Setting up a server that uses the Steam browser

Recommended Posts

With the impending end of the Gamespy browser many people will be trying to set up their server to use the Steam browser - as of today only 2 servers show up in the Steam browser!

Here are some tips on how I managed to get one working:

1. You seem to need to use the full Steam app in order to accomplish this - as of today steamcmd seems to not want to install Arma 2 at all, and doesn't seem to be able to patch OA to the latest 1.63 beta (or if it can, I couldn't find the magical combination of appid and so on in order to do so). You obviously need to use a Steam account that has purchased the game(s) that you wish to download the files for. It is not necessary to have the Steam app running on the server in order to run the dedicated server files, just to download them.

2. If you don't already have them, use the Steam app running on the server to download the Arma 2 files.

3. Use the Steam app to install OA on the server (note: you may be able to lessen the download if you already have the files, and and can place them in the correct folders).

4. Once you have the correct OA files on the server you can opt into the beta (Right click game in Library, settings, beta)

This should get you the files at least - you may still have to do some combining of the files in order to get the full funtionality of Arma2 CO to work - see http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?101214-ARMA-2-CO-%28how-to-combine-ARMA-2-into-ARMA-2-OA-and-use-together%29 and http://www.armaholic.com/forums.php?m=posts&q=17099

Once you have done this you should have a functioning 1.63 server that shows up in the ingame Steam browser - note that all your players will have to link their copies of Arma 2 OA to a Steam account in order to upgrade their clients to 1.63 so that they can connect to your new server - see http://www.arma2.com/ for details.

UPDATE:

Now that 1.63 is the default version on Steam you can use Steamcmd to download the files, appids are 33900 for Arma 2 and 33930 for Arma 2 OA.

You still need to use a Steam account that has purchased the games in order to download the files.
