AI shooting chopper?

Recommended Posts

did a little test on Rhamadi yesterday:

UH60(MG) with S&D-Waypoint against 2 inf-squads(East) + BMP. All soldiers were targeting chopper, but no shots were fired at the Blackhawk. In OFP this could be solved by editing 3 values in units config file...

UH60 was firing shots rarely with its minigun, might be caused by chopper approching targets directly so that targets couldn't be targeted by side-mounted guns...?

All units were set to high experience (sliders full right)....

BTW: can harriers taxi out of hangars (i didn't get AI to do it)

In one of the campaign missions (where you retake Corazol) after you finished off the shilkas, cobras appear and should eliminate the tanks there.

I played the mission quite a lot (as I never succeeded in finishing it...) and sometimes both Cobras were shot down. I'm not quite sure if it was due to the BMPs, the Tanks (with MG) or infantry with AA, but it surely wasn't Shilkas.

Machinegunners and AA units do engage helos.

Helos do engage infantry with unguided rockets, cannnons and miniguns extensively. Tested with all armed Arma helos.

You may want to try to use a search&destroy waypoint for the helos.

They do, but they will automatically taxi to runway and take off.

Tested on Sahrani.

If you want to have them just drive out of the hangar, place a trigger activated by plane at your desired stop-point and use planename setfuel 0 in OnActivation.

There is a little hight difference with hangar and ground so the plane will look a bit bumpy when rolling out of it.

Moving it to Mission Editing ?

I found it very difficult to get AI AA guys to fire at a chopper. I had to get the chopper stationary above them for about 30 seconds before they would engage.

They constanty stood and watched a chopper fly past at about 200 meters.

I gave up on the AI and used a shilka to do the job. icon_rolleyes.gif

I find it extremely hard for choppers to attack soft targets, especially if they dont fire back.

Ran a test where I had a squad of opfor stroll from one end of Rahmadi to the other, set on 'careless, hold fire, limited'. I then put a cobra with max skills and 'search & destroy, open fire target at will, combat' and it didn't fire a single shot. The target squad actually made it to the other end of the island.

However, if the squad does fire back, then the AI seems to suddenly wake up and think 'omg lets use our guns/rockets' and proceeds to take meaningful action.

I've had this problem in OFP and I really expected it to be fixed in ArmA.

It seems to depend a bit on targets armor value, I found AI just loves to shoot at AH/MH-6 but it more reluctant to target better armored helos.

I was able to get 2 Antiaircraft AI set on expert skill level to fire at a passing Blackhawk using waypoints, with mixed results.

The target(BH) was passing an island where the two AI where located, on route to another location.

for timing events together, I used a MOVE waypoint to get the AI to the SEEK AND DESTROY waypoint, at which I made them :

open fire, engage at will

behavior - combat

speed - full

formation - column

Mixed results are that sometimes both AI would fire and hit the chopper(destroying it), sometimes neither would fire , but most times one missle would hit the chopper, and that is what I was aiming for  wink_o.gif

I hope this helps, for I am kinda new to scritping things myself. In the past I would just ask Zombie to do it for me.   tounge2.gif
