Resistance is futile

Recommended Posts

I wish everyone wouldnt get all excited over this addon.

This addon is just like any other addon.

What makes it so special  ?

I just dont see the excitement that everybody else does. I see what BIS tells us .. they have to sell a product. I dont blame them at all.

Its the consumer. Ignorance of the consumer.

The OFP community has paid for this new code with its dedication and time involved. The Crashes, CTD's, BSOD's and all that comes with finding and solving problems with game code.

We were the beta testers and now BIS has a NEW and Improved product. Great and all .. woot! woot!

Has anyone considered that we have already paid for this code when we purchased this game back in 2001 ? Does anyone realize that the "Addon" is another way BIS can pull in revenue ? Thats all it is .. they need more money to keep things going, it makes sense. We all need money, we have to eat and feed our families. BIS is a business not a charity.

However, I myself wont be buying the addon. I will wait for the patches and continue running the 37th Mike-Force Dedicated Server on v1.60.

I would rather BIS give the addon out for free and ask its dedicated fans and supporters for a small donation; if they feel the authors and programmers deserve it. Voluntarily.

This would make everybody happy, and probably make more money than forcing everyone to RE-purchase gamecode that they have already paid for in the past.

(40$ is kinda steep for an addon - Since I paid 40$ for the original game)

The way I see it is ... the OFP community is dying off. The people that still play the game need to support it VOLUNTARILY, not because they feel BIS owes them anything, but because they love the game and want to see it continue to thrive and grow.

BIS has done a great job, and they deserve all the respect and the praise we can give them .. they are truely behind their fans 99.9%.  -

oh and another thing ... NO YOU CANT HAVE 02!

so tell me Haxor. would you make a donation to BIS, i know i am buying the addon, if you look at the people who made "the sims" the expansion packs where patches basicly and they charged people to pay for them. shure i dont have a proble with BIS selling there addons in a expanshion pack. but if this was on the volintear bases how many people do you think would actuly send it money. BIS have given more they they needed to in this game for free already. </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">I would rather BIS give the addon out for free <span id='postcolor'>

from this it sounds like another line saying. Give me Give me Give me. but this is my opion but i reather buy a quality item that some one worked hard on.

technically, add-on is not the best description of OFPR.

it seems like they improved both on netcodes and graphics engine, which, AFAIK, is a hell lot of programming. and making bigger island, although imaginary(i'm assuming) is pain staking job.

so i think it's worth shelling 30 bucks for it.

when we bought OFP, we bought it as is. with MS's DirectPlay..now the decided to go with socket implementation, which means they wrote the code all from scratch. I say their effort on that justifies 30 bucks alone.

and volunteering to pay doesn't work... sad.gif

As a matter of fact I would ... honestly not 40$ but maybe 10 or 20 .. not just for the addons .. but for the work and dedication that went into making the new code.

As far as the "as is" clause ... I dont see that anywhere in the License agreement .. where did you get that ? BIS has an obligation to support a product they chose to release prematurely. I feel that this update to the game code is long past due. I am not saying that BIS hasnt given enough already, but if I were to start a small forest fire and be the one to put it out ... would I be a hero ?

Its all a matter of factish, where they sold a product that wasnt ready. Maybe you dont remeber coming into the scene back in 2001 .. v1.10 .. it was messy. Its getting better and all, but in my opinion its not worth another 40$ to get a product I should have received in the 1st place.

30$ ?? I want the store your getting it at ....

Anyways .. your right ... Its not just an addon, they have revised the game code as well.

I cant say I am not interested in the addons, but are they selling the addons or the new code ? Or both ?

Obviously both.

This means we get yet another executable file .. and as far as I know there is no dedicated server support mentioned at all, or even an update to the 1.60 dedicated server code.

Am I missing something here ? Please fill me in if I am.

yes, you are missing something. if you actually read the thread that SUMA mentioned in that thread you provided, OFPR uses another executable file that derives certain characteristics from OFP.

in other words, how can an expansion work without original executable? it means new executable.

of course you can argue that BIS is just putting old executable back in, but i highly doubt if that will help BIS in the future. thus new executable means that there are changes done.

and dedicated server is not a neccessity to a game. although it helps, it is not the essential part of it. and just becuase BIS is mum about the subject it doesn't mean that there won't be one.

Let me turn this back around ... as the topic states

"Resistance is Futile"

Everyone has a right to their own opinion. I repect yours and anyone else that feels the same way. Nuff said.

I speak for a small group of people of the OFP community, we all feel the same about this, and they can feel free to add comments and quote me on this.

Resistance I am affraid is..(futile) as I said before a Revenue maker for BIS. Thats all .... nothing more, nothing less.

Dont go getting all emotional about it, I know you were excited about this NEW addon everyone has been talking about, and I will admit I was just as excited as you. I did some research and discovered that its not all its cracked up to be ... actually very disappointing.

I posted this just so people would read it and maybe come down off that High expectations horse they are on.

Do you remember the 1st addon ? Well tis a time to remember.

All I am truely interested in is the game code; thats what its about. There will be more addons, more models, and more mods to come. These rapid fast moving changes in the game code have caused a never ending riple in the ofp community that may never end. Torn between 2 (soon to be 3) different versions of ofp. This sucks ... v1.46, v1.60 and now v1.75.

If BIS doesnt release (1) Patch soon to fix v1.46 to 1.75 or 1.80, whatever .. (1) VERSION - CONSOLIDATE INTO (1) they will continue to see the ofp shrink to a handfull of players and unsuspecting noob's.

What else do you expect to get when you have multi versions of a game running in 1 community ?

no they dont, all there patches and addons are for free, and they arent obligated to give you anything after you pay the money. They do it becuase they are dedicated to the game.

Everywhere ive seen(Best Buy, Target, Gamestop, EB, Codemasters, Walmart, and other local stores) have it for $29.99.

Same with you ... are yall on the same page as me ?

Had yer wheaties this morning ?

Take a shower and wake up, then come back and talk smack.

The Game is NOT even for sale anywhere yet. US EU CAN or the UK

How you get pricing on something that doesnt exist in stores yet ?

Was it advertised ?

I was just in Best Buy Yesterday .. they dont even have the original OFP on the shelf anymore.

Maybe the city I am in is slow ... doesnt really matter I guess. 30$ - 40$ yer still RE-PURCHASING the game.

If it was a stand-alone and it didnt require a previous 40$ purchase .. YES 40$ is fair.

But thats not the case people .... add them up

40$ original game

30$ Addon + New code

$70.00

So Pay $70.00 for a game we all KNOW is going to have more issues. Then we can spend another 30$ to fix those .. then another 20$ for the fix to the previous code that we paid 40$ for.

HAHAHA !!! I am cracking myself up ... almost sounds funny.

I'm excited to the point where I've been buggin the hell out of local EB clerk past week. what am i expecting? not much though. all i'm expecting is new functionslities in command, better graphics improved MP, and some new islands and weapons.

if you are talking about ultimate update 1, i was thrilled to download the whole freaking patch via 56k modem. and it didn't let me down. the only thing that let me down was that i had to look for instructions on how to use LaserGuide.

I don't know about you, but one thing that I most like about is gameplay, not weapons and vehicles. with OFP, your degree of freedom expanded exponentially, unlike other FPS. to put icing on the cake, there were incorporated vehicles in it. that's why I play ofp. able to test yourself against terrains and variables of unseen forces(another MP player)

I don't know what research you did, but if you had access to a bootleg, you just lost my respect. and what BIS has been releasing about OFPR has not reduced my expectations. more likely they seem to give continuity and consistency, which i find great.

and speaking of torn between MP choices, I'd say chances of that happening would be less. When ppl see other ppl playing on Nogova with better engines, they will shell out 30$ more for that. OFP is for dedicated ppl. some friends of mine never got the hang of it. but i got the hang of it and I got hooked on it.

and to be honest, my view is that expansion will not outsell OFP. OFP is already a game for dedicated person, and percentage wise, chance of those dedicated person actually buying expansion would be high.

The UK release date is still on schhedule for June 28th

I would really like this issue come to a close ... I did not intend for this thread to go off coarse into a Release Date Price conflict.

The issue at hand is we need (1) Solid Version and all need to be on the same page ASAP.

When you buy OFPR, you arent paying for the code. You are paying for the new island, the new units, the new netcode, and the new graphics. You bought OFP, good for you, but its just stupid to think that you are entitled to getting everything in Resistance free. Besides, its an addon pack, and like all addon packs, it doesnt cost as much as a full game, so stop whining. And besides, from my point of view, Im partly buying OFPR as a way of saying thank you to BIS for putting out my favorite game of all time, not to mention, keeping up a constant stream of support and FREE addons. For the position that you are arguing, you are incredibly ill-informed haxor. BIS owns all the stuff they make, and they have the right to sell it to you if you want to use it. If you wrote a book that sold a million copies, would you just hand out the prequel for free just because some of your fans are cheapskates? Of course you wouldnt, because you have bills to pay. Well, so does BIS. And if they pay their bills by maintaining and expanding one of the most bad assed games in existence, thats fine by me, and here-let-me-get-my-wallet.

If you inform yerself as to reading the previous posts, you will see that the NEW code doesnt touch the existing code. What does this mean to you TEX ?

you were complaining that pricing of OFPR was unreasonable and I showed you that your logics were false.

and you didn't do a good job of staying on topic that you started out with either. you claimed that this topic was to have ppl be ready for disappointement, and you claim that this thread was started for that purpose, now you are turning back and saying that this thread was meant for one executable/copy?

the reason why I quote you is becuase i'm lazy. i usually press quote button to see your rant and it's easier for me to do it from that way.

your thread? ROFL!

and even thread starter can't stay on his own topic. tounge.gif
