Multiplayer temporary freezes

when i am hosting a server or have joined one, after an indeterminate period of time the game locks up, sometimes for five seconds, sometimes not even for one second.

this proves to be a real spoiler to any long term enjoyment. it has never happened while ive been offline or hosting a server with nobody else connected.

i did not have this problem before i installed direct X 9. i run HW T&L and doubt it is a problem with my PC's specifications as i had no issues before installing DirectX9. plus i have experienced it in both 16 and 32 bit, T&L on and off, even with earlier Detonator Drivers for my 32mb geforce 2 mx.

it might not be the new directX, but nothing else has been changed as far as my system goes. i run winME.

please bear in mind that i have never had a problem with OFP before this, so it seems to be more software based than hardware based, as no other applications behave in this manner, and i have more graphically intensive games than OFP.

still no fix, ive tried reinstalling drivers and the game itself, next week i get a geforce 4, so perhaps that might fix it, but really, i didnt have a problem before installing directX so perhaps it is software based after all.

any theories appreciated.

additionally, i now cannot reinstall Resistance, it has a problem copying one of the Data.pbo files.

i have tried the pci latency patch, no luck, disabling DMA also heralded zero improvements.

wonder if what is stopping me from installing resistance is also contributing to OFP's freezing.

note that i havnt had any other problems with any other games.. ever before.. its crazy.

after further testing, ive discovered that i do not get freezes at MINIMUM detail and maximum framerate setting, using in game option tweaks.. the moment i raise the detail even to 2, i get very brief freezes.

this is bizarre, as i experienced no graphical anomalies before this date, and havnt changed my hardware.

also it only happens online, perhaps there is a driver that deals with network connection/server-client protocol that is conflicting with new drivers somewhere?

again, any theories welcome.

the problem has now been fixed, it seems that when i installed an earlier version of the nvidia detonator drivers, i no longer had the game freezes.

trouble is, for anyone else having this prob, the freezes didnt happen until i installed directx 9, even though i had the 41.09 detonator drivers for at least two weeks before any freezes appeared. so i guess its something to do with dx9 and those drivers, plus winME and maybe a little bit of geforce 2 mx thrown in for good measure.

bit of a mess but sorted now by downgrading drivers.. joyjoy.

Its been a while, and ive now discovered that freezing occurs only when i have Sounds and Multimedia properties set to my sound chip (VIA Onboard)

when both recording and playback are set to Game Compatible Device (in control panel) i cannot transmit or receive Voice over Net but i get no freezing.

With my sound chip selected, however, i cant have VON but i dont have freezes.

as you can see by the above posts, i enjoyed months of trouble free games and now this. any help would be great, im currently trying to choose between the benefits of voice over net and freeze free games.
