Video card drivers keep crashing.

Recommended Posts

yes, I do need my own CTD topic!

When playing games sometimes my video card drivers crash (screen hanging, going black, flashing, and then either continue normally or reboot the system). When alt-tabbing out of the game Windows pops up a balloon it has "restored" the video card drivers (good boy!) and you can play for perhaps ten second before the problem occurs again.

However:

In ArmA 1.02 I did not have this problem. once I patched to the 1.02 hotfix, however, it was suddenly there. Re-installing and patching to the originel 1.02 did not remove the problem.

in ArmA the problem is just there, matter of time.

in The Sims 3 It occurs only on some area's of the large map, or when creating a new family. I can play for hours but when I get to "work" (military base, ghehe) it will crash in a few minutes.

in TES: Oblivion the problem seldom occurs i.i.r.c.

Something that *might* put you on a good path here is the fact the DVI connector on my monitor died: Result was that with a DVI cable, the monitor would display the BIOS / windows loading screens, but would give a "signal missing" when the Windows logon screen should pop up. the "Standard VGA drivers" could be used as a workaround.

Now what I did was install a DVI-to-VGA adapter between my card and a VGA cable so I could use the VGA connector of my monitor as a "solution".

Could this "change" of signal type be the cause? or is my monitor (stupid Acer) just failing on me? and could it cause my video card drivers to crash? I'd like to hear the thoughts of some experienced guys before I whack out a few hundred euro's for a new monitor.

Thanks in advance,

Dennis
