Build your own Cruise Missile

Recommended Posts

The civilian GPS satellites have a built-in error. This reduces the accuracy of the GPS Satellites greatly.

Civillian GPS's are accurate up to 3 meters.

Indeed, that selective availability system was disabled in 2000 in order to make civilian gps more attractive.

On the other hand I sure hope they made it so that it can be quickly switched back if some kind of trouble would arise. crazy_o.gif

Anyways, I think the missile man's point should be taken. While it may seem far fetched, this sort of attack is very possible. Yes, Car bombs may be as effective and simpler 90% of the time, but every now and then there may be a tempting terrorist target that would not be acessible to a car bomb. And after all, who'da thunk that a few Mujahedin would have taken piloting lessons to fly into the WTC, when they could have just tried a car bomb again?

The WTC incident was the excact opposite of this. Low-tech suicide mission. All they needed was bare minimum training and some 5 dollar box cutters.

Whilist no, the threat a DIY cruise missile has on creating destruction is minimal, it could certainly create death.

Imagine one of these things, set up to release a 'biological spray' once it reaches a certain waypoint. It'd have a relatively low radar signature, compared to say, a crop duster; there'd be very few defenses prepared to counter it, and if set up right, could be programmed to fly straight down the middle of a city street, close to the ground, spraying whatever onto the helpless people below.

The GPS 'code', as such, has been cracked by civilians. Surveyors have GPS total station backpacks that are as accurate as the US military can get. Though these things cost a hell of alot of money to obtain..... there isn't much that a crafty theif couldn't obtain for free minus his troubles, if he knew he was looking for.

Add that these things could be launched without detection, or traced back to it's launch point, and you bet your bottom dollar, this is a very real threat, which is very difficult to counter.

How about the low-low-low budget version ?

fest-luftballon.jpg

Filled with the right agent and equipped with a simple needle and a little tincan which alters it´s shape with the changing airpressure you have a number one method to deliver chemical or biological agents over a huge region. You just need to listen to the weather report and there you go crazy_o.gif

Wonder why this hasn´t been tried yet.

Just did a little pricecheck. For 5000 Dollar you can get more than 20.000 balloons.

I guess noone would hinder you if you position yourself at the city center of a bigger town and do a mass start of balloons.

Wait a minute...

*walks into 21st century*

Ahh, that's better.

However, I still don't think this is practical. The size of the warhead is much too small to be of any good to the terrorists. These guys want to kill as many infidels as possible, they are not going to waste time and money developing a weapon that can only do a little bit of damage.

from the first link in this thread:

Yes, thankfully this is true. Remember that the object of this project is not to provide a blueprint for would-be terrorists, simply to offer the proof that this type of craft is indeed a practical reality. However, for a more sobering perspective, Reuters reported earlier this year that just 1Kg (2.2lbs) of anthrax spores dispersed over a city of 10 million people could result in over 100,000 deaths, despite the use of antibiotics. I saw a TV program, someone done this, but a bit fancier (Basicly altimeter, and soleniods that droped balast, and little microprocessor), can't really remeber much about it (It was on a ~year ago), but it would be pretty easy (Compared to building your own cruise missile) to make a balloon carrying a chemical/biological wepaon pretty far.. It'd be pretty much impossible to track (Just a general direction, by using weather/wind info, but thats about it), and as has been said, theres some nasty chemicals about

A few people with enough determination could do something like that no bother, as I severly doubt any country invests much in anti-balloon defences.. tounge2.gif
