Warin 0 Posted August 25, 2002 Actually, that is a good one I wont close it, as long as the comments stay tasteful. I for one thing pot should be legalized. The prudish right say it's a gateway drug that leads to harder drugs. Fuck that. It's a gateway drug that leads to rampant snacking at 2 am!
Aculaud 0 Posted August 25, 2002 Well, the problem with pot is that it affects everything that comes into contact with the surrounding air. So, you get people smoking it in public, and you'll have other people getting the effects of it against their will, possibly at a very inopportune time. Driving on the freeway, operating heavy equipment, etc. I vote no.

And even then, it's no worse than ONE beer for someone with decent tolerance. Marijauna is far less intoxicating and damaging to ones system than booze is. Wanna know why pot is so frowned on? Nylon Rope. Wanna know the reasoning? During the years 1916-1937, William Randolph Hearst created a yellow journalism campaign to associate hemp with marijuana. Even though smoking hemp, like most fibers, will just make you sick, Hearst, along with his friend Pierre Dupont, succeeded in outlawing hemp in America. They actually robbed the world of an environmental cash crop. Why would they do such a thing? Because instead of using hemp for paper, clothing, fuel, oils, resins, medicines, and many other uses, we now use paper and synthetic petrochemicals. Hearst owned huge forests and interests in lumber mills. Dupont made synthetic fuels and fibers (nylon, rayon, plastics) from petroleum. Create the 'reefer madness' concept, and then associate marijauna use with hemp, BINGO, suddenly you need to buy more expensive rope that doesnt last as long to boot. You demonize the fringe use of a very mild narcotic responsible for less criminal activity than a legal (alcohol) alternative. Hell Aculaud, I think you would be a hemp activist. Visit Ground Zero and see if you would post this afterwards.<span id='postcolor'> Uh oh. Warin is now a philisophical drunk: Humour is, by its nature, cruel and insensitive. Virtually everything that we laugh at is in some way cruel or hurtful to someone. If it isnt racist or sexist or ageist... then it's demeaning to someone somewhere. I think the core of making something that is essentially mean and low not as painful is to somehow set it in a light where we can laugh at it. The events of 9/11 were horrific. I dont need to visit ground zero to know that... I saw the images in the weeks after. I saw specks that were people hurtling to their deaths as they jumped. It's the juxtaposition of that painful image of Manhattan shrouded in smoke, with the rather amusing caption on it there that will let us smile a little... and not feel the pain of the inhumanity done there quite so keenly. Should anyone forget the loss of innocence and all the people killed that day... and the thousands more directly affected? No But at the same time should we not be able to smile? Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted August 25, 2002 What it does or not does I dont know. But all I know is that people who smoke too much become terribly passive (and somehow less smart). From my university I can tell that most of them failed one or two semestres and I wouldnt say because only stupid people smoke pot (spell?). I didnt notice something simillar from hardcore-alcoholics. When discussing the issue I wouldnt always take the american approach that only weighs up the "health" issue but also what a drug does to your personality. I am pretty much sure I am correct that when I say that most who smoke to much are loosing their self-initivative, the discipline to work on their life, they tend to become indifferent about their goals, results and dreams. To me that is far more dangeruous than ruining my liver. Prost!
Major Fubar 0 Posted August 25, 2002 I much as I love (and I do mean love) alcohol, it is a far more destructive drug than marijuana... When you take into account things like drink driving deaths, drunken brawls, alcohol related domestic violence...not to mention killing brain cells and your liver. But it is also true that people tend to underestimate the negative effects of Mary Jane...I've seen some good friends turn into unmotivated zombies who almost never leave the house... The worst of all is tobacco...at leat dope and booze give you some benefits...WTF does tobacco do for you, apart from stink?

Guest Posted August 25, 2002 Drugs in any form (including alcohol) are dangerous if abused. Yes, if you smoke weed every day, you will not be able to function in society - but the same goes with alcohol. I think in the end it is about personal responsibility and I don't think the government has the right to dictate what we put in our bodies. So I am very much pro legalization. Unfortunately it is not likely to happen in Sweden. We are entirely de-synced with the current legalization trends in Europe. We learn from the elementary school and up that drugs are drug and drugs are bad. Weed is the same as Heroin and it is bad. Very few people seem to realize that this a ridiculous concept. Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted August 25, 2002 Did you copy/paste that from the GreenParty programm? I agree though, it might help, but it may also widen the product's customer-base!

Major Fubar 0 Posted August 25, 2002 The point is that you get "something" from alcohol and marijuana (altered awareness/emotional state). All you get from tobacco is dirty shit in your lungs, elevated heartrate and generally decreased health. I mean, it's not even a decent stimilant like caffeine is...(and yes, I used to smoke, so I do know first hand). Oh well, each to their own. But at least when I'm drinking beer I dont get my drug down other people's throats, like smokers do.
