    Sound stops working

Nope. That didn't work. At least, it happened again just now.
  2. Yup, that worked for me. Thanks! I especially like this as a newbie, since I can practice with just myself and one AI soldier. One suggestion: make the marksman a medic instead, so I can get healing. It's not as much fun to play when my character is injured. But otherwise, it's great.
  3. OK, yes, this was my problem, I guess. I forgot that there were number key commands, and since they don't show up on the screen, I thought I was more limited than I am. Thanks for this! It will help a lot! Bill

    Sound stops working

Thanks. That sounds right, because the Windows sound I hear when this happens is the same one I hear when I turn my printer on or off ("device connect," or maybe "device disconnect"). Yet I never hear this any other time, except when I'm playing Arma III. I leave my headphones plugged in permanently, so if it were a loose connection, I should hear this other times, too, I'd think. I'm not using the headphones at other times, though, so only the microphone, not the earpiece, is still set as the default sound device when I'm not in Arma III. That might make a difference. Thanks for the reply! Bill ---------- Post added at 11:01 ---------- Previous post was at 09:53 ---------- I might have discovered the solution to this. At least, there's a hotfix at Microsoft which sounds like it might apply to my problem: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2721341 I'll try this, and if it doesn't work, I'll be back. :) Thanks.
  5. I'm trying to learn the basics using the Editor, but I can't figure out how to place crates of equipment. Any help? I want to be able to try out a variety of different weapons - and in many cases (grenade launchers, rocket launchers, etc.) with extra ammunition, too. Also, how do I place vehicles without drivers inside? I'd like to put a variety of empty vehicles so I can experiment with them, and I'd also like to put vehicles as stationary targets. I'm a newbie with Arma III, and I've never played the other Arma games, so I still need to feel comfortable with the basics. The Editor seems great for that, but there's a lot I don't understand about it. Thanks.
  6. That worked. Thanks! I could have sworn I'd tried that, but I guess not, because it works for me now. Thanks again! Bill
  7. I get the same message (well, maybe not exactly, since I didn't note the name of the "deleted content," when I try to play it as a single-player mission. Note that I don't use the Dev version of the game.
  8. I'm glad I asked. I would never have found it there! But yup, that worked. Thanks for the help! Bill PS. Thanks for that link to those video tutorials, too. But I'm needing to learn the game first, before starting to create missions. Still, there's probably a lot I can learn from them, anyway, if I can just find the time.
  9. Another dumb question, no doubt, but do the video settings I use affect multiplayer at all, specifically the 'ping' time? I've left them at the default, which is ultra high (given that I got a new computer recently). Will that have any effect at all when it comes to being able to play multiplayer? I could always lower the video settings, if I'd have more multiplayer options that way (again, regarding connection speed). The game runs quite well, so I wouldn't change things, otherwise. Thanks.
  10. It's funny, but I've discovered I can't trust that 'ping' number Arma III shows me. I had no problem playing a coop game last Friday even though the ping consistently showed as 2500. Once I got in the game, though, it seemed to be more like 160. If that's regularly the case, I should have a lot more multiplayer games I can join than I thought.
  11. I don't have this problem, exactly (maybe because Arma III starts in about 15 seconds, for me), but I can't seem to alt-tab out of it when it's running, unless I have another window open (not just minimized). I've mainly had a problem because of Teamspeak. If that's minimized, I can't alt-tab out of Arma III to get to it. Even when it's not minimized, if I have to close it and start it up again (because of a sound problem), Arma III takes over at full-screen as soon as I close Teamspeak, so I don't have any way to restart the program without exiting Arma III first. Is there a solution to this? My apologies if I'm inappropriately hijacking this thread, but I thought my question was similar enough to fit here. If not, again, I apologize. Bill

    Deadfast's Readable UI

Thanks. So this won't work unless a server specifically allows it? Hmm,... I suppose all mods are like that? It makes sense, but I never thought about it, since I don't usually play multiplayer games (or use mods, for that matter). But I can see where allowing any mod at all would probably be insane in a multiplayer game, huh? Thanks again - for the mod, too.

    Deadfast's Readable UI

Um, sorry, but what's a key? Is that something I should know before using this mod? I'm new to Arma III and haven't been using any mods, but it would be nice to see what soldier type I've chosen.
  14. Thanks for asking (and thanks for Orion987 for replying), because there are 77 pages of comments in that Arma 2 thread, and I didn't want to wade through them all to try to find out what this is. :)

    Tips on flying a helicopter?

I tried a flight simulator (Microsoft Flight Simulator, maybe?) in the 1980s, and nothing since. I was really, really bad at it. :) I tried Wing Commander: Privateer in the early 1990s, too. That's "flight related," I guess, but a spaceship. I was also hopelessly inept at that, so I didn't play long. I really couldn't play the game, as I recall. So, no, I'm not familiar with the instruments, and my eye-hand coordination stinks. I didn't grow up with video games, and it shows. But no problem. I haven't had time to practice in the Editor yet, but if that doesn't help, it's not the end of the world. Not everyone can be a pilot, right? :) Thanks.
  16. Thanks. (And thanks to you, too, Kama!) Unfortunately, that's been my experience with public coop games, so far (almost always, at least). However, I'm not just a beginner at this, I don't normally play multiplayer games at all. I play a lot of games, too, but I tend to jump from one to another. As a beginner, I wanted to stick with coop games with just a few players in the vanilla version of Arma III. If anyone here has seen idjester's videos on YouTube, that's pretty much what I've been looking for. (And I was able to play with him once, although the ping was so bad I couldn't get re-connected later.) That seemed like a good way to get started, and I like the squad-based teamwork in those games. (Teamwork is something that's been sorely lacking in the public coop games I've tried.) I'm a slow, rather deliberate player, who prefers to take my time. In the coop games I've tried, there's been little or no communication, characters have been strung out clear across the map, and I've struggled just to keep up with the people running from one point to another. Much of the time, I don't even know what the objective is (if it's not clearly marked on the map, at least). That's not the kind of game I want. But I haven't wanted to make a commitment to a clan, either, since I tend not to stick with any game for long. I buy a lot of games (and I've become addicted to Kickstarter), so there's always something new I want to try. Arma III itself is not my usual kind of game, but it was just too neat to pass up. :) So I appreciate the comments here, and the invitations. But I'm a casual kind of player and likely to stay that way. I don't want to give anyone the wrong impression, especially when clans are probably looking for people who'll stick with them. (I'm also too old to have friends who play computer games. I can see where this would be a lot of fun with friends.) As I say, I appreciate the invitations. I'm just being cautious here, because I don't want to disappoint anyone.

    Tips on flying a helicopter?

Thanks for the... varied replies. :) I find these helicopters quite easy to crash, myself, and the controls are not at all intuitive for me. But I'm not very good with this kind of thing, anyway. (By which I mean that I'm really bad at this stuff!) I will try different helicopters in the Editor, though. I'm sure that practice will help, eventually. And if worse comes to worst, I can just stick with infantry missions. Thanks again for the tips!
  18. Thanks. I'm in the U.S. (Nebraska), so I might not be able to play on a UK server. (I seem to have trouble even with many U.S. servers.) But I'll see. My main problem is a lack of friends who play computer games. I'm in the wrong demographic for that, I guess, because I don't know anyone locally who plays computer games - except for Solitaire and Freecell, maybe. Heh, heh. On the other hand, I'm retired, so I have plenty of time for games (not enough, though - there's never enough time for everything). I've started to find people playing Coop games, though, so it's good. I'm learning a little more about what to look for, too, I think. Again, thanks!
  19. Thanks for the replies. I figured that was probably the case, but I've been having trouble finding Coop games with a green ping. And I'd been invited to play on a server which worked for awhile - with a red bar pretty much all the time - but then I couldn't get reconnected to it. So I'm grasping at straws, I guess. :)
  20. Thanks! I'll look for you.

    Grenade Launcher sight

I must be blind, because I still don't see a red dot (though I know the sight you're talking about), but I get most of that, I think. My problem was a combination of being hopeless at estimating distances and expecting the gun barrel to point towards the target. I'll try that NUM 0 stuff the next time I'm in the game, since I really don't know what you're talking about. But I'll experiment. Either way, I may not be able to hit anything, but at least I know why I'm missing now. :) Thanks much!

    Frustrating experience

I think the alpha is great fun, too. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who plays computer games, other than solitaire or Freecell, so playing with some friends is not an option for me. (I'm in the wrong demographic for that.) However, the main reason I got the alpha was so I could practice a bit. Heh, heh. This is my first Arma game, and I need a lot of practicing. But I've been amazed at how well the game has run, given that it's just in alpha. Sure, I lose sound occasionally and find other bugs, but it's certainly not as buggy as I expected. That's been my experience, at least.

    Grenade Launcher sight

I'm a little confused by this thread, but then, I'm not experienced with either Arma or these weapons in RL. (Luckily, I do know which end of a mouse to hold, if just barely.) So I might be talking about something entirely different (for one thing, I never see a red dot or range markings at all). But in the Infantry Showcase, for example, I can switch to a grenade launcher on my rifle. But how in the heck do you aim that thing? There seem to be two sights, neither of which point at where the grenade will actually land. That's when I right-click to bring the gun to an aiming position (like I'd use a scope). If I don't do that, there's a white marker on the screen which also seems to have little relation to where the grenade goes. Is there any way to aim this at all, or do I just point in the general direction? With more experience, I have gotten a little better at telling where the grenade will land, but it's far from really "aiming." What am I missing?
  24. I must say that I'm very glad to see a couple of the changes in "Escape from Stratis." I play it as a single-player mission, and the respawn time has really been long. Also, assuming that I last that long (not at all guaranteed), I eventually get to the point where I need to put it aside for awhile. But when I try to get back into the game, I can't. Instead, I get that 'Mission Success' notice. So both of those fixes are very welcome here! My thanks to the developers!

    Single Player Missions?

Ah, OK. I had this problem, too - and with another single-player mission, as well. (And a third just... doesn't show up as an option at all.) Well, I suppose I'll be able to play them eventually, so I'll try to remember to check again later. Thanks for the explanation!
