Most projectors can take VGA cable (from your video card) and project it. At my old company we had a projector our supervisors used at meetings, etc.

We also had a big white wall and no windows, so after hours I would hook up the projector to my computer and play Need for Speed Porsche on it. It was awesome, total theater experience, although you do need total pitch black darkness and a super-white wall to see it nicely.

At University we had projectors that you could link to your computer. All that determned the image size was distance from screen.

I remember many fun games of Halflife (just out at the time) on the big screen. Im talking BIG screen - cinema size in the main lecture hall (seats 500) it was about 12 Meters wide - (36 foot) and proper height (4:3).

Also DVDs were a new thing when I was at Uni, so we had fun with them too on the big screen.

Couple more questions:

1)Will this cause any lag?

2)Do the pixles strech or is there a more clear picture like for example on a normal monitor, when you look at a soldier 500-600m away... all you see is a 2 dots(1 for upper body and the 2nd one for the legs). When projected will i be able to see more detail of that soldier? or will there just be 2 big dots on the wall  confused.gif

3) Can you use 3D glasses with this?  (please say yes biggrin.gif )

4) Is the picture quality good?

5) should i buy it?

6) Do you know any good ones out there? (quality, cost...)

I am seriously thinking of dedicating one room to OFP  biggrin.gif  and have this big screen with surround sound speakers around my head (and the 3D glasses if possible). This could even be used for some flight sims like:  IL, CFS3...

If anyone else who used this amazing thing, I would like to hear your story.

thanks,

Sgt. Black Knight

A good projector will cost you between $2,000USD to $8,000USD, depending on its resolution, brightness, etc. Not to mention you'll have to replace those super-hot bulbs that take a load of electrical juice to shine.

Depending on the make/model, you will need to resize your video card to a different Hz refresh rate and resolution, other than that there is no lag, why would there be? It's just taking the signal out from your video card and projecting it.

Blacknight:

I used to use my video beamer for video- / PC-Games but since I became heavily addicted to OFP over one year ago I got back to my PC-Monitor, main reason being the sharpness of the picture...

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">2)Do the pixles strech or is there a more clear picture like for example on a normal monitor, when you look at a soldier 500-600m away... all you see is a 2 dots(1 for upper body and the 2nd one for the legs). When projected will i be able to see more detail of that soldier? or will there just be 2 big dots on the wall?<span id='postcolor'>

My beamer has a resolution of 1024 x 768 but imho it's still not enough to create a picture sharp enough (always considering the size of the projection you want to achieve) to play a game like OFP, where you need to spot little dots (heads) surrounded by a few other little dots (bushes). The pixel stretch according to the screen size you choose.

Using the beamer works great for racing games or any other game where you need less "precision" than in OFP.

Of course this depends heavily on the quality of the screen (is it just a white wall or is it a specially coated screen, which is very expensive), the size of the picture (mine is ca. 3.5 m x 2 m, the bigger-the worse), the quality of the beamer (mine was around 4000 €, which is not really much for a beamer), signal quality (impossible to play OFP with pixel artifacts) and so on and so forth.

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">1)Will this cause any lag?<span id='postcolor'>

I am not sure what you mean...if you mean the display switching speed being too slow (like a TFT screen) then the answer is: Maybe! It depends on the beamer, I think modern products are quick enough to play action games, mine is.

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">3)Can you use 3D glasses with this?<span id='postcolor'>

Last time I checked: No! The switching speed of the TFT panels inside the beamer is too slow to use common shutter 3D glasses, which need a high alternating picture frequency to display the different views for each eye. I am sure there are solutions, but I think they are economically out of reach for private use...

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">5) Should I buy it?<span id='postcolor'>

Well...I wouldn't buy one just for playing. Get yourself a 20" TFT monitor instead (again, not if you plan to use 3D-glasses)

But if you have ANY interest in watching movies you should definitely get one if you can afford it! Combined with a nice Dolby Digital sound setup you can enjoy your personal cinema in great quality while smoking a funny cigarette to enhance the experience... wow.gif just an example...

I can only suggest to wait until you really WANT one, they get cheaper by the day...

Overall: I am very happy about having one, as long as I need distraction from the triviality of working life I wouldn't want to live without after getting used to it. This could possibly change as soon as I grow mature enough to stop wasting my time playing war games and watching movies of course...

PM me if you have further questions.

I had a JVC D-ILA G10 once (LCD-projector).

It was a killer with OFP on a 80" Screenline screen.

Ran 1280x960 non-interlaced. Now I have a Seleco SVD400 (CRT-projector). The SVD400 projector only supports 800x600. The image ain't as sharp as it was with the JVC, but the colours are comparrable (I would never go back to a LCD/DLP type).

If you want a projector for playing OFP, then I suggest you get a DLP for around 3-4000$

The cheaper ones are never worth the price you pay (they are too crappy). You would also want a projector with no less than 1000 ANSI LUMEN (but preferably no more than 2000 ANSI LUMEN, or the image will be too grey especially during nightmissions). The JVC I had was a 1000 (or was it 1200?) ANSI LUMEN and worked great for a medium-to-dark room.

If you got the money to spend, I suggest a hi-end CRT projector (it project the best image quality nomatter what) ...but they are extremely expensive 10.000+$ (...and they weigh alot.... and you need someone to calibrate it for you if you have'nt done it before)

Yeah, projectors kick ass smile.gif

We (Compsoc) brought one home one evening after giving a Flash tutorial or something in the college and hooked it up to my box.

Watch Ghost in the Shell on it and I played a bit of Crimson Skies (only thing I had lying around) with the joystick.

It was a bit laggy when turning, but was bright enough to playith on a blue painted wall.

I'd seriously consider getting one when I can afford it (4+ years time?).

It was a CTX LCD something or other, 800x600 @ 75hz, not great, but it was on loan and was pretty old.

wow...i wouldn't think they'd be that expensive. Cause thats pretty dang expensive mate.

heh If you guys got the cash to blow, and you want to relax, heck go for it. I would if I had loads of cash. Personally I spend a lot of money on gas and car maintainance so there ain't much room for electronics

Black Knight: If you get that projector in the future bro, I'm gonna be at your house often. You can bet on that.

The best thing to play Flashpoint on would be one of those new High Definition 40+ inch Tv/computer monitors on sale at most tv stores [Circuit City, Best buy ETC.]. I saw part of the Harry Potter movie on DVD on one of things at Best Buy. I drooled over the idea of OFP on one of those babys with 6.1 surround! wow.gif Anyone out there have one of these dream monitors? How does it look with flashpoint? BTW How does 6.1 sound with it?

Uhm OFP don't support 5.1 and 6.1 confused.gif

The best surround in OFP you can get is 4.0 (4-point-surround).
