Guest RKSL-Rock Posted October 7, 2005 the community isnt very tollerant with thieves I'd have to disagree with that. While the addon makers are sympathetic the users just don’t give a toss. I think I’m probably more famous for having a go at 'thieves' than most, while i do agree that ODOL Explorer does give the scumbags the tool to steal more easily. But I have to agree with Gnat when he says it allowed him to learn how to make addons better. This argument will probably go on and on for eternity. There is no practical way in the software to stop someone steal our work. But there is a way within the community. When you discover which addons are using stolen stuff - advertise the fact. (Wont make you popular with the Moderators though ) All the major news sites still carry all the pirated addons, even the BIS Newsflash still provides links & credits to stuff that most of the community now accepts as stolen goods. I think that needs to change. Stopping the improvement of ODOLEx inst going stop anything, someone else will just create another tool. At least we know Explorer is out that and we are aware of the issue. With a little bit of support from the news sites and BIS - piracy wouldn’t be an issue any more. My 2 cents
Messiah 2 Posted October 7, 2005 well... perhaps i just hope the community isnt i personally found the news sites to be quite good with piracy - ofp.info and others have readily taken items down that were stolen - we had some of our addons leaked and the news sites refused to put them up - hopefully because they were stolen now... where can i get my grubby mits on this new improved ODOL thingy

I've had to badger 2 of the biggest sites for quite a while to remove my leaked stuff that people have released.  Its really not easy.  I think you were lucky with you're leaked stuff i know other teams havent been so lucky.  i know the Vietnam guys are still seething abou thteir un official release. Baphomet 0 Posted October 9, 2005 Quote[/b] ]decompiling odol p3ds with odolexplorer causes seceral problems.a) smooth/sharpen edges are screwed up. b) selection arent kept properly c) vertices are doubles d) objects are split into several sub-objects e) eventually all faces get deleted and only vertices are left Yeah I figured. Reason (a) was good enough to discourage me from bothering. Quote[/b] ]so those who dont have p3dedit are bascialy forced to cope with those problems or to aks the authors for the original p3d bis has some sample models that are editable you can dwl tehm from the breath site i think after allt that those problems above are quite positive for addon makers. why? because it to some extend prevents theft... and after all its more kind to ask instead of just to take something... Quote[/b] ]You're probably using an older version of OdolEx; the most recent released version does not have problems with selections and double vertices (at least I hadn't any problems).I know only of two problems: - smooth/sharp edges --> bad lighting - User Data for Faces/Vertices --> tank tracks are "shining" at night; tanks are not turning dark from damage Both are reasonly fixable with a small amount of work. Use the object selection tool and select a small part of the model; copy this part into an empty LOD and make sharp edges were the edges are sharp Do the same for the different tank parts: Copy the left tank track into a new LOD and change the User Data accordingly (I think it was 63 for left track). Do the same for the other parts (look into the Tank-Config for correct values for UserData). The same goes for Muzzles; change the UserData to 0, as OdolEx produces a 1 and therefore the muzzle doesn't shine. Meh... Well I'm not trying to take anything, there's nothing in the community in that respect I really want that I can't/haven't already modified for my own use. Anyhow. I think that ODOL models are the way to go. I wish more addonmakers would ODOL their models since it's supposed to optimize them for better performance. I didn't see any BIS mlod weapon models however. Only the man, and vehicles. I don't want to make addons, I haven't the time. Too busy and it's just one of those things I'm not really good at. I just want something that will improve my personal OFP experience. Really, it's the AK and the VZ.58 I have a problem with. They're too small it seems. It looks like the soldier is carrying a toy gun. I just want them bigger. Â I'd pay someone to make addons that I want, I mean really. It's too much hassle for me to do it on my own. I'm changing jobs soon, my new job will pay much more, only I'll be out of town a lot. I know a lot of guys who like to do 3d modeling, perhaps I can convince them with a monetary incentive when I get some extra cash. I could compensate them to learn all the ins and outs of Oxygen while I'm out working, and possibly have a working model that I just need to write a cpp for when I get back.
