Tovarish 0 Posted April 25, 2002 Ok, this is the kind of riddle us college kids ask each other in that last half-hour before an impossible final exam to get our minds off it. It took me a while to figure it out and it's pretty funny watching someone else trying, might be easier if it's written down like this but anyway here goes: Three guys need to share a hotel room for a night, so they walk into the hotel and ask the owner how much. He says $30. So they each pay $10 and go off to their room. The owner then realizes "shit, it's a weekend, and I forgot their $5 discount!" So he sends a bellboy to their room with the $5. The bellboy gets there and explains to them the situation, and they say "cool, but you can't really split $5 evenly three ways, so let's just each take $1 and give the bellboy a $2 tip." So they do that, and off goes the bellboy, but then one of the guys says "Wait a minute, we paid $10 each and then got a dollar back, so really we paid $9 each. Then we gave the bellboy a $2 tip. 9*3 = 27, 27+2 = 29. Where the hell did that last dollar go??"

Guest Posted April 25, 2002 The flaw is in *plus* $2 for the bell boy. This should not be added; it should be subtracted, since the $2 the bellboy got is part of the $27 they spent together. If you subtract the $2 from the $27 you get the $25, which is right.

There must have been half a dozen of us trying to figure that one out
