of complete exhaustion. On the other hand, the weapon thing, at least, might have been a bug ;p

  9. Hey all, this is a question basically about driver usage. I understand from the sticky that there is a handle leak in the latest catalyst drivers which can be avoided with the 6.7 driver. Has anybody had any success running ArmA with the latest Omega drivers? Traditionally I've always gotten equal if not better performance from them, but the latest version claims to be based on Catalyst 7.1. Anybody having performance issues like stuttering on otherwise powerful ATI cards with these?

  10. Well, he already said he was affiliated with Codemasters, so I wouldn't put too much stock in anything he says; although I'll admit he's good at picking at the flaws that exist. Oops, well I'm gonna just fade out of here now.. pistols.gif

  11. Would like to point out that the negative points list post above was pretty much nothing but opinion (well, except maybe for the fact that leaves don't blow... and thank god for that IMO, my cpu can barely cope as is ;p), while this thread is centered around factual differences between OFP and ArmA, so the mods doing something about it is certainly not a bad idea. But anyway, to make MY post relevant:

I don't see why anybody hasn't mentioned this, the one reason that really got me interested in ArmA in the first place,

    TRACKIR.

Come on, there's simply NO other game out there that gives an experience even close right now. Flight sims? Sure, although the hardcore helicopter combat STILL hasn't arrived, and won't for probably at least a couple more months. The fact is, this game has more use of TrackIR than anything out there, not to mention the ONLY use when it comes to tactical shooters. Plus, the idea that 6DoF is in development almost makes me giddy inlove.gif
