fer 21 Posted January 4, 2007 Because: a) stringtable.csv is our friend b) and Babelfish is not always our friend I wonder if I could ask our Czech, German, Polish, and Russian-speaking friends for some words and phrases to be translated from English? Conditions Noon Dusk Night Dawn Clear Overcast Storm Light Fog Heavy Fog Debug Mode "Debug mode is on" AI Skill * West Resistance East Civilian Unauthorised Crew "You are not authorised to crew this vehicle" * AI is not always the same in other languages, is it? I'm sure in German the acronym for AI is something different? Many thanks in advance for any contributions (full credits to go in the eventual relase of this thing ...). - Fer <TZW>
Donnervogel 0 Posted January 4, 2007 Generally it's a bit hard to do word by word translation out of context. Because there aren't always 1 to 1 translations with the exact same meaning(s). It would really help to know the exact contexts of the words (like see a picture or video how it is used). English - German Conditions - "Bedingungen" (more precisely "Wetterbedingungen" if but if it's too long the first word is just fine.) Noon - Mittag Dusk - Abenddämmerung (if it's too long just use "Abend" meaning evening. I think people would figure what is meant.) Night - Nacht Dawn - Morgendämmerung (if it's too long just use "Morgen" meaning morning. I think people would figure what is meant.) Clear - klar Overcast - bewölkt Storm - Gewitter (didn't think of this before but I think this is the best word - meaning tempest - like with thunder, lightning and heavy rain. As Storm, at least in German refers more to heavy Winds. And since ArmA doesn't simulate such weather I think you're looking for "Gewitter".) Light Fog - leichter Nebel Heavy Fog - dichter Nebel Debug Mode - Debug-Modus "Debug mode is on" - "Debug-Modus eingeschaltet" AI Skill - "KI-Fähigkeit" West - Westen Resistance - Widerstand East - Osten Civilian - Zivilisten Unauthorised Crew - "unautorisierte Besatzung" "You are not authorised to crew this vehicle" - "Sie sind nicht zur benutzung dieses Fahrzuegs autorisiert"
fer 21 Posted January 4, 2007 Hi Donnervogel, Many, many thanks for your contribution! Generally it's a bit hard to do word by word translation out of context. Because there aren't always 1 to 1 translations with the exact same meaning(s). It would really help to know the exact contexts of the words (like see a picture or video how it is used). You're quite right - apologies, I should have put some notes in regarding the context of each word and phrase. English - German Conditions - most likely it's "Bedingungen" for what you seem to use it, conditions as the state of objects can also be "Zustände", there are also some more possibilities. 'Conditions' in this instance refer to weather conditions (used during a mission set-up). Noon - Mittag Dusk - Abenddämmerung Night - Nacht Dawn - Morgenrot or Morgendämmerung (the first specificly refers to the red sky in the morning - so if that is the case it should be the preferred choice) Morgendammerung seems the more precise word, but it's long (and this is going to be used in a list on the set-up screen). Would most german-speakers understand 'Morgenrot' as a synonym for 'Dawn'? Clear - klar Overcast - bewölkt Storm - Sturm (as an adjective "stürmisch" - and I think this would be preferred but again it's a question of context) Again, the context is weather conditions, specifically combinations of the terms 'Noon', 'Midnight' etc. and 'Clear', 'Storm'. With that in mind, I suppose 'Sturm' would be appropriate. Light Fog - leichter Nebel Heavy Fog - dichter Nebel Debug Mode - Debug-Modus (I think debug shouldn't be translated as people that use such features ususally know what "debug" means. But a suitable translation would be "Fehlersuchmodus") Agree with you that keeping the term 'debug' in English may be the best option, as it is widely understood. "Debug mode is on" - "im Debug-Modus" (depending on context there could be some better possibilities too and if you want to use Fehlersuchmodus instead of Debug-Modus then it's "im Fehlersuchmodus") Context would be a hint or sidechat to informt the player that the debug mode has been engaged. AI Skill - "KI-Fähigkeit" West - Westen Resistance - Widerstand East - Osten Civilian - Zivilisten (hard to tell if the plural is suited. Depending on context the singular "Zivilist" could be necessary or the adjective "zivil" ) The context for 'civilian' is to place it in a selection list with other 'sides', such as 'west' etc. - what would make sense? Unauthorised Crew - "unautorisierte Besatzung" "You are not authorised to crew this vehicle" - "Sie sind nicht zur benutzung dieses Fahrzuegs autorisiert" Again, these would be in messages that appear in hints of sidechats. - Fer <TZW>
Serclaes 0 Posted January 4, 2007 [...] Noon - Mittag Dusk - Abenddämmerung Night - Nacht Dawn - Morgenrot or Morgendämmerung (the first specificly refers to the red sky in the morning - so if that is the case it should be the preferred choice) Morgendammerung seems the more precise word, but it's long (and this is going to be used in a list on the set-up screen). Would most german-speakers understand 'Morgenrot' as a synonym for 'Dawn'? [...] Dawn is more a synonym to Morgendämmerung when you mean the time of dawn. So, as you say, Morgendämmerung would fit better.
messiahua 0 Posted January 4, 2007 Russian Conditions - Погода Noon - Полдень Dusk - Сумерки Night - Ночь Dawn - Рассвет Clear - Безоблачно Overcast - Прогноз Storm - Шторм Light Fog - Лёгкий туман Heavy Fog - Сильный туман Debug Mode - Режим отладки "Debug mode is on" - "Включён режим отладки" AI Skill - Навык ИИ West - Запад Resistance - Сопротивление East - Восток Civilian - Гражданские Unauthorised Crew - I don't understand meaning of this. Where is it used? "You are not authorised to crew this vehicle" - "Вы не имеете права управлять этой машиной" OHH GREAT! This forums messed up everything! As you see I can't write cyrillic here. fer 21 Posted January 4, 2007 @ Gaia - Many thanks for this! Czech** I fear I misunderstood meaning of "Unauthorised Crew" - when will this text appear? This message appears when a player attempts to pilot / drive / command / act as gunner for a specific vehicle which s/he does not have authorisation to use. For example: a player is in the role of a Sniper, but attempts to pilot a helicopter. This message will flash up, and the player is ejected from the helicopter (note that it would be fine if the sniper is trying to get in as a passenger). Does that make sense? - Fer <TZW>

fer 21 Posted January 4, 2007 Thank you all for your very kind help - if I can ask for a few more words please? Difficulty Super High Medium Low Insane Hard Easy Random The context is for selecting a level of difficulty. BTW, you may be wondering what this is all for. I can't post about it for the moment, but some information will be forthcoming soon(ish). All contributors so far will, of course, be fully credited! Again, thank you for your responses. Perhaps we need to set up a standing group of translators? Or an online lexicon for standard words (like the ones which you have translated so far)? Might be useful for encouraging more mission designers to use stringtable.csv ... Many thanks, - Fer <TZW>

fer 21 Posted January 5, 2007 The second group of words is used to select the level of difficulty for a mission, or the level of skill for AIs. For example: AI Skill: |-- Super |-- High |-- Medium |-- Low |-- Random Difficulty: |-- Insanse |-- Hard |-- Medium |-- Easy |-- Random

FireflyPL 0 Posted January 5, 2007 The second group of words is used to select the level of difficulty for a mission, or the level of skill for AIs. For example: Polish AI Skill: - Zdolność SI |-- Super - Super |-- High - Wysoka |-- Medium - Åšrednia |-- Low - Niska |-- Random - Losowa Difficulty: - Trudność |-- Insane - Szalona |-- Hard - Ciężka |-- Medium - Åšrednia |-- Easy - Åatwa |-- Random - Losowa Ps. In difficulty group i transladed it exactly from English, so this may not suit well to your project (whatever it is). In case, something won't sound well in beta stage, I can correct translations.
