What's the deal with the comms? Can you just buy a headset, plug it in and chat away?

Yes

Default [Caps Lock] key to push to speak (double tap leaves it on permanenently, double tap again turns it back to push to talk if you do it by accedent)

Use default [<] and [>] keys to change channel.
