Vietnam war related question

Recommended Posts

I recently watched "We Were Soldiers" and have been doing some net checking after that. I came across this picture and text...

Can anyone confirm wether or not the early Hueys had no M-60 doorgunners?

Check out this link, it has pretty exhaustive info about the Huey variants: www.vectorsite.net/avhuey.html

In short, it appears that some of the the initial transport HU-1As to be deployed in Vietnam were fitted with door M-60s at a cost of reduced payload capacity. The feature became standard in the later and more powerful (UH-1D/H) models.

...BTW, is the movie any good? wink.gif

I reckon its kind of like "Braveheart". Impressive filming, great action, a couple of funny scenes. As for historical accuracy, I hope it isn't like "Braveheart" but I don't really know. Haven't checked up enough on what really happened yet.

The movie was alright, good filming, good action, bad love subpolt :\

Try reading the book: We Were Soldiers Once, and Young

An impressive and detailed - if not somewhat boring - account by the Colonel. Whom is now a general if I'm not mistaken.

Negative, I have seen pictures of Huey slicks in the early '60s with Pigs on the sides. I think the author made a mistake, as that's a dustoff bird, and if you panned the camera to the right, you will probably see a big old red cross.

On the other hand, I also know there was a lot of field modifications going on, and I suppose some aircrews may have done away with the weight for a more responsive aircraft.

Read "Chickenhawks," by Robert Mason. He was a pilot in one of the first Huey-D units into Vietnam. Inintially, they didn't have M60s. Soon they started slinging them in the doors on bungi chords. Been a long time since I read it, I think he went in 1965.
