Jerky gameplay online

Recommended Posts

My game runs great offline witht his new rig -

Dual core 6700

800 GTX

2 GB RAM

3 MB broadband

Online though the gameplay is never smooth.

When soldiers, vehicles etc move they appear every couple of feet, just disappearing and not smooth.

I get good FPS - always 50+ even in woods, long distance viewing etc.

Obviously the problem is with the netcode!

Still this game is buggy even years after the orignal OFP was released.

I cannot understand how they still release a game with so many bugs in still.

Looking at the fixes for 1.08 and previous the game was riddled with bugs.

Does anyone have a smooth play online without players jerking and when they walk?

Andy

yes, no problems here.... smooth as silk on the right servers.

There are a lot more factors that influence lag and desync than plain netcode... considering the server I play on rarely experiences any of it, then It sounds more like you're joining the wrong server or your own net connection is a bit shoddy.

3mb broadband - who with? Different suppliers (i assume you're in the uk?) have different bandwidths and peak times etc. When you're next on a server check your desync and your bandwidth.

Busy servers will of course create more desync oppurtunities as the server tries to manage all the inputs from the different clients and transmit them to the other clients etc etc... Also we found that JIP can cause desync/lag spikes for a few seconds as people join, seemingly because the server has to work harder to transmit all the info of the mission so far - on evo servers this can be fairly hefty the further into the game you are.

rule out the possibilities before jumping to conclusions of netcode - I play on the VOLCBAT public server and have had smooth play with 30 people on, and the server is locked (to prevent people trying to join the server and spike the lag/desync while they do) - Jump on that server and see how it fares, as thats the only benchmark I have to compare with

Hi cosmicdance

My ArmA in MP runs as smooth as silk.

This sounds like it is either your end or you logging on to a laggy server.

To reduce your chance of logging on to a laggy server

Select to view by number of users in the MP browser, popular servers tend to have good connections but there are some caveats to that:

Always check the ping of the server you are going to. Green is good, orange is fine, red is probably someones personal computer running on a 56k modem halfway round the other side of the world, or an oversubscribed server with too many clients, leave them alone.

Generaly when selecting a server, choose one that is in your part of the world, go by continent, unless you have a realy good broadband connection.

Some questions for if it is your end

Are you sure you have got a broadband connection or are you using a dial up modem? biggrin_o.gif  joke

Have you checked your computer for viruses and spyware?

Run a virus/trojan and anti spyware check. If you use IRC many IRC clients are prone to attack by script kiddies wanting to set up a bot army.

Is your firewall working correctly?

Check that your firewall is not interfering with ArmA or blocking any ports ArmA uses, see the BIKI and your firewall logs and manual.

Watch out for other programs running at the same time as ArmA that use an internet connection for updates, make sure your windows update takes place at a time that will not interfere with your game play. I have been caught by that one a couple of times.

Check to see what else is using your bandwidth with something like NetLimiter.

Kind Regards walker

I play Red Orchestra and Battlefield 1942 online and never have any problems with lag.

My ISP is Idnet, in the UK, and my pings are always 40 - 80 in games.

With ARma I always connect to green servers that ping around 30 - 40.

It is reassuring to hear that people get smooth gameplay online as this is the ONLY thing that spoils the game for me.

It is a great game other than the lag online I get.

I have setup the firewall on the router OK and have no viruses, spyware etc.

I will try some other servers in my country to see if I can get a smooth experience.

Thanks for all your fast replies, great to see the enthusiasm for this good game.

Andy

ping really isn't the do or die of smooth gameplay - I've played austrailian servers with pings of 500 - yet still smooth gameplay - desync and bandwidth is normall the bug bare.

Never heard of IDnet, and reading their website sales pitch they seem fine - The smaller and more unusual broadband companies rent their bandwidth off BT and then sell it on to you, thus alot of them are fine for viewing websites etc, but once its strained, or 6/7pm comes along and half the country logs on, it turns into a pile of steaming... well you get the idea.

What times do you normally play? If you're bored on evening, perhaps stay up that little bit later and check how things go in the dead of night

I will certainly try logging into a game in the early hours, to see if it is any better.

Never had any lag at all in any other games with Idnet but I do appreciate all the suggestions and look forward to trying them out.

Idnet are a small company that I have been with since last September, after moving from the nightmare of Orange.

They have always provided a fast, reliable connection and I can definitely recommend them, even at peak times.

hehe - orange are one of those rent a bandwidth companies - I stray as far away from them as possible.

its strange that its ok for other games then - the best test will be a server later in the evening, but of course make sure its fairly populated so that your connection has something to do.

i have the exact same problem

has anyone found a solution

edit

note that i did a bit of research myself and found that i keep getting a portscan attack on port 2302 which from what ive read is the exact port ArmA uses to play, strangely enough the attacking IP is my own and it names my PC as the attacker, i disabled and even uninstalled norton 2007 but it didnt improve it (also note that the attacks only seem to happen while in the ArmA server list)

system specs

intel core2 duo 2x2.93GHZ

2GB Ram

8800GTX  card

running on a 20mb broadband connection

runs SP pretty much flawlessly on highest settigns and ran MP well until recently, nothing significant has changed in my setup that would account for the difference.

any suggestions are welcome
