I have been mulling the idea of starting an online group over for quite a while now and I have decided to give it a go. After all nothing ventured, nothing gained. If you are a mature gamer interested in joining a new group and helping build something from the ground up then please read on..
Aren't there enough online groups already?
I think it is a good thing that the Arma community remains active and engaging, that can only be for the good of the series. Each group does things in their own way and I hope we can grow to be able to contribute to the wider community.
What will the group be?
The group will be modelling itself on the British Army; although I do not intend to style it after a specific regiment or formation it will be based on the airmobile role as this offers the most variation for mission scenarios. I aim to build a relaxed environment, in which a sense of humour is essential, but one that fosters a sense of professionalism when online. Just because something works in the real world does not mean it will work in a virtual one (nor add to the enjoyment) and that is why I intend to 'emulate rather than simulate' contempory operations. Part of the satisfaction of building a group like this is developing our own TTPs/SOPs from trial and error; that for me is more enjoyable than having everyone read & memorise an infantry pam or slavishly following a RW TTP.
Will there be a rank structure?
In short, no. If that works for other groups then great but I'd like our environment to be a little more relaxed. However, when in game then I'd expect the members to respect any command appointment given to someone in oder to achieve the mission. If they can't then they are probably not the kind of person I want to spend my game time with and imposing a virtual rank structure won't solve their attitude problem. There will be a group heirarchy for admin purposes though, and as we develop if members want to step into positions such as Section Commander or 2IC full time then all well & good.
Who are you looking for?
I'm based in the UK so ideally other UK based players, EU players are of course more than welcome as long as the GMT timing isn't an issue. Perhaps there are players who have been brought in by DayZ, or those who are unsure of joining a large & well established group. This is an ideal opportunity to not only join a group but help build and shape it from the ground up. You must be mature and willing to learn and to contribute; how you are is more important than who you are.
Are there any restrictions?
Yes, but mostly common sense ones. The main one is that I ask that you are over 18, I have been involved in several online groups that have had younger members and it never ends well. Their idea of 'being mature' obviously differs from mine. You must own a legal copy of Arma 2 OA or CO, have TS and can speak English. I appreciate there are some players who do not, or cannot, use TS to talk online. If you can listen out on TS to react to what is being said then you can be considered. A list of mods that I feel can be used as a baseline are detailed on the forums listed below.
Can I be a pilot?
Yes. As the group is to emulate the airmobile/air assault role then we'd be a bit stuck without pilots. However, be sure you can fly and not pile into a hillside with a full load of troops and don't expect to be flying around for an hour in an AH brassing everything up. Sometimes being a pilot isn't all glamour!
OK, where do I go?
I have set up a simple forum HERE to act as a place to discuss and provide a central point for organising the 'where we go from here'.
Why are you talking to yourself like this?
I don't know. I should go and lie down.
Thanks for your time, let's see what happens.
