  1. I suppose its what you use your PC for. I do zero content creation. Really I am amazed at how good my 3570k is for nearly everything that I do. Would not be upgrading my rig if it were not for Arma. Sold my 2 gtx 970s for AUD700 and used that money to buy a gtx 1080 ti. The card is amazing and for the first time I can have everything on ultra at 1440p. Unfortunately I am bottle necked by the 3570k so based on what i have read here a 7700k or 7740x is the way to go. Arma 3 will not use 6 cores so I see no point in waiting for coffee lake. Having said that I would like to keep the rig for 5 years and see the z370 as a dead end with no upgrade path. People are already saying that Intel is planning a 8 core coffee lake to go with the z390 chipset 2h 2018. There are no guarantees but socket 2066 seems like the safe bet if I need the extra cores in the future. I am betting the future 2066 cpu releases will include coffee lake X and hopefully Ice lake X which should be better for gaming than the current skylake x offerings . Intel seem to keep the HEDT sockets alive for much longer. The x299 chipset will most likely die when PCIE gen 4 comes round. Not willing to wait any longer but I would like an upgrade path. z270 is EOF. z370 will have very little life. z390 is the one to get but wait is too long. The 7740x will be on par with the 8700k in arma performance and from what I read over-clocks like a champ. People are running those chips at 5.4 stable. No way will a 6 core coffee lake do that. Single thread performance is what ARMA likes and for what I need today the 7740x will provide. If i need a 8 core chip in the future then socket 2066 will provide that. Going with a delidded cpu based on the apex mother board review. Skip to 16:30. Not really worried as silicon lottery offer a 1 year warranty and the CPU cost me USD309. Really I don't know anything about hardware and am just blurting out stuff that I have read, trying to find the best solution for my needs. When arma finally supports more cores then I will jump ship and get more cores. I just don't see the need at the moment.
  2. My dream ARMA system is looking like this: 7740x delidded (currently with silicon lottery) 3200 corsair ddr4 16 gb (Purchased) samsung evo 500gig m2 (Purchased) 1080ti ftw (already in system) Asus rampage apex x299 VI (not ordered yet) 850 corsair AX (already in system) Have seen a few more coffee lake benchmarks and it really does look like kabylake ipc with 2 more cores. Hopefully will be able to upgrade CPU in 2 or 3 years to 6 core if there is a need on socket 2066. Now I just need to find something else to blame other than system performance when missing shots.
  3. Personally I am going to wait for 8700k benchmarks. If it turns out that its just another kaby with 2 extra cores and not much ipc gain then I will get the 7740x with a decent mother board. The z370 will have no upgrade path and planning to keep the rig for 5 years. I am banking that when arma 4 gets released in 2 years time then I can get a coffee lake x or hopefully a 10nm cpu on socket 2066. Socket 2066 is new and should support at least 2 gens of CPus. Don' really need the extra cores yet. Coming from a 3570k
  4. 8700k benchmark. Seems like very little single thread performance increase compared to 7700k http://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/cpu-intel_core_i7_8700k-763
  5. Nobody knows but on August 21st intel unveiled the coffee lake notebook sku's. Actually they told us nothing about anything but the fat cow in the background of the stream was holding a cup with an October date so everyone assumes that is when they will officially present the desktop sku's. Desktop will most likely be showcased in October so we wont see them till November/December. I do not play anything else than arma so that is why im leaning towards the 4 core 7740k. If they ever come out with Arma 4 then maybe it will use more cores. The 8700k will be released with the z370 chipset which is just a re badged z270. So if you buy on release people are saying you have invested in EOL chipset. The real coffee lake chipset is the z390 which we wont get our hands on till next year. I really doubt the 8700k will be any better than the 7740k in Arma. Other things for sure but not Arma. New egg has a deal for a 7740k and gigabyte aorus gaming 3 full 2066 motherboard for USD 499 at the moment. The current skylake x chips are not so good for gaming but hopefully intel will keep this socket going for at least another generation of cpus. They might fix the whole mesh latency thing in a future coffee lake x. So im thinking there is an upgrade path if i need more cores in the future. What im looking for is a cpu that will not bottleneck my GPU and I can play the game in all its glory at 1440p. . I just want a very solid build for Arma nothing else. I will be happy then.
  6. Thanks all for the great thread. Looks like coffee lake desktop announcement will be out in October. So we will see the 8700k in nov-dec. Personally I am on the fence on waiting for the 8700k. I am currently using a 3570k with a 1080ti. Been waiting ages for coffee lake but really don't see the point. All I do is play arma. No 3d stuff only word and check email . I really am considering just getting a 7740X. Seems to me that the 8700k will not overclock as well (hit 5.3 on single core) and from what I understand arma loves single core performance. The 8700k will have minimal IPC improvement as groove c pointed out. What do I need those 2 extra cores for? People say its a waste to go socket 2066 but gigabyte has a board just for kaby-x. Do you guys think 8700k will be worth the wait?
