lukemax 0 Posted January 7, 2006 Hi all Im wondering what tool is used to make the maps that are imported into WRP EDIT/WRP tool and if so is there a versian that has a Europe/world map avalible for that software. I have been pointed to places where you have to pay a mad price for actual real world locations so i dont want to be steered back there. Thx Lukemax
llauma 0 Posted January 7, 2006 Just browse through the Visitor forum and I'm sure you'll find all the answers you need. Terragen and Wilbur are a few of the tools.
lukemax 0 Posted January 7, 2006 Ok ill have a good snoop, anyone know any particular places to go? I did once see some people working on a mini austrailia map for OFP, might contact them see how they did it.

cell7 0 Posted January 7, 2006 All they did was find a map of Australia and save it as a 512x512 pxl, bmp file and opened it in wilbr126. (Be sure the color spectrum is correct, green being the lower ground through to white being the higher ground. Then you save it as a txt file and import it into wrptool. This should be explained in the pdf manual you got with wrptool v.95.

Ok sounds easy enough but what type of Map of europe/world is best to use? as there are so many
cell7 0 Posted January 7, 2006 That depends on you. Search on google for D.E.M maps till you find one you like. Here is one of russia.
lukemax 0 Posted January 7, 2006 http://www.iiasa.ac.at/Research/LUC/GIS/img/dem_eur.jpg that one ok?
cell7 0 Posted January 7, 2006 It's a start. I probrably made it sound to easy in my earlier post. There is still a process to complete first before you can import it into Wrptool. You still need to change the color spectrum and pass it through GeoFrac, Terragen and Wilbur.....So I did that for you. PM me and I will send you the .wrp file. happy late
shinRaiden 0 Posted January 8, 2006 There was an interesting post on the VTP dev mailing list about how that - if properly noise-corrected - SRTM data is technically more accurate that DEM for sphereoid and semi-sphereoid projections. Unfortuantely we're apparently limited to rectangular projections, so the compensation is irrelevant atm. US law requires that a fair portion of the basic data be made available freely, at least US data made with US national assets. There is raw data available for much of the rest of the world - for example I have 40~50% of sphereically projected SRTM Iran elevations at approximately ~90m res stashed somewhere - but there is no obligation to freely provide processed data. In the US, there's two agencies that coordinate GIS data, the NDIA and the USGS. The first does work for military and intelligence, I suppose that's where the 'fun' data is. They're not in the business of publically sharing data. The USGS on the other hand, iirc, is under the Dept. of the Interior, and it's their job to support academic and commercial usage, and get as much data out there as possible. Unfortunately, the SRTM data is noisy, and the disaster known as the SDTS format really clobbered things up so bad, that they effectively abandoned all the processed data, went back to the SRTM signaling, and are converting it all to NED. Furthermore, a lot of the direct data distribution points are closing up (no more direct DLG FTP downloads, DRG's were always scarce. ) due to excessive and exploitive usage. That's why the shift to pay-processed vs free-raw mirrors. So you've got all that exercise just to get elevation data, and we haven't gotten into the reprojection skewing and other fun stuff. Imho, unless you have the assests to complete the whole project (location-specific building models, vector data or aerial imaging for precision placement, and optionally aerial imaging for subsection texturing) it's a pointless exercise to nitpick over a scarcely available location. I have a hard enough time getting free vector data for the US, even VMAP1 is not detailed enough imho. TIGER Census roads data is close, but ideally the best would be DRG's absent of restricted VMAP2/3 content.
