Will-my-pc-run-Arma3? What cpu/gpu to get? What settings? What system specifications?
Valken replied to Placebo's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
@ smokejumper that system should be able to run ARMA 3 at Ultra settings but Zen 3 is going to be announced on October 8th. if you can wait 2 weeks, you might have better options depending in how much of an improvement it might be. The 12 cores of that 3900x won't affect ARMA. It would be IPC, CPU speed per core, and lowest RAM latency + highest possible speed combined that would make the biggest impacts. I am looking at Zen 3 like many ARMA players here as a potential upgrade too. Read Oldman and Groove C's older post in this thread as they have great advice. @ Fluffyplays Check to make sure CPU and GPU fans are not clogged with dust. I just cleaned my system (AIO watercooler) and vacuum a ton of dust out of the radiator. Gain my performance back immediately. -
I have a 16:9 screen at 1080p. This is how ARMA normally looks: But I messed around and changed it to half the height to "simulate" if I had a 32:9 screen aspect ratio at 1920 x 540: Both pictures at different aspect ratios and FOV are on the SAME monitor. Now I love the 32:9 AR because for driving and flying, it is amazing. I am assuming the FOV was changed to "widen" the screen. If I ZOOM all the way back in, it looks very close to the original ARMA at ~ 70 FOV, maybe just a tad closer. Unzoom and zoomed out looks amazing for driving, flying, or cutscenes and I am happy with this. My monitor is ~ 32" wide already so I can live it. I plan to do the same if I upgrade to a larger 4K HDTV as my gaming monitor in the future. Now what I want to do is keep the WIDER FOV from the 32:9 aspect ratio, but get back the extra 540 vertical pixels so my screen is fully used, at 1920 x 1080 resolution, but with the same FOV as 1920 x 540. How do I set the aspect ratio at 1920x1080 to match the widen FOV of the bottom screen? Can anyone advise?

Need help to set 32:9 FOV on 16:9 screen!
Valken replied to Valken's topic in ARMA 3 - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
So if the standard FOV @ 16:9 is 70, would my target or desired FOV be ~ 140 if I want to simulate looking at 32:9 wide since it would be double the width? would I use FOV 140 as my target FOV to calculate for? -
You can try to move the UI to the monitor but you need a mod. So for servers that you play on, ask the ADMIN if they would mind installing the mod to support you.

New idea: Possession or mind control (remote) mod: Basically a player or AI (enemy) can have a power (weapon) that will allow with X% chance to possess and turn an enemy to its side and control. Ideally this would be "up-gradable" based on use (fake experience). I was playing around with the Alienz from IceBreaker - https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2052502998 and remember in X-Com, the Sectoids had the ability to possess and turn players into enemies. Game play would be for the AI to cast mind control (use weapon), then a team or coop player "switch sides, same sides as the enemy" and turn on the player's team. Ammo would be stamina or some kind of energy. It should fatigue the user or be rechargeable through resting to balance it. More ammo can be accumulated for experienced or high power Psychics. Animation to be played can be something like this (the hand gestures): From Whiplash Static Animations Or praise the sun: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1311106750&searchtext=animation Just cycle it up and down like the enemy is concentrating. It should have a sound indicator such as the target having headaches or "screaming get out of my mind". The reasoning for it is to balance weakly armored enemies with surprise yet different attacks. It can be "weapon" that we apply to certain units so they have a chance to use it. I would use it in an X-Com, SCP or Cultist type scenario. -

I am binge watching through Fear of the Walking Dead and Walking Dead, and in one of the episodes (Fear S3-Episode 14/15), they were eating or drinking the BRAIN STEMS of the Zombz zombz as a drug... It supposedly gave the survivor adrenaline and endorphins. In real life, adrenal glands are on the kidneys. More details: Would be cool to create an (optional) drug economy based on this. Kill zombs, crack skulls, harvest the brain stem and keep it as healing speed up drug or sell it for survival. Maybe it would be good incentive to have bandits stealing essentials, water, food, ammo and brain stems (drugs) if the players had any on them or if the player may need to attack bandits to get supplies from these guys hording it.

You can just download ace, then DELETE or better yet MOVE the other PBO files such as medical, fatigue or stamina and etc... into a BACKUP folder within the ACE mod folder. You need the ACE_COMMON.PBO and whatever you want such as the ACE TRACERS. That should work. If you see error codes, then close ARMA and add back the missing PBO files. -

Wait for Zen 3 AMD CPUs to come out in a few months or earlier. The new CPU architecture now has 8 cores in one CCX, vs 4 cores per CCX and 2 CCX per die. So up to 8 cores will communicate without the infinity fabric and be much faster. At the very least, it would put pressure on the market and push Intel CPUs down in price so WIN WIN for everyone. Also, on your RAM selection, buy the FASTEST RAM with LOWEST LATENCY (CL rating) you can afford. Do not buy "cheap" RAM for ARMA as memory performance is just as important as IPC and speed from CPU. Then buy whatever GPU you need. Worst case, you can look at the AMD 3300X CPU (4 cores, 8 threads in 1 CCX) and get a 2080 GPU for ARMA. Other games that needs more than 4 cores will suffer but it will be a FAST ARMA game machine. -

@Groove_C Have you seen these CPUs: Both are laptop that has the same EDRAM as the 5775c but it seems they added an adapter for desktops! Maybe a better buy and wait for Zen 3? -

I have a comment and request that also applies to all planes in ARMA: Transparent DOOR and PANEL between pilot and passenger areas on medium large planes. After watching the below video: I remember most modern airplanes are computer controlled for takeoff and landing. I want to be able to sit as a passenger with other players online in a huge plane and see the pilot and co pilot raise their hands in the air during auto take off and landing. It would just be like a roller coaster but for giggles... -

@RAGP13 I did a new test on my system to see if I can get a ton more FPS without sacrificing details: 1920x1080p resolution: All Ultra except for: Draw Distance - 3800 Objects Distance - 500 <---- Huge impact Shadows - high Water Reflections - high Clouds - high PIP - high AA = 2xAA PP = CMAA <--- using Nvidia GPU. You can test this or with FXAA Ultra Using the above I can "BARELY" tell from 8xAA until I zoom in. Vsync OFF Blur = 0, I hate it. Bloom = 10 DoF = 30 --- just a little bit I was getting up to 80 FPS in game with low AI, less than 50 at once... Also, I know AMD defaults to RGSS AA. Check to make sure you have AA set to Multi Sampling AA or application control from the driver control panel. Nvidia defaults to MSAA. SSAA or RGSSAA quality is way better but can take a huge impact if you need FPS. -

@Groove_C Renoir APU is out and do you know the intercore bounce on those 6 and 8 core cpus? Would be good to know. Something happened and I might NEED to upgrade faster then I thought. So I would look at something that can hold me on both ARMA 3 and ARMA 4 Enfusion engine at the minimum. @RAGP13 The benchmark is sometimes misleading for one other reason: The AI is running on YOUR computer. In most online games, the AI is running on the server so your FPS would go up further as the CPU load would be lower. But on some maps, there are optimization problems that will result in fixed FPS no matter what. Tanoa is GPU heavy due to the trees and high poly buildings in ULTRA. I was surprised that Chernarus 2020 from the CUP map pack is now GPU heavy due to all the upgrades they did. It looks great so I believe it was worth it so long as I get ~ 30 FPS constantly in Ultra. On my system, if I want more FPS or a better snappy feeling online, I just set Shadow, Clouds, PIP and WATER to HIGH or VERY HIGH. Then drop the OBJECTS distance down to 500 or 1000. I leave the DRAW distance at 3800. Everything else is on Ultra including 8xAA with CSAA. You can drop AA down to 4xAA with FXAA Very High to see if that speeds. AA is ROPS heavy and Nvidia usually has more ROPS per GPU than AMD at the same performance levels. I did this when I had an AMD GPU but your 5700XT with 64 ROPS should be doing 8xAA fine. My 1060 GTX only has 48 ROPs and I do run 8xAA most of the time. -

@RAGP13 Those benchmarks more than likely out of date and only RELATIVE to the reviewer at that time because the build of ARMA 3 was different. To MAX out ARMA 3, you need to set your CPU to the highest stable speed (OC or PBO), all cores, well at least 2 cores Memory at the Highest Speed and Lowest Latency and ensure 2x Channels fully working GPU running without other background load. ARMA 3 the game installed on SSD or RAM drive if possible due to all the near continuous asset loading during game play. I did the ABOVE in ARMA 2, AMAZING performance. Close all the background applications or run a "game booster" program to do it for you before you launch STEAM and ARMA 3. Then run the benchmark at LOW, NORMAL, HIGH, VERY HIGH and ULTRA settings to see where you sit with the current build of ARMA 3. Run it 3 times each to get an average with NO MODS loaded to ensure consistency. Also, in the Arma 3 Launcher, you should check use 64 Bit, and more threads as all of us would have these settings. You can test the memory allocator but the current default or Intel one is good. There is an AMD optimized "dll" file you can find to push further but it may crash. Lastly, many of the ARMA guys here do a MANUAL OC on the CPU to lock the CPU frequency to the highest stable. I am unsure of Ryzen PBO as I do not have such a system, yet. My next system would more than likely be an 8 core Ryzen seeing how good they have been improving but right now, I am on an older Intel 4790K 4x Core CPU which is really close to performance to your system. Except I have 32GB of DDR3 RAM vs you with DDR4 RAM. GPU you should be way faster than me on a 1060 GTX. -
Very cool. Is the STEAM Edition of ARMA Armed Assault compatible with the GOG edition?! I would love to play some COOP with fellow ARMAholics.

Nvidia is still better in DX9 - DX11 games because their drivers use the CPU to do some calculations. I have no idea what it is but you can always see the CPU usage is higher with Nvidia than AMD GPU on the same CPU, and it seems Intel CPU usage is HIGHER than AMD CPU when using Nvidia GPUs for the same game getting slightly better FPS. Probably some kind of optimizations. On DX12 and Vulkan, it is almost API optimized based on the game and maxes out most GPU. -

Set your video objects distance down to 500, then adjust your video settings until you get good FPS. Then slowly increase the objects back up until your FPS starts to move around. The terrain and objects can affect both GPU memory and CPU. Or use the PRESETS under video and start with normal, high and adjust to balance between quality vs speed. -
TPW MODS: enhanced realism and immersion for Arma 3 SP.
Valken replied to tpw's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
You need to copy the TPW_MODS.hpp file in your ARMA 3\Userconfig\ folder similar to the below: X:\Steam\steamapps\common\Arma 3\Userconfig\tpw_mods\ Where X is the drive you have Steam and ARMA 3 installed on. Then run it again and it should be fine. You can also manually edit the tpw_mods.hpp file to change some of the default settings.- 5767 replies
