I just discovered.. *Parachuting*

If you put your men "In cargo" and use

---------------------------------------------------------------

chute = "Steerable_Parachute_F" createVehicle [0,0,0];

chute setPos [getPos this select 0, getPos this select 1, 200];

this moveIndriver chute;

-------------------------------------------------

They can acually parachute and land and regroup and all... Not tried to make em jump from a chopper...

The AI will also use the parachute backpack, but this sounds like a good work-around for troops that need a different backpack (assuming they keep their current backpack after they're forced into the parachute).

Nice. I can make them start in the air and use this, but I can't seem to make them jump from a chopper. If I put them in cargo, when they eject, they splat. I do use the inventory while in chopper to move a steerable chute to my inventory before ejection.
