RKSL 3 - A new start... Discussion

Why does it make sense to give someone permission to monetize our mods or content when we're forbidden from doing the same thing ourselves? So we make something that we're not supposed to monetize, but then it's ok to donate it to someone and let them monetize it? The only way to not be foolish and hypocritical is to mandate that anyone charging for access to their server can only use content that is completely free and available to the entire community. Otherwise, any single scrap of content that is being offered on a pay to play server is monetized content.

So many holes in this... After further thinking... let's say I make the coolest game mode/addon and I make it exclusive to my server, and charge a fee for people to access my server. What's the difference between that scenario, and just cutting out the middleman and charging a fee to download my mode/addon?

http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?188238-Arma-3-Server-monetization I hope you press your claim on any server that tries to monetize their server based on your mod.

As someone who maintains a mod, and am continuing development, this change has me questioning if I want to continue. So now I have to keep track of which commercial interests have permission to use my mod? In the past it's been easy; no permission for A3L because of their moneymaking schemes, and all others have permission as long as altered versions don't show up in video or screenshots. Now I have to research which servers I feel might be skirting the line and then make a decision? Can I turn around and revoke my permission? And I think it's absolute horseshit that mod makers can't ask for a portion of the proceeds that servers generate. A server uses your mods as a way to make their servers more attractive, and therefore more profitable, and you're not allowed to profit from your work increasing their value? Ridiculous! Your work is making them more valuable and you're not allowed to share in that at all. I don't want to make a profit from my work, but at the same time I don't want to sit by while someone else profits from my time and effort. The fact that you're singling out that content can't be monetized is just a matter of twisting words. If a server uses my mod and people are paying for access, the server owners absolutely are making a profit from my work. Why should I spend time and effort for someone else to get paid? I'll have to think it over, but I'm leaning towards ceasing public development of any content.

BadHabitz replied to salty6924's topic in ARMA 3 - MISSION EDITING & SCRIPTING
Interesting. I remember way back I had a init command that made the AI sit (around a campfire). Everything worked fine in singleplayer. When I tried multiplayer all of the AI were missing. Judging by your problem description it means my AI didn't disappear, but were warped away. I think I still have the mission, and now I want to test it out, lol. -

Arma 3 crashing while using mods

Forget mods, it's just easier to blame Arma 3 for all of the problems. -

You're trying to put RH scopes on EricJ's weapons. I think you need to make sure you have ASDG Joint Rails for both products. -

Awesome. You beat me to it. One day I was going to sit down and learn, and DG was going to be my first project. Of course I keep putting off 'one day', but I'm glad someone is doing it. -
I believe that comes from any mod that has rocket backblast. Since the round is explosive, the mod treats it like a rocket going off and it hits you with backblast damage.

I don't see a problem with people putting up links for donations. I also have no problems with people asking for donations to cover server costs, or other costs that the project needs. I just personally don't see it as acceptable to ask for donations as the only way for mods to be made, or for them to be made faster. There's only so much free time after work, sleep and family, and whether or not donations come in doesn't change that. Some people say that the community is shrinking, and that good modders are decreasing over time, but I counter that with the fact that new players are joining the community, and they're getting interested in modding. So it's not like 100% of the community/modders were created with OFP and no one joins the fight along the way. I actually think it's a positive that Arma modding isn't much easier, because if it was more open for the larger community, you'd see the community flooded with junk. It would be much harder to find quality mods floating in a sea of half-assed models and redundant reskins. I really enjoy Arma 3 as a game, and as an excuse to channel some of my creativity. In the beginning I started off by loading people's scripts into missions, and have transitioned into understanding configs, and my journey keeps going. Words cannot properly express my gratitude to the veteran modders and scripters along the way that have spent the time to look over my work, and who have contributed to my projects. People have said that maybe some good things can get underway now that MANW is over, and I hope I can be a part of that. Cheers!

That's fine. It's just my opinion. I wouldn't let my want for a mod override my concern for another person's stability. Even if they were in it for the money, I would certainly hope they did not suffer in their personal life and fortune in order to make mods in a video game, because in the end I don't think you can make anything close a living off of donations from the community of a niche game.

:dancehead: It will be awesome when this is done -
Right, if people plan to make a mod then they should do so because they enjoy the process and the result. Sucks that we lose out on some cool future project, but making money shouldn't be high on the list of priorities for mod makers. Not to say there's no place for it, but if money is more important than enjoying the game, then it's best that you do move on. That sounds like a situation where a guy should step back from Arma stuff and get his life in order first. I don't want anyone sacrificing any element of their personal life to deliver game mods to the community.

And all of the complaining in this forum is not going to change that.

Petition: Add a 'Rant'' sub-forum, or make use of existing

There are already appropriate feedback threads for issues. Rants are generally unproductive, annoying, and are of no use. -
