    RAM Management - Serious Question

STOP. Want to discuss hardware performance, ram, cpu, ssd or whatever, there are plenty of threads open for the purpose, leave this thread out of it. Want to discuss Fred's malloc, there are threads dedicated to the subject, even one in this forum section, leave this thread out of it. This thread is about of a specific subject, about which I am 100% sure that is having a negative impact in game performance, in the hope that the developers can look at it Unless you have a similar hardware configuration so we can really compare whats happening, I'll ask you people to stop making guesses. I am waiting for a 8 GB VRAM single GPU so I can be sure that this is not related with crossfire, then I'll ask moderators to close this thread. Still I am also asking for a bit more time because I am having some troubles to get the GPU since Pascal is coming out in a couple of weeks and is not wise decision to buy any AMD hardware atm, but I am confident that I will get one just for testing purposes. Thank you for understanding.

    RAM Management - Serious Question

Those benchmarks are mainly for FPS contest, still, not being FPS my purpose with this thread I have no problems in doing it, because also serves to prove my point. Pagefile disabled, VRAM load max 800 MB, RAM load max 4800 MB Stratis average 54 FPS, Altis average 44 FPS. Now if we look closer we see that in Stratis we have basically the GPU running at 99% and in Altis running at 50%. Does this make sense? Not at all, what would made sense was if we had the GPU running at 50% in Stratis and at 99% in Altis. Why this happens? The answer is simple. In Stratis we have a RAM load bellow 3.8 GB, which is perfectly normal and in this situation the game engine is able to manage it under acceptable timings, means that the GPU (and also CPU) are not being bottlenecked. In Altis we have a RAM load of about 4.8 GB (which is pretty decent when compared with the 12 GB that I had when I was having a VRAM of 9 GB), still is enough to cause a huge GPU bottleneck (and also CPU) just because the game engine is unable to manage this amount of RAM under acceptable timings. This will make me to say again, the real issue with this game is the memory management, the CPU and GPU bottleneck that common people usually complains about, is in reality a issue cause by memory management that cause bottlenecks in to every piece of hardware in our machine. Stratis and Altis in a row. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qm1kp4oSSSM (btw, I am still using Lagarith codec, which eats 7/10 FPS)

    RAM Management - Serious Question

If I was going to guess (based on my experiences with several hardware brands/models) the reason for these issues related with memory management, I would say that we have 3 facts for the cause. 1 Fact, Due to "32 bits breaking barrier" basically there are no limits for RAM load, usage and consequently management. Keep in mind that when this feature was implemented the average VRAM was around 1 GB (for the GPUs at that time). 2 Fact, In this game (more than with any other) the graphics quality (mainly textures) have a significant impact in RAM load and usage. Also graphics quality (mainly textures) have a significant impact in VRAM load and usage, and these two are linked. That's why with a GPU having a 1 GB of VRAM we don't have "Ultra" available for textures in game settings. 3 Fact, More VRAM = More RAM load. Above certain limits in matters of VRAM, the RAM load is to high and the game engine cant handle with it within acceptable timings causing degradation in performance that also negatively affects GPU and CPU performance. In short, "32 bit breaking barrier" works flawless below certain limits in matters of VRAM but it causes severe performance degradation above certain limits. Like I have said, just a guess.

    RAM Management - Serious Question

Yes, I have 32 GB of RAM, Yes, I have pagefile disabled. Startup parameters? No I dont have any related with hardware. Besides the only one that is working is maxmem which is only related with arma3.exe process memory usage but the only changes with it are when you set it bellow 2047 MB, but is like useless because if you set it, let's say, to 1500 MB the game starts struggling, if you set it, let's say, to 1000 MB the game becomes unplayable, but again maxmem parameter is ONLY related with arma3.exe, which is not the subject here and also I dont have issues with it, arma3.exe, memory usage with it rarely exceed 2000 MB, in my end. I have no doubts (based in my experience with both) that the game performs better with Nvidia, still is not the case here, the RAM usage and management are not related with AMD or Nvidia. Now keep in mind that the subject here are not the FPS, is the RAM usage and management. Still, having above 50 FPS is Kavala with a 10 year old GPU with 1 GB of VRAM is something amazing. But the most amazing is that do not give any issue with RAM and everything looks much more smooth. RAM load remains around 4 GB and the flush/refressh timings are being performed quite well, all this having less than 800 MB of VRAM in use. Also, I am recording this video with Lagarith Losseless Codec, which eats aroud 7/10 FPS, when not recording I have stable 60 FPS (I have it limited to 60, there is no need for more), whatever the scenario. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLsr1w1fx1w Are you kidding? I have found the perfect hardware for A3.

    Audio Tweaking (dev branch)

Not really, I just like to see the evolution of the sound. Btw, here the sound with 1.54 (main main branch) before the addiction of the new SFX (sound shaders and sets). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXq3WwuryGE Also, the sound 2 years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtCOXBkSiJ4 If this is not allowed in this thread, I apologise and delete please.

    RAM Management - Serious Question

Well, I dont really have errors or crashes, mine only issue is the huge amount of ram loaded because after some point the game starts struggling. So far I am sure of one thing, more gpu vram means more ram loaded and having 6 and/or 9 GB of Vram, the amount of ram loaded is just insane. I have played for long time with a GTX 580 1.5 GB vram and never had issues with ram, also with a single R 280 3 GB vram, even the ram load being higher, there are no issues related with. Still not sure if this issue happens due to crossfire (multi gpu) or if also happens with a single gpu. I am waiting for a R 390 with 8 GB vram, then I will be sure if is related with vram or if is related with crossfire (multi gpu).

    Audio Tweaking (dev branch)

Not the same video. I am trying to figure the sound changes through development process, using the same environment. If you look closer, you will see that the development builds are not the same. Here is the previous one, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IIG7-V0BaA Not really a mission, just 30 AI vehicles placed in editor with some waypoints, they are fighting just beause its oposite forces, using cam loop.

    RAM Management - Serious Question

Oh well, trying to figure whats happening, I just went into my basement, cleaned the dust of my 10 year old 5870 1GB Vram and connected in to mine top notch machine.. and the result... just superb. Like, 500 Mb of Vram usage, stable 60 FPS and average RAM Load. Conclusion, want to run the game without major flaws? Get a 10 years old graphics card with 1Gb Vram. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dEgB_xepg4

    DirecxtX 12 for ArmA 3?

Yes, a fancy name that AMD gave to multithreaded commands in order to be able to make use of all GPU processor units simultaneously and multithreaded, which only worked with Mantle and now with DX12. Exactly because, with DX 11, AMD never could make it to work with their Stream processors, while Nvidia made it flawless with their Cuda cores (multithreaded and simultaneously). It's all about drivers. Why AMD was not able to understand DX11 properly? Just because at end is only a matter of financial business where Microsoft and Nvidia are involved fighting also for the huge market provided by Gaming Consoles That's why Mantle and now Vulkan, since AMD is like the "outsider" in that jungle. Still, there are no doubts that DX12 has some advantages over DX11, in my opinion will see the power unleashed with next/upcoming Nvidia generations, since in matters of current hardware is being dealt in a way very similar to DX11, whether AMD or Nvidia (if we exclude drivers) and the performance improvements are not really noticeable.

What is your best/worst experience in Arma 3?

My best experience was in Alpha, dam I miss those days.
  13. In my honest opinion and because I've already come across with many game server providers, with several games, the best thing is to rent/host a dedicated box with a decent hardware configuration. When you go for a server (like gameservers or any other) provide, you are sharing the hardware with some other clients and games and in most cases the hardware is not able to provide a decent performance just because is shared and also because they rent more than the machine can provide, some server providers even rent shared virtual servers. Still, gameservers have decent dedicated servers, with machines having an acceptable configurations. https://www.gameservers.com/dedicated/ If you are planning to host the server for long time the best thing is to build yourself the hardware and then rent a rack with some company that is providing those services. I dont know your location, but from my experience and myself being in UE, I've had for some time a dedicated ARMA (2/3) server hosted by http://www.gamingdeluxe.co.uk/and I have no complaints, excellent support and decent price. Even when ARMA 3 was in Alpha, I had a Dev server hosted by them, always working flawless. Oops, now I see you are located in Dallas, I believe gamingdeluxe have their services also in Dallas, still not sure.

    DirecxtX 12 for ArmA 3?

You people need to wait for new hardware to see improvements, maybe then we can see it, just maybe. What we see now about AMD improvements related with DX12 are because of this, purely drivers related. And thats why Nvidia does not provide any improvement with DX12, atm.

    FMOD in ARMA 3

Then stop arguing and stop making nonsense claims in a attempt to justify what it has no justification. I can understand and accept if some one says that FMOD (or similar) is not feasible in ARMA 3 for whatever reason, I cannot accept absurd arguments trying to put XAudio2 at same of level of those audio engines. What we have now with "new audio engine" are some effects similar to those who were added with some mods. That makes the sound better? Not even close. Even more when most of the users with their sound software could simulate the effects of those mods and now of the "new audio engine". Still the sound quality "under several aspects" remains low. Probably the person who have opened this thread about FMOD know the benefits that could come from there, also we do need to be an "audio geek" to know that. It is just a matter of knowhow based on several experiences under these audio engines. You may think that you are helping the game, but you are not. If was not the Life thing this game would be dead, do you think that those people who play Life on 200 men servers with 15 FPS cares about sound? Do you really think that are these people that are going to buy the expansion when 99% of Life servers use custom content such islands, vehicles, etc? I can tell you, those that I know and play this game as military sim are not going to get it and you know why? Well. the sound is one of the reasons. Anyway, the time will tell who is right or wrong.

    FMOD in ARMA 3

So, this is the reason why you are claiming that ROF is tied to FPS. Well, at minimum, is hilarious. What you have in your video is the delay (lag) caused by your GPU because is not rendering the frames under acceptables timings (required by the engine) and that applies to everything in game (every action or movement), just because is delay (lag). That has nothing to ROF being tied to FPS, when ROF is tied to FPS (as it is being claimed here) we have higher ROF when have higher FPS. Show me a evidence where I can see that we have higher ROF having higher FPS, like 60 FPS vs 120 FPS, for instance. Also I suggest you to find (in game engine) from where we start to have delay (lag), meaning bellow which FPS or above which Ms the engine starts to render with delay. But the most hilarious is, these people are the ones who are setting the standards for sound quality in game. Dear God.

    FMOD in ARMA 3

Having 120 fps we have higher ROF? Having 60 fps we have lower ROF? Show me a evidence of what you are saying.
  18. In my end using CrossfireX there is one thing that kills fps and basically makes the game unplayable. Shadows. With CrossfireX enabled no matter the quality settings (low or ultra, doesn't matter) that we set for it, shadows just kill the game. With CrossfireX disabled (single gpu) I have no issues with shadows. CrossfireX enabled with shadows enabled using several quality settings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8q0SEBoB14 Nasty performance impact with all. CrossfireX enabled with shadows enabled and disabled (all graphics settings in Ultra/Maxed) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLn4htOnWGU No performance impact with shadows disabled and nasty performance impact with shadows in Low. CrossfireX disabled (single gpu) with shadows enabled. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfPPlLwtIRw No performance impact. Dont know if the same happens to you, but this is what I get.
  19. That applies only to executable (arma3.exe). The executable never load more than 2 GB, you are correct. However this is not related with it. This is a specific subject related with AMD CrossfireX and RAM load while using it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bg2Y8T4-F1Q
  20. Yes, AMD CrossfireX with 2 or 3 GPUs the Video Memory Address mapped into System Memory (physical or/and virtual), has a considerable large size. I know because I have Triple CrossfireX and basically the same happens with me, still I dont have "out memory" error because I have 32 GB of RAM. According to mine experience with CrossfireX, running the game in Ultra, 16 GB of RAM are not enough. What you can try (and probably will solve your issue) is, instead of having Pagefile managed by the Windows, manually set it or define it to a fixed size, let's say to 16GB. 16 GB of virtual memory plus 16 GB of physical memory (32 in total) should be enough to run the game in Ultra with CrossfireX.

    Sound update ruined this game...

Mate, I dont know what to say. seriously. Dam it, after some hard digging I have found my BF3 account, Look how much I love it (as PC platform) http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/soldier/HellFragger/stats/730417216/pc/(what?? 38 hours played with BF3? No wonder why I forgot mine Origin account credentials) Btw, I was a big fan of BF2 and BFBC2 (PC)\ More digging, there is me with BFBC2 (PC) http://bfbcs.com/stats_pc/Cpt_Hoeflich This makes me a Frostbite expert or what? Some more digging, mine AA2 account. https://battletracker.com/playerstats/aao/634601/%5BBAHAMUT%5D.Mohican/ This makes me a UE2 expert or what? More digging, 1000 hours with AA3? That makes me a UE3 expert or what? And what? 1500 hours with CSGO? That makes me a Source expert or what? Not to mention the freakin COD4, but at that time we could play it with Steam disabled so .. hours played did not count.

Yes mate, I like the way you think, Some uber awesome mods with some uber sound effects, like mega explosions, awesome reverbs and shit related is all what we need, Bratwurste and the follwoing people are just some insane guys, FMOD has been integrated as a primary sound-effects system into the following game engines, what a fools, Unity from Unity Technologies Unreal Engine 3 from Epic Games Unreal Engine 4 from Epic Games CryEngine from Crytek Source from Valve Software All this people are just a bunch of crazy ones, why they just dont use the amazing XAudio2? Fools thats what they are. Anyway mate, following your (and your mates) line of thought just made me to save some bucks.
