Because every fiber of their being was being directed toward making the kart DLC. I mean really, they are raising money for charity AND giving us more content. You're just looking for a reason to complain.

Could never see ArmA becoming an E-sport, it is not competitive enough and is too dynamic. Most E-sports games tend to be built completely around small-team, competitive multiplayer, while ArmA is built around huge-scale sandbox gameplay.

This is a guide for new players on what to do when you first install ArmA 3, or any ArmA game for that matter (Since ArmA has no official matchmaking or the like). I originally posted this as a response to a question on steam from a new player asking what he should do now that he had downloaded the game, hope this helps! Learning the Ropes I would recommend playing the single player showcases first, they can teach you how to do everything in the game (Just the basics though, if you want to get good your going to have to play MP, and lots of it). You can find them under the singleplayer portion of the game. But be aware, ArmA is not an easy game to "get the hang of". If you are unused to the tactical shooter/milsim genre, you will probably die and be frustrated in the beginning. A lot. If you feel you really need help, I would recommend watching some videos of people playing ArmA, so you can get a feel for how to play tactically and smartly. After you get the hang of things, if you feel you aren't ready for MP yet, you can continue to play singleplayer through the campaign, which is pretty decent, and gives you tons more combat and variety than the showcases. Lastly, a good tool to mess around with things with, look around the maps, or just run some scenarios is the editor, which allows you to set up pretty much anything you want on any of the maps. Its easy to use, I would recommend watching some of Jester814's tutorial videos on the editor if you get stuck. Singleplayer Besides the campaign and showcases, your only other option for SP is custom missions made by community members. You can download these either off of ArmAholic, the official BI forums, or steam workshop. Multiplayer Multiplayer is a whole different story from singleplayer. You may be a bit overwhelmed at the start, since there are so many different gamemodes (We call them "missions" in ArmA 3). Almost all missions are made by the community, so you will find a wide variety in the server browser, each completely different. The ArmA server browser is pretty standard, filter for mission to find the specific mission you want to find, and filter for server name to find specific servers. If you want to host private games with your friends, you can download some missions off of ArmAholic, the BI official forums, or the steam workshop. Some multiplayer missions to avoid at the start: Altis/Stratis life: I wouldn't reccomend joining a life server for your first experience of ArmA, it isn't representative of any of the actual gameplay at all, despite its rampant popularity. Its just a roleplaying mission with a cops vs robbers vibe where most of your time is spent making money through various mostly-non-combat means and then you run around messing with people and roleplaying. Maybe try this later down the line. Modded missions: Many servers run with mods, since ArmA has a VERY active modding community. Playing with mods will just confuse you at the start, so I would not reccomend playing with any in the beggining Some Multiplayer Missions to try Invade and Annex (AKA Domination): This is the unofficial premier gamemode of ArmA, it's sometimes known as Domination (Esepcially in ArmA 2). Basically, you are cooperating with a team of players to clear out areas of the map, in succession, of enemy AI. Although this gamemode can seem a bit hectic, if you ask people for help they can get you on the right track (Try to look or ask for the people that are working together) Patrol ops: Like Invade and Annex, but with more varied objectives. People on this mission usually work together a bit more. CTI (AKA Warfare): This gamemode is one of my personal favorities in ArmA, you can usually find it under the name of CTI, Warfare, or something similar. It essentially turns ArmA into a hybrid FPS/RTS, where there are two teams of players and AI controlled by player commanders who build bases and give orders, and all of the players can buy troops and vehicles using resources from capture towns. Very fun, and people tend to work together. Wasteland: Although not the most teamwork-oriented gamemode, wasteland is like DayZ (I assume you know about DayZ) with no zombies, a million times more guns, vehicles, and base building, and two teams in addition to the regular independent players. Pretty good for having fun with a group of friends, or joining a team and trying to set up a base (But don't expect random people to work together too much on here) ZGM (Aka Zeus): Zeus is the new official feature/gamemode for ArmA 3, its essentially a real-time-editor, AKA a gamemaster. One or more players are the game master, and they create on-the-fly missions for the other players to enjoy. This can be very fun, since there are an infinite number of missions that can be played in this gamemode. I have some videos of this on my youtube channel, if you want to see what that is all about. Now that you are comfortable... Now that you are comfortable with ArmA, both SP and MP, you may be wanting to enhance your experience even further. I would recommend, if you haven't already, to download and try out some mods. ArmA has one of the best and diverse modding communities out there, and there is something new coming out every day. Your hub for installing mods will be ArmAholic which will teach you how to install mods and give you daily updates on new missions/mods that are released and WiP. You can also check out the good ol' BI official forums which too have tons of mods. Now then, how about community? You may be a bit dissatisfied with the lack of cooperation or teamwork on many public servers, but fear not, there is a solution. The ArmA series have many active community groups and clans, most of which would be happy to accept new members. Groups in ArmA are very diversified, with some people running hardcore-milsim coop and others just playing casual PvP, so i'm sure there will be one that can fit you. I would definitely recommend looking for a group to play with if you are happy with ArmA but want more enhanced teamwork. The best place to look for a group to join is to either stumble upon one of their servers, or check out the Squads and Fanpages section of the BI Forums. Important links for ArmA stuff: Official ArmA 3 forums: http://forums.bistudio.com/forumdisplay.php?112-ARMA-3 This is where most of the ArmA community hangs out (Typically its the more casual players that use the steam forums... although people like me sometimes lurk around here). You can ask anyhting you want on these forums, the people there are generally friendly and very welcoming to new players, just mention that you are new and you need help (And make sure to post in the right section of the forums!) You're on them. Herp Derp. ArmAholic: http://www.armaholic.com/ If ArmA was a drug, this is the place you would go for your daily fix. ArmAholic is a community-run site that hosts everything related to ArmA, from missions, mods, updates, everything. Be warned though, you may eventually find yourself checking ArmAholic every few hours, googling ArmA videos on youtube in your spare time while you download the latests addons and post discussions on the ArmA forums on your second monitor. It is at that moment that you will realize you too have become, an ArmAholic. ArmA 3 official site: http://www.arma3.com/ The ArmA 3 site is actually pretty important, even though ArmAholic may notify you about updates to the game, they will be first posted here, in full detail. The BI devs are very open about their game development, and the game is constantly being patched and getting new content, almost always for free. All of which will be posted here. Have anymore questions? Post them in the comments of this post!

Hey, I have a request for the next build of Defiance I have been playing as the independents a lot recently, specifically the commander. I have noticed that every time I play, most of our HQ's are taken out by BLUFOR members we don't even realize were there. By the time we do realize they are in the town, it is too late because our spawning area has already been disabled. This makes it extremely easy for BLUFOR to win by just sneaking into every undefended town and taking out the HQ before we realize they are there. Although this can be countered by defending your towns in advance, that is hardly ever feasible. Most servers I have played on for Defiance have unit limits of 60, so if you try to defend multiple towns your forces are spread so thin that BLUFOR can simply walk in right under their noses, disable the spawn, and destroy/find the HQ before the braindead AI can discover where they are in the town. This is especially a problem on big maps like Altis, where it usually takes 5-10 minutes to transport troops from town to town. So how can this be fixed while remaining realistic and balanced? I think you should do two things. First, I would recommend giving an early warning system when BLUFOR has been spotted at least 1.5km from the HQ (Maybe something like 1km on Stratis). This is also realistically feasible, since civilian contacts/undercover guerrillas would have likely noticed any conventional forces rolling into their town. Once they have entered said spotting radius, a "area" marker should appear on the map, showing you the area where they were last spotted (Updates like every 2-3 minutes), to simulate again civilian contacts and undercover guerrillas calling out their positions. This would enable INDFOR to respond to BLUFOR in their town without having any OP knowledge of their exact positions. Second, I would change the way INDFOR spawns. Instead of having the spawn area encompass the entire town where the HQ is located, I advise putting a separate area in the town for the INDFOR to spawn and spawn in AI/Vehicles, lets call it a "Barracks". The Barracks would be a small area, a circle maybe 50 meters in diameter, completely separate from the HQ location, but in the same town. Instead of being deactivated when BLUFOR got into the town, spawning would be disabled once they got within 100 meters of the Barracks, and they would be able to search buildings and investigate civilians for its location (Much like the HQ). This way there can be actual prolonged fights inside of towns without INDFOR spam spawning on top of the HQ. An alternative to the above mentioned solution, if it proves too problematic or complex, could just be to give BLUFOR one town to search at a time (So at the start of the match they would be informed that the INDFOR HQ is in only one town, then when they take that one out they get a new one), and INDFOR should be notified as to which HQ BLUFOR has intel on, so that they can prepare a defence. Of course I don't make missions myself, so I don't know how hard this would be to implement, but I would definitely like to see a system like this implemented, at least on the bigger maps where it is far too easy for BLUFOR to destroy an entire HQ without firing a shot.

I like realism in terms of realistic gameplay (realisitc ballistic model, body armor, vehicles physics, ect) and mission design (feasible loadouts, enemy opposition, enemy responses, ect) What I don't want i realism in terms of "THAT'S SERGEANT TO YOU, PRIVATE"

Project ASTFOR - Astelandic Armed Forces
Westonsammy replied to PTV-Jobo's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
I have been waiting on news about ASTFOR for a long, long time (Especially after Jarhead posted those wip pictures awhile back...) and I have to say this sounds AMAZING. Its like an unofficial official DLC for ArmA 3- 657 replies

I think the OP was under the misconception that the Hunter/Ifrit were meant to be more like Humvees and UAZ's than MRAPs For those that don't know, MRAPs are specifically meant to absorb small arms fire, unlike humvees and other such vehicles, which are mainly just for transport or mounting weapons like ATGM's on. Although ArmA does take it a wee bit too far, like with the 18 ABR shots to take out the window, it is pretty accurate as to how it would be able to protect troops. Now if only we could get that sort of damage model on the Tempest...

Things that would be good to add to ArmA 3
Westonsammy replied to nuttypie's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Oh... its one of these posts... But anyway, I think BI should prioritize improving existing content and adding new features rather than just adding more vehicles, guns, ect (As it has been said, we have mods for that) Weapon Resting, improved sounds and a 3D editor should, in my opinion, be at the top of that list -
I agree, this issue is a bit weird, I've found that the best fix for when you spawn in a vehicle is to try to get out first (May take a few tries), because once you can successfully get out you shouldn't have any more problems with switching seats.

Erm... I have no idea what the official BI servers for Zeus look like, but you can easily join any non-official Zeus server, and they are usually running the "ZGM" mission, which is where Zeus has the power to do pretty much anything in a coop environment. The possibilities for missions are literally infinite in this gamemode, so in all actuality the PvP missions are where Zeus is more restricted!
-
I was having the same issue, it is possible, just very hard. Although it's impossible to place AI waypoints on the upper floors of structures from the start, once they are down you can use the usual click+alt to adjust their height. The problem is on at least the watchtower (Haven't tried other structures) instead of going to the waypoint itself, they simply walk underneath it which then completes the waypoint 90% of the time. Occasionally, if you manage to hit the right spot, they will walk up into the tower, but its very hard to do so. I would suggest that instead of placing a specific waypoint for buildings, you can somehow set a position for the AI to occupy (Like you can do with the editor, if you don't know what i'm talking about)

RHS: Armed Forces of the Russian Federation A3 WIP Thread
Westonsammy replied to soul_assassin's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
I would prefer Iranians over Russians any day (if done correctly without bug helmets ect.), Russians are too overused in gaming... ...unless of course they are being made by the RHS team :D -
So I decided to bring this up today, mainly because I see so many people whining about how "BI ignores the feedback tracker" and then point out how most of the top "issues" haven't been "fixed" for a long time. I noticed this a long while back (Like the Alpha days), if you go on the feedback tracker, almost all of the most upvoted "issues" are simply feature requests. From what I have gathered, the feedback tracker is meant to get the communities opinion on what is wrong or broken with the game. Which is why I don't understand why BI allows posts like "Some sort of melee", "[Feature Request] Fast Roping" and "Realistic Wounding System" to exist here. Now i'm not saying that these feature requests aren't important and shouldn't be taken into consideration (I want bipods/weaponresting as much as anyone else), but I think they should be moved somewhere else. I think the feedback tracker should be for finding issues with the game and fixing them, not a place for people to say what they want to see in the game. I would at least like to see the feature requests moved to their own separate section of the tracker, that way people don't have to sift through them to find the issues that need fixing. Hopefully this will help BI get to those small issues that can be easily fixed that have been up for a long time.
-
If BI even just said "Hey guys, we are going to try and make weapon resting, but no guarantees" I would be overjoyed. I would be less so overjoyed, but at least content if they simply said "Nope. Not going to happen+reason" At this point I don't care if they do it, just that they tell us they are either trying to or not

Feedback tracker filled with feature requests?

I think you may want to edit the title and change "idiots" to "trolls", it seems pretty aggressive atm... Now then, to get to your point, I think everyone on here can agree, there are craploads of trolls in ArmA these days. I personally believe it all stems back to the players that DayZ mod brought along when it made ArmA much more "mainstream". Before DayZ came along, trolls were around, but VERY hard to come by. Now then, the majority of the DayZ community is pretty chill and either conforms to milsim or doesn't bother, but there is a large portion of players that just bought DayZ to mess with people, then noticed "Oh hey, look, the vanilla game, of which we care nothing for, is full of super-hardcore milsimmers who hate it when people fuck up their shit." Before DayZ, they weren't willing to spend the money to buy ArmA just to troll. DayZ gave them a reason to buy ArmA, which is why a lot of milsimmers dislike the mod. As to how to avoid these trolls, I have three tips for you. 1: Try to find servers with anti-trolling measures. These would be things like friendly-fire off, scripts that prevent grenade throwing in base, only allowing pilots on teamspeak to fly, ect. Some servers enforce these rules very well, and they tend to be the most populated. 2: Play on dev branch. This is really good for if you just want to set up a mission with some friends and maybe a few random people, most of the trolls don't even know dev branch exists, and aren't willing to leave the realm of high-population servers to troll like 6 dudes on dev branch. Also you can try out whatever new stuff BI has cooked up, right now i'm having a blast playing the Zeus DLC with a bunch of random dudes on public servers, haven't been trolled once since it came out on dev branch. 3: Join a community. There are lots of big ArmA communities out there, and there is one for just about everyone (strict rules, lenient rules, large, small, infantry based, combined arms based, ect) and i'm sure you can find one that suits you. Many of these communities recruit selectively and host private servers, so there is ZERO chance of running into trolls, and plus you get to meet a lot of new people who like to play ArmA!

Will we ever see a stable multiplayer running at 50-60 fps?
Westonsammy replied to Holden93's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
The fanboys aren't the ones defending the game, the fanboys are the ones complaining most... Anyway, to keep on track with the post, it may be possible, especially on smaller maps with well optimized missions, but for the foreseeable future? I don't think so. I'm going to guesstimate, based on the improvements since Alpha and how ArmA 2's progress has been, maybe in a year or two we can see a mission with large amounts of players on Altis running at 50-60 fps on the most modern rigs. -
The Spetznaz and downed Russian pilot from EW were pretty memorable... but that doesn't really count as a campaign, does it? ---------- Post added at 17:58 ---------- Previous post was at 17:45 ---------- They could easily continue the plot somewhere else I would much rather have BI continue the plot in a very different location, and PLEASE make more open ended missions like Game Over, the start of that first mission in "Adapt", and some of the showcases. So tired of the "Go here, shoot dudes. Go here, shoot dudes and call in airstrike. Go here and defend by shooting dudes"

Large S.T.A.L.K.E.R. inspired Island "NOVA ZONA"
Westonsammy replied to meshcarver's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Yes but ArmA is not a cops and robbers game, its a military sandbox. Most militarys only use underground structures for storage, secure testing sites, command centers, ect. None of this is really needed in ArmA, as combat never happens at such places (Despite what every casual shooter would have you believe). -
If we could ever get that many players onto Altis with no lag...

CSAT Modification Project
Westonsammy replied to theevancat's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
In your screenshots, the Iranian flags look a bit too bright on the uniforms. I know that for formal military uniforms the countries flag is usually displayed brightly with the full colors, but in combat uniforms it is usually much more dull so that it doesn't give away positions. I would recommend making an officer uniform with the current flag, and then dulling the colors on the combat ones.
