I seriously doubt NASA has very many computers that would run a video game well. What they're saying is it's a setting. Change it in the options.

Rendering grass at long distances: My thoughts about it

"Lag" is most commonly used to refer to internet latency. What you're describing is an FPS drop. Just FYI. -
Rendering grass at long distances: My thoughts about it

But imagine if the two were used together! Seems perfect to me. -
Could be some of the effects, too. I don't usually get motion sickness, but there have been a few games where some weird combination of factors made me queasy. Usually I can overcome it by messing with video options. Might be worth a shot messing with some of the post-processing effects and such.

I think it was supposed to be a funny analogy, and I totally get it. Yes, your character would be capable of jumping, but why do you need to? Your character's pants have a fly, you could unzip mid-fight, but it wouldn't be all that useful in Arma. I just don't see a situation where we need a real "jump" over an improved "vault".

Everyone gets a trophy syndrome has come to ARMA
Fuse replied to g_rider's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
I understand your point, but I think you're looking at it the wrong way. Let me preface by saying that I've been a PC gamer my entire life, mostly thanks to mods, so please don't think I'm trying to detract from their contribution. Mods are what makes PC gaming what it is. The mods aren't rock n roll, they aren't already in a hall of fame. Lets say mods are punk music. The Ramones are now in the Hall of Fame and acts like them are why most people have heard of CBGB, but that doesn't mean the owner didn't appreciate the underground bands that kept the regulars coming and the genre growing. Advertising an underground band simply won't bring in customers. Instead they advertise the successes, which gets new people to come to the venue, which spawns new success stories. I don't know, maybe that's a terrible analogy, but it makes sense to me. I do agree that the forums are flooded with users clearly looking for a different kind of game. Teamwork is what makes this game so amazing, not playing it like some low-rent MMO gank fest. I hope BIS sticks to their guns and lets these kids make the game they want with mods, but I don't think them trying to build on the DayZ brand is necessarily a betrayal. I don't remember the Day of Defeat mod team complaining that life wasn't fair when Valve started to officially support Counter-Strike. It certainly didn't slow them down at all. -
New to Arma, should I get this or the Arma 2 bundle?
Fuse replied to aiBreeze's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
I own Arma 2 but could never get in to it. The game's issues kept me from ever getting over the initial hurdle, but I love the concept and watching other people play. I've been waiting for Arma 3 to fix these issues and it has. I'm enjoying the alpha a lot and am glad I purchased it, but frankly this is one of the few games I would have pre-ordered anyways (I'd never preorder from a big name publisher, no matter how OPed the bonuses are, but I'll take the discount and gladly support good indie devs both monetarily and by testing the game). The caveat is that the alpha is hard to get in to in its own way. The alpha is far from feature complete; you'll occasionally run in to an issue that you're not sure if it's a bug or your ignorance; there's no training; multiplayer is a bit like the Wild West right now; content in single-player is very limited (SP isn't where Arma shines, but it's obviously where a new player should learn the ropes). I guess TL,DR is that if you're the kind of person who can sit down and spend an hour just looking at the controls for a new game then alpha will be a blast for you. If you need your hand held then there is none of that yet. Alpha has everything you need to have fun in Arma, but you're going to have to teach your self most of it. There are lots of great videos and guides that can help you out, especially when it comes to helping you get some more logical key binds, but that's no substitute for training. -
Rendering grass at long distances: My thoughts about it
Fuse replied to Elcoo's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
I've always wondered why you don't see that more in games. This is an issue that crops up in almost every shooter with decent scale. It seems like it shouldn't be hard to implement or be a big FPS hit. My FPS more than doubles when using optics already, use some of that spare power! Obvious disclaimer: I am not a programmer, I'm just talkin out of my butt. -
Rendering grass at long distances: My thoughts about it
Fuse replied to Elcoo's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
Thank you for this, Elcoo. This seems like a great idea and you did a good job of explaining it for the layman. I really hope we see something like this implemented, at least by one of the big mods if not in official. -
Not seeing why this is needed on a PC. It makes sense for games on consoles due to their controls, but I can turn 360 with my mouse probably as fast as I could double-tap S. I haven't noticed Arma 3 restricting my turn speed when I'm moving (I can sprint up a spiral staircase), but I'll try to pay more attention for it when I play tonight.

/salute Good work. This is the kind of thing that seems minor but will bug the hell out of anyone who notices. (Which now includes me. Thanks a lot! :p) Have you submitted this on the tracker so I can upvote? -
AI kills the performance completely (instructions how to test inside)
Fuse replied to aop's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
Please actually read what is written, rather than skimming it and making assumptions. As I've said multiple times, I never said "AI isn't the problem." I said "Maybe AI isn't the problem, but I could be wrong", and explained why I thought that. What is causing the disparity between running the same map and scenario in two different versions of the engine? Really? Just think about that for a moment. I'm washing my hands of this. I came to contribute my experiences to the discussion, not fight because someone said I might be incorrect. -
Please make "actions" more accesible ! i.e. open doors , climb ladders etc

Good point and well explained. Thank you. I also think this would be a good idea, though some people already think there are too many controls. heh -
AI kills the performance completely (instructions how to test inside)
Fuse replied to aop's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
Roughly 20 AI per side, so over 40 in total, as you would see if you read the post you just quoted. "Airfield" doesn't mean "runway". I spawned them positioned in groups around buildings at opposite ends of the airfield so the two forces would work their way towards each other across the base, rather than just have two ranks open fire on each other (that would be boring and pretty short). Take a chill pill. Someone saying "I'm not sure this is right, but I could be wrong" is not some kind of personal attack. If you don't want other people to share their thoughts and experiences in an attempt to help then don't start a thread. -
AI kills the performance completely (instructions how to test inside)
Fuse replied to aop's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
How about reading my post? You would have seen that I did test my FPS in A3 with and without AI. I'm not going to reinstall A2 for this because that wouldn't actually tell me anything useful. If 40+ units doesn't provide a noticeable FPS hit vs no units, then I'd say AI is not "killing performance". I understand now. Thanks for explaining. -

Of course we have unrestricted internet access, and breaking the law here won't result in being publicly stoned. (Well, breaking that first law might. Puns ftw!) -

Fuse replied to aop's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
Sorry if I've misunderstood something, but you all keep saying it's the AI that is slowing you down, but then many of you say it's the same online. Why would AI running on a server be slowing down your FPS? More likely it's an issue with rendering the units or the effects associated with them. Name one game where the AI has as many possible actions as the Arma series where AI was done better. Arcade shooters where AI only has a handful of ways to move are a lot simpler. Last night I loaded up the editor and plopped about 20 infantry of various types down on the airfield to see if AI was really an issue, spawned my self up on a hill, and just enjoyed the show. My FPS dropped by an average of 4 frames during the fight. I'm not running anything super fancy, just an i5 2500k, GTX 570, and 8GB of RAM. CPU and GPU are OCed. I really don't think AI is the problem you guys are experiencing. I could be wrong. -
Wasted an Hour of My Life on This Game So Far
Fuse replied to MrsAcademy's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
I just have to ask, for my own curiosity; why did you buy in to the alpha test? Did you not know what it was? There's an FAQ... -
I'd like to see vault improved, with the ability to vault small objects without fully breaking stride and possibly even to vault over small gaps (creek bed, alleyways, etc). I don't know how often that second bit will actually come in useful in A3, but the vault system should definitely be buffed up a little. He was kitted out to guard a street corner in Berlin. Now compare his gear to that of a modern infantryman deployed in the field. Do you understand why they might not have as much spring in their step as a well-rested man with very little gear who sees only a low coil of barbed wire keeping him in under a fascist govt?

Are we playing the same game? Arma 3 definitely has this button. I believe it was Spacebar by default. It does exactly what you two are asking. -
Suggestions for Streamlining, Fixing Stance Adjustment & Movement Speed Controls
Fuse replied to HighXplosive's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
Honestly, after spending an hour or so setting everything up my controls function almost exactly as you describe, with one or two differences. You really can do a lot by rebinding your keys. Remember that a modifier key, like shift, can be used for different bindings so long as they aren't applicable at the same time. Try consolidating controls that won't conflict. If you customize your controls properly you really can stream-line it significantly. -
Separate options for DOF, Blur and Glare, Ambient Occlusion ?
Fuse replied to grandstack's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
We definitely need these effects to be independently adjustable. I love Ambient occlusion but hate the ones that reduce image clarity (like DoF, Motion Blur, etc). One of my biggest peeves with games these days is that so many force me to disable AO by lumping it in with the ugly, screen-blurring fluff.
