Maximum number of addons???

seems if i go over about 80 addons, the game crashes to desktop immediately. if i remove a seemingly random group of addons to get under 80 total, the game works. am i dreaming?

The number of addons OFP can handle has been discussed in some length previously. It varies from PC to PC.

I recommend searching around for existing threads.

Also, try the "-nomap" extension on your OFP shortcut - this allows OFP to only load addons as needed, instead of loading all addons at startup. This usually solves the problem.
