Battalion give orders to companys and companys to squads (sorry about some mistakes but i'm not don't know the army command line very well). So later in the game you will be promoted and you don't have to take a part to fighting: you have to plan the offensive/defence. Because all wouldn't like this there should be a option to not be promoted too much and you will only be a squad leader. And if you like you would be able to go to battlefield but you would have to stay little bit of cover or else you would be the target number one to enemy snipers.
