    some kind of existencial crisis

Stress can do it. A bad spot of luck, too. A distraction perhaps- maybe he got a girlfriend and has been studying other... stuff. Maybe he bought ARMA III and is enthralled in the campaign, or more likely, is spending 14 hours a day standing naked in front of a VAS ammobox on a CTI server. Cheating, sure. Maybe. But probably not.

On a Harley Davidson. I've always loved those pictures, things don't get much more MURRCAN than a Milwaukee big-twin. What, Ural isn't good enough?

The decline of Italian performance in war

Poor industry, poor logistics, and a poor officer corps pretty much dooms you to failure in WWII. Emphasis on the officers specifically. When the general staff is either too optimistic or has to bow to the dictator, it dooms it's own armies to failure. When field grade officers are ordered against impossible odds and face poor morale in their own troops, they're doomed to failure. The Germans had excellent Officers and NCO's. As did the English. American officers and NCO's improved rapidly. The state of Facist Italy was so poor before they ever kicked off their war that they were doomed to start. One of the great "what-ifs" of WWII is- if Nazi Germany doesn't have to bail Mussolini out in the Balkans, do they kick off the invasion of the Soviet Union quicker and have a few more months of good weather to capture Moscow? (Probably not. 'cuz Russia. But I digress.) It's worth noting that Italy, like France, had a serious manpower shortage to go with its poor industry and logistics. They did have some small bits of really good equipment though. Also, hadn't they failed so comically in WWII, the world would've never seen the Vespa scooter. Transport in Europe would've been very different.:p

    Ukraine General

I want to know what we ought to do too... I also want to know where the line is- Crimea? All the east? The whole country of Ukraine? The US and UK are bound by treaty to protect Ukraine's territory by the Budapest Memorandum (as is the Russian Federation). I don't see ANY positive outcome to this situation- whether we act politically, militarily, or merely complain loudly. Whatever happens, I think the best outcome will be from the United States, the UK, and the EU acting TOGETHER. The historical precedent for this kind of thing happening unchecked is almost as spooky as the thought of fighting the Russians for real.

    Is the reload indication... cheating?

HUD elements are good because they convey things that you'd know by feel or perception in real life. Even crosshairs, to a degree. (You pick a gun up, you have a decent idea where the muzzle is, not enough to accurately shoot anything more than a few yards away, but an idea.) If you empty a rifle with a bolt catch (So, Not an AK type or a Older HK or something) while shooting, you'd know from the recoil impulse that the gun was either empty or had a malfunction, even if you had lost count of what was in your magazine. Pistols tend to be a little more obvious. So I like little indicators like that. I would rather the round count went away- the Red Orchestra/Rising Storm style ammo check is much better.
  6. I've kinda been sitting here, reading this, trying to understand exactly why the difference between Communism as an ideal and communism as it was, is such a point of contention... The crimes committed by the various communist parties of Eastern Europe may have not represented the end-goal of communism. Yet, they were committed by men who called themselves communists, in the name of communism. The problem I have, and I'd hope that others would agree, with Communism as a concept is that it seeks to make everyone equal... By dragging everyone down to the same level. How does that really help? Now, why would anyone want a return to a dictatorship, whether it was under the auspices of fascism or communism or any other ideal? Because it was more stable then? Because it was safer then? Because the secret police could drag your ass to the dungeon for anything they deemed uncouth? Because people are really sheep and need to be sheparded along by a Hitler or Stalin or... Putin? When a despot represents the majority of the people it may be alright for that majority... Better hope you're part of that majority. For any form of government that doesn't rely on strongmen or despots but rather on elected representatives- the representatives have to reject corruption, and remember that their election means they owe a debt of trust to the people who put them in office. Bad things happen in every system of governance. Every system fails at one point. Bodies built of representatives are prone to failing... BUT at least that system has the chance to change and improve without a bloody coup or civil war. The rifle is the last of many, many votes. (But still an option, at least here.) Maybe the reason I can't understand the desire to go to a dictatorship is because the crime and violence on an American street isn't the same as on a street in Kiev or Krakow. We've got abuse and corruption, but it doesn't sit down to the very core of government and society. I still can't wrap my head around the idea, however. EDIT: Of course, I did kind of get caught up in the negativity of the last few pages. I don't think most of you are defending totalitarianism.
  7. Reading this thread kind of bums me out. I get to watch the negatives of Democracy and Liberty every day. Political deadlock, failed projects, stalled laws, criminals getting off on technicalities, people abusing their rights. All of it. And yet, I'll take it any day over totalitarianism. Without reservation. I'll take a damaged, imperfect, nearly broken liberty over anything else.
  8. Thanks to the community members, devs, and publishers for making this whole deal happen. IF had such great content, now the community can work with it and finish it. Thanks guys.
  9. Interesting idea, also one shockingly possible in real life. In this scenario you'd see desertions in the regular army and national guard, with the potential of whole units going anti-govt if they were asked to disarm the populace. I'm assuming that's why NG are assigned to BLUFOR? About the English as the UNFOR, wouldn't the Anglo-American affinity be as much a problem for the process as it would a benefit? IE- Wouldn't an Englishman be the amongst the most likely to sympathize with the American's he was trying to disarm and control? A suggestion on weapons- The two most common types of firearms would be traditonal Pump-Action Shotguns and .22LR Rifles. + Hunting rifles in .30-30 and .30-06. Surplus rifles- Garands, M1 Carbines, Springfields, Mosin-Nagants and Enfields would be ubiquitous. As would J and K Frame S&W's and M1911's. Civilians would quickly "acquire" better hardware from sympathetic sources such as rouge National Guard or Police Armories. (See the Athens TN. rebellion in 1946.) Just some thoughts, interested in seeing how you plan to implement this in practice. Perhaps it'd make sense to use islands (with permission!) that could represent various areas of the US abstractly rather than specifically developing them for this? I think it's a good idea for a game type, you could probably run it with base ARMA items and islands. Like Chernarus- add some US flavor to it and it could look like backwoods America.

    the MXM is too weak?

@Maffa What I'm saying is that whether it has a case or not, it's a infantry small arm cartridge so it's comparable to what else is in the game... It MIGHT actually be shorter than either cartridge, the MX magazines LOOK shorter, and minus the weight of a brass or steel case and it should be lighter too. That doesn't necessarily mean the power is less or more, however. It's deployed in a standard sized carbine, it has similar, perhaps slightly higher recoil than the 5.56mm Tavor and FN2000's in game. Logically it HAS to be a intermediate cartridge that sits in-between the current 5.56 and 7.62NATO rounds, or else why would they come up with a new caliber? There's a fair amount of debate over replacing the 5.56 in US Military use (which given history would likely mean the rest of NATO) with something like the Remington 6.8x43 SPC or the 6.5 Grendel based on experience in Afghanistan. The 5.56 tears stuff up at short range, but it's not good against barriers and it's not known to be hugely effective out to 600-700 meters. I see the in-game 6.5mm round as Bohemia looking at that situation and going "Makes sense!" and doing it.

    the MXM is too weak?

Slightly confused by your wording. I'm saying that the 6.5 likely is meant to fill the gap between 5.56 NATO (which it replaced in NATO service) and full-power rifle cartridges like 7.62x51 NATO and 7.62x54R. It probably has a 90-130 grain bullet (The range that current 6.5 Grendel and 6.8 Remington SPC rounds fit in.) or about 40 grains heavier than the 5.56. It should pack a wallop. BUT, it shouldn't be anywhere near as stout as the 140-180 Grain 7.62mm NATO bullet. I can't claim credit for the quote, but it fits the discussion. Anyhow, keep shooting the bad man until he stops shooting you. Problem solved!;)

    the MXM is too weak?

The MXM is a DMR, not a sniper rifle. 6.5mm is supposed to be a gap-bridging cartridge, like the real world 6.5 Grendel and 6.8 SPC. Not supposed to equal 7.62 NATO. Keep in mind that More Barrel Length= More velocity is an oversimplification. A load can be specifically tailored around a certain barrel length and not generate any more velocity with a longer barrel. I think 600 Meters is realistic for a Mid-power cartridge. I'd like to see a proper .30 Caliber sniper rifle for BLUFOR though, Going from the 6.5mm straight to the heavy .408 is a little goofy. Likewise, BLUFOR and Indy could both use MMG's. Also, this; "Because if your riflemen can't reach it, your marksman can. If your marksman can't reach it, your sniper can. If your sniper can't reach it, your arty/air can. If they can't reach it then !@#$ that target. He isn't even worried about you."
  13. I generally agree except for- "- no TOH flying model" The simplified flight model is just fine for ARMA. Air assets are in game to support the action on the ground, complicating them further will mainly lead to frustration amongst the player base. The game isn't really supposed to be a robust flight simulator.

    Seattle Map into ARM III

Oh yeah, I'd love to get to play in my hometown... To the point of, while I don't REALLY have any interest in ToH I've considered buying it simply for the Seattle island. Haven't quite got to that point yet though. I think it'd be great if BIS let the modding community have access to it to upgrade and port it either to ARMA II or III, but it'd be a bit much to ask them to make it free. Likewise, it's a bit too much to ask them to put any effort into this on their end, they've got more important stuff to do.
  15. By that logic, so is a Glock. They share a operating system and a designer (Dieudonne Saive finished the gun for FN after Browning's passing.), but beyond that the Hi-Power is a totally different gun. Zero parts commonality. Both have single action triggers but they're of entirely different design. They ARE both fantastic though. Point, carry and shoot well. As far as what the field manual says- It's a single stack frame. I'm hoping it does have the magazine capacity dropped to a reasonable level, 9 or 10 rounds if in 9mm, 7-8 if it's .45ACP

    Arma 3 Gun license?

I get why they would tip-toe around it, I sure wouldn't want to talk about it. I suspect ACE will come around and change all the names back for the non-fictional equipment. It only bugs me a little personally.
  17. Handgun rounds aren't exactly the hammer of god, especially ball rounds that poke little holes and usually fail to dissipate all their kinetic energy into the target... Shot placement is way more important than how hot the bullet is and I don't think ARMA really does wounding in the most realistic way. Nor do I think it necessarily should. (Take a single 9mm round away from your vitals and don't treat it? You'll bleed out but it'd take forever. Take a 12g to your plate carrier and it'd knock you out and break all your ribs, who wants to lay unconcious in game?)
  18. That's a blank firing gun actually. But yeah, M1911's come in just about every major automatic handgun caliber (and rimfire too). 9x19mm, .357SIG, .38 Super, .40S&W, 10mm Norma, .45ACP... And those are common calibers... I tend to believe that the 16 round 9mm mags are a place holder so no one had to write in new magazines yet. I think the "Rook-40" handguns will see a caliber switch to .40 Smith & Wesson eventually. You can't easily convert a .45 to a 9mm. The 9mm/.38 Super slides are a little different internally so it's more than just a barrel. I can tell you that 9mm M1911's shoot really sweet in real life. Very soft recoil, but it is a big heavy pistol with a long barrel.

    Arma 3 Gun license?

Anyone noticed that the Op-For/Indy trucks in the Dev/Beta are named Zamak? I'm sure someone at BIS is chuckling about that one. I think this is all a little odd considering they've always used the real names before. Maybe it's because Arma III is so much higher profile than A2/OA was at launch. (Or Ivan and Martin's detention...)
  20. Athlon II X3 440 "Rana" @ 3.42ghz, Cooled by a Corsair H60 MSI NF980-G65 G.Skill DDR1600, 4GB MSI GTS 250 1GB WD Caviar Black 1tb 7200rpm Win 7 home. And it kinda, sorta, almost works. Game is playable at very low settings at 1600x900, any missions with lots of AI will tank the frame rate. I'd really like to build a new Intel based rig to enjoy the game. Can't seem to get more speed out of the CPU with any kind of stability, I guess 3.4 over stock clock at 3.0 is not bad but I digress.

    ARMA III & Steam WORKSHOP

I don't really get the impetus to use Steam Workshop. Mainly, it's a really easy way to deliver content to people who may not be privy to a games actual community but beyond that what does it offer? I'm like Steam in general, it's DRM but it's not awful as far as DRM goes. But I don't use Workshop on my steam games that do support it. NMM gets used for my Bethesda stuff. Sixupdater and Play with Six has always worked well enough for me in ARMA II.

    Invasion 1944 V3.0

Given the Mediterranean focus of the new game it'd be pretty cool to see some focus on the Italian and Greek theaters which have always been under-represented in sims and games. I'm just glad to see I44 jumping over, I loved it in Arma II and was really pleased with how much care and effort had gone into it.

Silencers - Why do they exist in ArmA 3?

Suppressors are now common-place for first-world special forces & light infantry as well as police tactical teams. Are they truely silent? No. That's not really the point either, it's about signature reduction. The US military is even fielding them on light and medium machine guns now. (On a limited basis.) 30 decibels of sound reduction and a drastically different sound profile is no small thing. Its realistic to have them in game. Do they act entirely correctly? Nope. But SHOULD they be there? Absolutely. I wouldn't mind melee if it were done right, but then you're stuck with QTE's (Press V to break this sentries neck! etc.) which I NEVER want to see in an ARMA game or very mechanical animations which aren't terribly pleasing to the eye. It'd be hard to do in a way that felt natural to the game. I44 has bayonets, that'd be a fun option, but I'd venture to say there are more sound suppressors used in action than bayonets now.
